Hello Cotton
I loove Too Faced Shadow Insurance! I used to be a big UDPP fan but the product waste was just too much. If they revamped the bottle (again) I might try it again in Sin.
Also hi! I got here via the Mineral Makeup Mutiny site, I've been visiting for a while & your swatches have just prompted me to make my first mineral order via Aromaleigh for the En Pointe collection
I'm a frustrated Ballerina.
Hi VermillionRush,
Yay! Another TFSI fan! I couldn't stand the thought of having to saw a bottle of UDPP in half. I think the bottle shape is cute but so impractical.
Welcome to my blog
I think you will love the En Pointe Collection. Ballet is near and dear to Kristen of Aromaleigh, and En Pointe was inspired by ballet (as you can tell!). I love the textures and finishes of those shadows.
Please let me know what you decide to try!
I still need to try TFSI. I swear though, I'm hooked on UDPP, I just ordered a replacement for it, too. Which I'm kind of pissed at myself for doing, because if I can figure out how to apply the Detrivore primer so it works for me, I'd really rather just use that. I can understand not wanting to deal with hassle, though, it's definitely a bit of a process to get it on so it works. xD
This is a very helpful review. Thanks for taking the time to swatch, photograph, and describe each primer.
I nearly always use the Aromaleigh light primer. Sometimes I use the Aromaleigh cream eyeshadow in Bare Necessity, but some colors don't seem to adhere very well to it (especially the Elemental Lustres and some of the bright, sparkly shades from the rocks! line).
I have been happy with the performance of the AL light primer. It's easy to apply and "grabs" the color well. It rarely creases on me, and then only after a really long day or a situation where I might perspire a bit (i.e. ballet class, long shift @ work).
I have been looking at the TFSI for a while now, and this helped me decide to try it.
Hi Lindsey,
I really really REALLY love TFSI.
It lasts all day for me out in the hot sun, walking around Epcot in the Florida heat, even when I'm sweating.
Let me know if you pick up any tricks with Detrivore! I just think that my lids are annoying.
Hi Ella,
Yay I'm so glad you find it helpful!
The Aromaleigh Light Primer is great and vibrant, I just find it difficult to get it to not crease sometimes. Robyn was sweet and told me the trick with tapping.
I hope that you like the TFSI when you try it. I'd love to hear your thoughts.
I love Detrivore, as you already know! I can't wear TFSI or UDPP since I'm apparently allergic to something in it…haven't figured out what it is though! Although I did notice when I used to use them that they don't make the shadows look more pigmented or anything.
Hi Lisa Kate,
I think it was you and Lindsey (and maybe two others) who kept talking about Detrivore's primer, so I decided to order it. I'm going to play with more to see if I can make it work, but the first time I wore it, it creased within 20 minutes, which was upsetting
To me UDPP doesn't look any more vibrant than MAC's Paint Pot in Bare Study. To me, TFSI looks almost as vibrant as Detrivore and Aromaleigh Light Primer.
Do you know what you're allergic to in TFSI?
My friend is allergic to TFSI, Aromaleight Light Primer, and UDPP. I'm trying to help her find an e/s primer, and she has super oily lids.
I may let her try the Detrivore to see if it works for her.
thanks for this review, it was really helpful.
Ive always wanted to try TFSI but its almost impossible to find in Australia and its just so expensive that i dont see the point.
Usually i just use foundation or a coloured gel liner with Fyrinnaes Epoxy on top.
Im really interesting in trying the Detrivore primer, but i have oily lids so the Aromaleigh eye & lip primer would probably work best.
Hi Angie,
I'm glad you found it helpful!
Can you order TFSI through Amazon.com? (I'm making an assumption that there's an Amazon.com for Australia).
I'll be playing with the Detrivore primer more to see if I can make it work for my oily lids. If I can, I'll be sure to post a detailed blog about it.
This was really helpful! I swear by UDPP, followed by a base such as the Revlon Illuminance Creme Shadows or NYX Eyepencil in Milk. Sometimes I'll just use UDPP and Kyolan aquacolors though.
After seeing this I'm going to try TFSI and possibly the Aromaleigh Light Primer. I wish the Aromaleigh primer didn't crease, because it looks to be one of the best in terms of color.
