Gel Eyeliners – Show & Tell

I wanted to do a quick show and tell of my gel eyeliners, since I thought people might be interested. I don’t have that many, but the colors I have I really like. I definitely prefer shimmer in my liners. I picked up 3 of my Coastal Scents Colors (Sexy Pink, Turquoise and Grape Vine) while they were having a buy 2 get 1 free sale. Speaking of Coastal Scents, they have excellent customer service. I contacted them to see if I could switch one of my eyeliner colors (to get Turquoise instead of Deep Purple because of another review I saw on Deep Purple), and they switched it for me. This is a rare thing with customer service.

My Liners with Flash

Color Descriptions:
Coastal Scents Platinum – platinum silver shimmer
Coastal Scents Sexy Pink – fuschia pink shimmer
Coastal Scents Grape Vine – purple shimmer
Coastal Scents Turquoise – mint green shimmer
Coastal Scents 24k – golden shimmer
Aromaleigh Black Cherry – shimmering deep blackened burgundy
Aromaleigh Black Out – basic black
MAC Waveline – navy blue with low level gold pearl

As you all know, I love multi-purpose products. These eyeliners can double as creme eye shadow bases, which is great. They all stay around on my skin all day. Today I wore Platinum and Black Out, and I put my makeup on at 8:30 am this morning and it’s now midnight my time, and it hasn’t budged at all. Incidentally, I also used MAC Paint Pot in Bare Study as my base, and Aromaleigh Rocks! Sonic eye shadows. My MAC Pro Lash mascara didn’t budge, nor did my Urban Decay 24/7 liner.

I love metallics and Platinum and 24k are the most awesome metallic gel eyeliners I’ve seen.
Platinum can surprisingly pair up with just about anything for me so far.
I actually love to pair 24k with Urban Decay’s Half Baked eye shadow. You can see that here.
Black Cherry looks good in place of most browns, as well as if you’re wearing red or pinks or burgundys.
Black Out, as you all know, goes with everything.
Waveline is good for when you want a dark blue. I like it with golds, yellows, greys and browns. I think you can also use it on the lower water line to make your eyes appear whiter.
I haven’t tried Sexy Pink yet, but I think I’ll be wearing it tomorrow with Urban Decay’s Sellout.
Grape Vine is perfect for any time I want a nice purple liner. It will allow me to tight line a bit better than Urban Decay’s Lust, though they’re both great colors.
Turquoise is way more of a minty green than I thought it would be. I’m not even sure what to try pairing it with, maybe a dark forest green?

Anyway, all of these companies carry lots of colors in their gel eyeliners.

For Coastal Scents:
Peach Belini (I believe this is a shimmer), Sexy Pink (shimmer), Deep Plum (matte), Platinum (shimmer), Envious (matte), Indigo Blue (matte), Silk White (matte), 24k (shimmer), Turquoise (shimmer), Truffle (matte), Sky Line (matte), Grape Vine (shimmer) True Black (matte).

I’ve heard that the mattes (with the exception of True Black), are not as good as the shimmers. I can’t confirm or deny this because I haven’t tried their mattes. Of the colors I don’t have, I think I’d like to pick up Peach Belini. They retail for $6.95 and sometimes Coastal Scents does a Buy 2 Get 1 Free sale.

For Aromaleigh Cosmetics:
Black Out (matte), Chocolate Mousse (matte), Endangered (matte), Scuba Dive (matte), Magnetism (shimmer), Tanzanite (shimmer), Penny (shimmer), Ivy League (shimmer), Marcasite (shimmer), Tidal Wave (shimmer), Venomous (matte), Black Cherry (shimmer), Peacock (shimmer).

I’ve heard all of these colors are great. Of the colors I don’t have, I’d like to get Peacock and Penny. They retail for $12.75 USD (you can get them for 25% off whenever Aromaleigh has a sale on them).

For MAC:
Blitz & Glitz (shimmer), Shade (matte), Macroviolet (shimmer), Dipdown (matte), Silverstroke (shimmer), Blacktrack (matte), Rich Ground (shimmer), Waveline (slight shimmer, mostly matte).

Again, I’ve heard all of these colors are great. They retail for $15.00 USD

A quick glance at Sephora shows that there are other brands of eye liners in this style:
Stila’s Eyes & Shine Smudge Pot Trio which is $32 for a Black (matte), Bronze (bronze shimmer),& Grey (matte)
Make Up For Ever’s Aqua Creamliner, which are $20 each.
MUFE’s colors appear to be all matte.
and
Smashbox’s Jet Set Waterproof Eye Liner which are $22 each.
Smashbox’s colors appear to be all matte as well.

I cannot say how good Smashbox, MUFE or Stila’s liners are, but I can personally attest to how great Aromaleigh’s, Coastal Scents’ and MAC’s gel liners are. They really do stay put on me all day.

I also find them easy to apply, as I use one of a few tools:
Bent Eyeliner Brush – I have 2 by Sonia Kashuk from Target.
A Push Brush – I have this exact brush from Aromaleigh. It’s made of taklon and I love it.
A Fine Liner Brush – I have this exact brush and I like it.
Small Angle Brush – I have several from different brands, including MAC and I like them a lot.
You can find out more about the tools I like over at this Mythbuster Beauty article that I wrote.
