Hi-Fi Cosmetics – My Review

Several weeks ago I received some samples from Veronica, the owner of Hi-Fi Cosmetics. I also placed an order for samples. I loved the products so much that I took advantage of the sale that she had over Black Friday/Cyber Monday and ordered several full sizes.

Hi-Fi Cosmetics is a mineral makeup store on Etsy and it is owned and run by Veronica, who is a certified makeup artist. Her skill and passion for makeup certainly show in her products.

These are the samples that Veronica sent me.

The samples that I purchased.

My Black Friday purchases.

Now that I’ve had a chance to try everything out, I wanted to put up my review :)

I’ve now had a chance to do several looks with her colors and I like them.

Beautiful Nightmare on the lid with Living Large haloed around the eye.

Distortion on the lid with Live by Passion on the lower lash line and Hail Caesar on the browbone.

Raindrops on Roses on the lid with Hail Caesar on the browbone.

Front Page on inner lid, Rising Tide on outer lid, Swimming through the Ashes crease, Hail Caesar on browbone mixed with Dream On.

I’ve found all of the colors easy to apply, with the exception of Rising Tide. It’s a bit tricky because it needs a sticky base to be fully appreciated. I did let Veronica know this and she said she appreciated the feedback. I think some of the colors really shine when used with Pixie Epoxy, such as Live Large.

Live Large is my FAVORITE shade by Hi-Fi. It’s an extremely vivid violet with blue iridescence. It looks AMAZING when it’s used with Pixie Epoxy. Just, simply amazing. LOVE LOVE LOVE it.

It’s stated on each color that you get about a tsp of color in a 5g jar with sifter, and it also list the ingredients. So there is no question or worry about what you’re getting in your eye shadows since the ingredients are clearly labeled on each full size jar. Each eye shadow is $4.99, and sometimes there are buy 1 get 1 free sales, which is really nice.

So eye shadows are great, but she has more than that. She has Glam Rock Eye Glitz, which is glitter in a gel formula. I picked up two of the colors, Electric (a hot pink fuschia glitter) and No Need for Tears. These apply easily and the color is really nice. So far I’ve used them along my lower lash line. I applied with a thin eyeliner brush, like I use for gel eyeliner.

I also tried the Gel blush in Amore. Amore is a bright coral with golden flecks. I applied it sheerly and was pleased with the tint of color it gave me. It blended down nicely and had a fairly natural looking flush. When I layered on a bit more, it looked cool, too.

I’ve emailed back and forth with Veronica a ton, asking questions about products, about how she makes her makeup, and Veronica has always answered my emails quickly and been very forthcoming with anything I’ve inquired about.

So overall I’m left feeling good about Veronica and Hi-Fi Cosmetics:
1. Veronica has provided me with good customer service, being quick to answer my emails.
2. I feel like her products are creative and beautiful. Just look at Live Large!!!
3. I like that it seems like the full size jars are the industry standard and full of product.
4. I think $4.99 is a good price, especially when there are Buy 1 Get 1 Free deals.
5. Ingredients are listed for the full size products that I  purchased.
6. Turn around time for shipping is pretty fast.

Would I order from Hi-Fi again?
Yes! I have several times, taking advantages of sales that she’s had!

Would I recommend Hi-Fi?
Absolutely! I’m very happy with my purchases and I think the colors, especially Live Large, are gorgeous!

    Hi PowerLifterChick,
The first one is the Blue Shadow from Revlon's new line. Revlon sent me those lashes to try, but I would buy them in multiple colors if they made them! I emailed the PR person who sent me the lashes suggesting they make them in different colors, but I never got a response back, which was a bit disappointing. She said she wanted feedback on the lashes and I gave them to her.

    Hi Nea,
    Thank you!
So glad you like Hi-Fi, too.

And now I have yet another company to add to my "buy from in the future" list. It really grows much more quickly than it decreases, thanks to you and Grey. ;)

I'm still waiting on my order. I'm becoming impatient with seeing everyone's hauls/posts! Oh the horror! :-P I can't wait to play with mine. :-) Hopefully it will arrive soon.

I was very intrigued by her eyeshadow colors, but then I noticed bismuth among the ingredients. I got nervous and chickened out on ordering. Is bismuth not as much of a problem if it's for the eye area? After seeing your pic, I'm seriously jonesing for Distortion. That is one gorgeous lookin' green. I'm pondering the idea of an order again, hmm.

Oops, sorry for the weird username! I usually log in to my Google account to make comments here, but it's down right now. So I made a Typepad account, and have no clue how to work it apparently. Anyhoo, my name is Andrea, not 6p01287664b310970c :)

What does "certified" make-up artist mean? I didn't know there was a certification process for that profession, although I guess it makes sense. Hair stylists are certified by the state they work in; I know in my state it's basically for sanitation reasons.

  15. Corvida December 18, 2009 at 3:50 am #

    P.S. @Andrea aka 6p01287664b310970c
To my knowledge, bismuth oxychloride irritation isn't universal, it's more like an allergy. (Not sure if it's an immediate, permanent reaction or a sensitizer.) If it bothers the rest of the skin on your face, it will probably bother your eyes; it could even be worse since eye tissue is more delicate. If bismuth doesn't bother you now, the only way to see if it'll bug your eyes is to try it out.

IMO, avoiding bismuth in cosmetics is like avoiding peanut butter because you know people can be allergic to peanuts (except a bismuth reaction isn't nearly as severe as a peanut one). Statistically, neither will probably hurt you, but there is a small chance. If that chance is worrisome enough for you to never eat peanut butter/use bismuth cosmetics, avoid away. Personally, I love PB&J's.

My skin breaks out from silica and bismuth but I can use both ingredients in eyeshadows and even in blushes. The amount is perhaps smaller?

  17. Phyrra December 18, 2009 at 11:20 am #

    Hi Andrea,
I've not had a problem with her eye shadows or gel liners yet, and my eyes tend to be sensitive.

    Hi Corvida,
I think if you work for MAC or any of the big makeup counters they make you go through a training process to become certified.

    Hi Nea,
Interesting! It's gotta be that the percentage of products is smaller then.

Omg, just got my Hi-Fi order, and love it! I wish I didn't own so many shadows already ;) I am in love with Raw Shock, just as I thought :) It is a satiny smooth, slightly shimmery warmish bright green.

The colors are really well made, apply smoothly and pigmented. They also come with sifters, which I like, so that when I open a container, pigment doesn't fly all over the place. There are various finishes: satin-shimmer, metallic, duotone (some really awesome color called "Prince Charming"). She sent me a HUGE free sample of one of her lip glazes, called Strawberry Fields. I don't see it listed on her site, but that is probably just a glitch (Raw Shock wasn't on the site, so I contacted her and within a day or two, it was back up). It is berry colored with a hint of fuschia and green sparkles.

So all in all, for my buy 2, get one full sized shadow free deal (on until the end of April), I was also sent 3 free shadow samples (1/4 teaspoon in a baggie, according to the website) and a huge sample pot of lip gloss. I also received 2 business cards and a Hi-Fi magnet. Nice, eh? The owner seems not only to know how to market herself well, but also backs up her marketing with very high quality pigments.

    Hi Tally,

Yep, Hi-Fi makes some fantastic shadows.