Have you tried Pixie Epoxie or do you just consider that a base instead of a primer? That looks like something else I'd like to try.
Hi Jessika,
I use Nyx Jumbo Eye Pencils or indelible cream eye shadows or MAC Paint Pot in Blackground or Delft or Fyrinnae Pixie Epoxy on top of TFSI.
So like:
1. Too Faced Shadow Insurance
2. Pixie Epoxy, or Nyx Jumbo eye pencil
3. eye shadows
The Aromaleigh Light Primer may not crease on you. I just tend to have really oily lids for some reason. That's why I normally don't put mascara on my lower lashes (except by accident) because then I end up with it transferring and smudging.
I LOVE Pixie Epoxy
I tend to use the Nyx Jumbo Eye Pencil in Cottage cheese, but sometimes Black Bean, too.
I'm glad you liked the comparison
Thank you so much!
I have heard that Monistat Chafing Relief Powder works really well too, I think I read about that on a BE forum but I haven't tried it yet, have you tried that one yet?
I have really really oily lids, so far the UD liners are the only ones I can get to stay put but eye shadows always crease. I should try the Too Faced, I'll put it on my Christmas list!
Hi Jessica,
You're quite welcome!
I've never tried Monistat Chafing Relief Powder. You say it works as an eye shadow primer?
The UD liners work well on my lids despite how oily I am, and the gel eyeliners work really really well, too.
I definitely recommend the TFSI
Phyrra,
Oh, I know about the annoying eyelids. Mine are oily as well, which is why I use UDPP, because I've heard it's best for oily lids, but since I just found out you have the same problem, and TFSI works for you, I'm really itching to try it now. I'll let you know about Detrivore. I'm going to keep trying it through next week, to see if I can work it out so that I don't get the creasing.
Hi Lindsey,
Definitely keep me posted
UDPP creased on my oily lids, which really surprised me since I'd heard it was good for oily lids too.
This comes at a great time for me – I've been using Fyrinnae's primer for awhile, but I'm not happy, I still have creasing problems. Apparently my lids are rather oily. So I've been wondering if I should pick up TFSI or UDPP, because those are the two I usually hear about, and this has definitely settled the question for me! Thank you so much.
Hi WitchWords,
I've not tried Fyrinnae's eye shadow primer, but I have tried their Velvet Gel-Silica Primer for the face, and their Pixie Epoxy (which is an eye shadow base meant to go on top of primer). I can vouch for Pixie Epoxy being awesome
I hope that you like TFSI!
Thanks for another excellent primer review, Phyrra. Your reviews and help got me hooked on TFSI and Pixie Epoxy, and I LOVE them!
The Detrivore primer looked so excellent in the swatches… such a bummer that it creased on you. I have that problem with the creme shadows, too… unless I put TFSI under them. But I find that the shadows look more vibrant over Pixie Epoxy, so I have been going that route lately.
Thanks again!
Phyrra, the Monistat Gel is sometimes used as a face primer. I've not heard of anyone trying it on their eyes, so I couldn't say if it works or not. It's specifically the chafing gel, not any of the other products.
TFSI didn't work well for me. It tended to crease, came out of the tube separated, and I actually broke the end seal on my tube while trying to mix it. After that I gave up. UDPP works well, but I've settled on the BE eye primer for now. It lasts, doesn't separate, and I can use a tube for quite a few months.
I used UDPP because it seemed everyone on youtube was using, and I did hack open the bottle to get the rest out. It was such a pain I have another to hack open but I'm too lazy to do it again lol. But I can't bring myself to toss it because it was $20! And after seeing what's left in the tube the first time, it's like tossing $12 away! The last stuff I scraped out eventually became unusable. It didn't spread well and showed up splotchy. It was kind of a waste either way…
I even have a backup but haven't cracked it open because I found the joys of Too Faced! I think people may be more likely to buy the UDPP instead of the TFSI because of the price. At Sephora here, I think TFSI is $4 more.
I'm still working on that lil blue tube though. I bought a second but I don't think I'll need it until atleast the new year.
I really want to try the Detrivore primer after seeing how bright everything was!
My eye lids are dry & sensitive, here are the ones I've tried:
D
-TFSI: Very good
-UDPP: This can be very good on oily lids but it's much too dryig for mine.
-GOSH primer & waterproof eyeshadows: One of my favorites
-Detrivore: Works very well (just have to apply the tiniest amount) and pigments look almost foiled! Didn't work well with matte eye shadows.
-Lauress: Ok/good but maybe not for oily lids
-Pure Luxe primer: worst I've ever tried, now I know what creasing means
-Lumene (new one): ok/good
-MAC paints bare canvas: terrible, pigments looked washes out.
I absolutely love UDPP. It doesn't crease on me at all and my colors stay super all day. One thing though is in order for it to work really well all you need is a little bit. I then use my finger to even it out. I never have any creasing and I do have oily skin. Now I just discovered Smashbox lid primer. I really love this one too. No creasing and holds color in place too….It is flesh colored and you use a wand but very little and even out with the finger. Same price as UDPP. I don't mind paying for it if it is going to work….I think you can get carried away with the wand and apply too much and then yes you will get creasing if you dont blend it out really well…My favorite hands down….
TFSI is the only primer that I've tried that doesn't crease on me. And the shadows look truer to color on top of this than they do on top of the others I've tried. Sometimes cream eyeshadows crease on me, sometimes not. I like the NYX pencils, but they almost always crease on me. Thanks for the comparison!:)
Great review on all the different primers! I have tried a couple of these, but Too Faced Shadow Insurance is still my fave. It works the best for me.
I swear it is so shocking sometimes to see how much a product would cost by ounce..lol I would never buy anything at those prices!
No, I'm not sure what it is that I'm allergic to in UDPP or TFSI…but I *do* think that Detrivore primer would work well on your friend. It's made of vegan, all natural ingredients which generally are easier on eyes. She should definitely try!
I find I get longer non-creasing wear with the Aromaleigh primer if I set it with the Ultra Resolution Finishing powder in clear before applying shadow and/or apply an indelible cream shadow before applying the Aromaleigh primer (make sure to let the cream shadow dry first, though, before applying the primer).
I need to pick up the Two Faced primer!
Hi Melissa,
You're quite welcome!
I'm so glad that you like TFSI and Pixie Epoxy.
Detrivore may not crease on you, it may just be my funky lids.
I tried TFSI plus dabbing some Detrivore on today and I didn't have creasing, but I also couldn't tell the difference than when I just use TFSI.
Hi Apriltini,
I'd heard of the Monistat Gel for face primer, but not for the eyes.
I'm sorry to hear about your trouble with TFSI! I wonder if you had a bad bottle? I've never had my TFSI separate but the lockdown eye shadow I have has done that a time or two.
I think I've had my tube of TFSI since January, but I can't find my receipt to confirm it.
I'll have to check out the BE primer.
Hi Mushu,
I've seen those videos! They're quite popular. It's just too much effort for me to saw a bottle in half. I'd cut my finger off
Hi AxsDenied,
Yep, I'm with you on the joys of too faced
Yes you can definitely see that Detrivore was super bright!
Hi Nea,
Thank you for sharing!
I'll have to look for the Gosh primer to try.
I have the MAC Paint in Bare Canvas. I used to use it to keep my mascara/eyeliner from transferring and giving me raccoon eyes.
Hi Krista,
I wish that UDPP didn't crease on me!
You like the Smashbox primer? I've not seen it.
Hi Laura,
The trick with the cream pencils that I use is:
1. I apply TFSI
2. I apply the cream pencil, usually blending it a bit with my finger
3. then put on the shower.
Hi Mama Jen,
Yay I'm glad that you liked the review.
Yeah I had to go figure out the price by ounce because I was curious!
Hi Lisa Kate,
She's not sure what ingredients she's allergic to either.
I'm going to let her try the Detrivore to see if it works on her. She's got super oily lids and most things crease on her.
Hi Tally,
Oooh that's a good idea, to set it with the powder.
Definitely try TFSI, I do swear by it.
I've been eying the Pixie Epoxy since it came out…didn't realize it was meant to go over primer though, so I'm glad for that bit of info! I really will have to check it out, sounds like it's worth it. So now on my shopping list…TFSI, Pixie Epoxy both. I use Fyrinnae's Velvet Gel face primer, too, and I really like it. I had never used face primer before, but it looked like a good idea when I was getting stuff from them, and they're so reasonably priced!
Hi WitchWords,
The face primer is great, too.
Yep, Fyrinnae's site says to use it over a primer. I basically apply it with my finger, let it get a bit tacky, and then apply shadows
On a related note, have you ever tried clear lip liner? I want to get one since I have a ton of lippies and it's near impossible to find liners that match/coordinate with the "odder" colors. Right now I'm torn between Mally Roncal's Lip Fence, Too Faced's Borderline Lip Pencil, and Urban Decay's 24/7 Glide-On Lip Pencil in Ozone. Or would I be better off with a base? Or both? Aah, makeup is so agonizing when you're on a tight budget!
Actually my video has nothing to do with cutting the bottle open. I'd end up cutting a finger off also, hehe. =D All I do is I heat up a glass of water in the microwave for about 1min and then test to make sure its not burning hot and then I put the UDPP bottle in it and it melts the primer so it goes down to the bottom of the bottle and I live it in there till the water cools down then i set the bottle out so the primer will solidify again. I've been doing this for awhile now and it still works as good as ever. =)
Of course I don't think anyone else except me has tried it so. I'm really curious for someone else to try it and see if it works for them like it works for me. =)
Oh and I deleted my previous comment because I just now read the info above the comment box and saw you don't like it when people post links in your comments. Sorry! My boyfriend is always reminding me to read everything before doing something. hehe
Hi Photosynthesia,
Yes! I like the Too Faced Borderline. That's what I have.
Hi Mushu,
Ahh ok!
I don't mind people posting some links sometimes. What I specifically want to prevent is people posting links to their own blogs/websites that are spammers.
Since I've only ever had the UDPP travel size, and it creases on me, I've never bought the big bottle. I got my little travel size when I got my UD sustainable shadow box set.
Excellent post!!
Hi Crystal,
Thank you!
Hi Phyrra!
Just wanted to let you know that I'm so glad I found your blog (via Aromaleigh). I've been wondering how to choose a eyeshadow primer since I've never before purchased one, and this post helped me tremendously! I am sitting here saying "wow!" at your thoroughness and attention to detail, and since we both have pretty much exactly the same complexion/skin type, I feel confident in following your advice.
Following you on my Google Reader now! Keep up the great work!
โฅ wefflet
Hi Wefflet,
Yay I'm glad you like it
I'm so glad if this helps.
I'd love to hear what you decide on and how it works for you.
Thanks, this was a great review! I found it on Elke's weekend beauty read. I read on your profile you like reading fantasy books, may I recommend books by Charles De Lint.
Hi Denise,
Glad you like it
I think I've read some Charles de Lint. He was one of the first writers to do the modern fantasy. I loved his book The Blue Girl.
hi, great review and comparison there! Indeed really really helpful. I'm currently using UDPP which I think is not that great as how it is highly raved around. haha..
However, I've ordered TFIS and cant wait to try it!
Hi ShaynaJo,
Glad it helps!
I hope that you like TFSI
this might be a little late but I have the same problem as angie. australia doesn't have tfsi much around here. as far as i'm aware of there is no amazon for australia only. I know there are supposed to be a few stores in the city that have it but I'm not just going to the city for it and the cost is just incredible, so expensive
so as has been said, i make do with cream foundation, eyeliner, etc. I know there's a guerlain one but the cost is like daylight robbery and I doubt it would work well.
Hi Porcelaine,
I wish I knew what to suggest. It's just the one that works the best for me. However, you might do well if you use Detrivore and I bet they ship to Australia. I just have annoying oily lids. Oh! I've also heard good things about the Gosh primer, but I haven't yet tried it.
Thanks Phyrra, I just ordered the Detrivore one, and they do ship internationally, for $5US. Have you used the silk naturals one? That is what I have been using recently.
Hi Lily King,
I haven't tried the Silk Naturals one yet, but I'll add it to my list.
