The Joys of Waxing

While I’m sure that many people have both positive and negative experiences with waxing, the vast majority of my experiences have been positive. For the first time 3.5 weeks ago, I had my underarms waxed. My arms seemingly stayed smooth until Sunday when I noticed the hair had grown back, so I went in today to get my eye brows and underarms touched up.

My freshly waxed eyebrows.

The AMAZING thing that I noticed is that my underarm hair grew back in thinner, finer and softer than it was before. It was almost like another type of hair, because previously it had been pretty coarse. My esthetician, Sonya (from Cameo Salon & Spa), told me that would likely be the case. She actually had mentioned that I’m a great candidate for waxing because of how sparse my body hair is, and the texture of it.

I did a little research on waxing and it seems that what I noticed is pretty in line with what happens when you wax. When you wax, that hair will exhibit less regrowth and the regrowth will be softer.

I definitely think that waxing, while it may not be for everyone, is definitely worth trying out. I’ve been doing my eyebrows now for almost 2 years, and this is only my second time for my underarms, but I’m definitely going to continue to do it. I love the results. If you’re in the Tampa area, I definitely recommend seeing Sonya, she’s quick, efficient and knowledgeable. I’m still thinking about trying out a brazilian, as well as my legs, but I haven’t done them yet.

So have you tried waxing? What do you get done?

I've had my chin, upper lip, and eyebrows waxed, but I'm not a huge fan. Since my skin is so sensitive, I tend to have a bad reaction to the wax, and end up breaking pretty awfully. I haven't tried waxing other body parts, though. I've actually just rediscovered the joys of depilitories, which I hated when I was younger, but I recently tried Veet again, and the new formula is much better and more effective than the ones I used to use.

I've had my upper lip waxed before, but it didn't work very well, a lot of hair was still left behind. I wish it would work for me. About the only thing that works well for me is threading, but I don't always have the time and money for it.(the nearest place is 30 minutes from where I live)

When I was in school and we had a waxing class, I did my upper lip once and I broke out so bad. I've had my eyebrows waxed a few times, I like it but I'd rather tweeze, because I'm poor, haha. It's not even expensive, but still.

I always loved to wax eyebrows! I had one really bad/funny experience when I was doing my friends eyebrows. Long story short, I got wax everywhere and had to peel it off..because if I would have tried to rip it off it would have left like 1/4 of her eyebrow. Aw, good times. :)

I do upper lip, bikini line, armpits, and eyebrows, all by myself. It does grow back finer, but it's going to be years when the hairs stop growing ! Wonder if it will ever happen !

Oooh, I'm a big fan of waxing! Both getting it done and doing it, haha. :)

Before I started, I had thick, dark hair on my legs and underarms that I'd have to shave every day – really embarrassing for a girl with very fair skin and blonde head hair! (I blame a little bit of Native American genes; they show up in odd ways.)

After waxing just a few times, the hair not only grew back much thinner and softer, but grew back SO slowly! When before I would literally need to shave my legs every 12 hours to keep them totally smooth, I now only have to pick up the razor every few days or so. Sometimes I go a week or more at a time, and because the hair isn't as thick or dense, no one notices. One of the best decisions I've ever made! :)

I do love threading more for my eyebrows and face, however, just because my skin is so sensitive. The skin above my brows is messed up from being ripped off so many times, lol! Threading doesn't remove any skin and gives beautiful results.

Wow, she must be good because your brows are barely even pink. Lovely!

I love waxing too. I get a monthly brazilian and can't live without it (I think my husband is a fan too LOL). :) When I had more play $$ I would get my upper leg and knees done because I can NEVER get my knees shaved properly. I'd get my brows done more often, but I tend to get a rash and have had a few techs burn my skin – the bitches!

I get my eyebrows waxed regularly since I'm terrible at keeping them groomed on my own. I tend to wait a really long time in between waxing, though. I've been known to not wax for three months! I go into the salon looking like a hairy monster, ha! I recently went to a differnt esthetician since my regular one is on maternity leave, and let's just say I'm not too happy. She made my brows so skinny, I now call them chola brows. I'm going to be filling them in for quite a long time. I'm also thinking of trying those lash/brow conditioners to help them grow faster (if that's possible). Have tried any of them?

  8. Veronica December 8, 2009 at 8:59 pm #

Wow, they look great! I have waxed my upper lip, face (yeah, I'm part werewolf), and brows, as well as my bikini area and tummy (when I was pregnant). I haven't gotten brave enough to do my legs or arms yet due to the coarseness and amount hair there. I'm a chicken, so I just stick to shaving. (Yes, I shave my arms.)

The bikini wax was awful, because I bled all over the place. I guess my ethnicity means that all my hair is really coarse and VERY deeply rooted! LOL. I've tried different methods, and no matter who does it and how, I always bleed terribly.

I'm allergic to Nair and Veet, so I mainly shave, with the exception of the upper lip, brow, and facial waxing.

My husband waxes his chest and, well… anyway… let's just say that he takes waxing better than I do! Most guys I know are too scared to do it.

    Hi Lindsey,
See, I was scared of waxing anything for years because my skin is sensitive but it's one of the few things that doens't bother it. I'm so sorry to hear that it hurts you. What depilitories do you like?

    Hi Laura,
OUCH! I've never tried threading but heard good things about it.

    Hi Julissa,
That sounds painful. I tried to tweeze my stray hairs but I tear up so bad I can't see. Yet I can handle waxing no problem.

    Hi Martian Delights,
I have no idea if it will ever stop growing but I'm so happy that it grows back finer!

    Hi JennBee,
Yay! Great to hear that it works for you.

    Hi Katrina,
Eww, I've never had a rash but that must be painful :(

    Hi Lazybeautiful,
I think the reason that I'm not red and sore is because my esthetician is so good! She's quick and is somehow able to get it done well, she only needs one pass with the wax :)

I use Aromaleigh's Lash Primer/Conditioner, but I don't think I grow faster. However, it does help me have better looking lashes.

    Hi Veronica,
I'm glad that I don't have a lot of hair, but WOW, that sounds horrible that you bled :(

For whatever reason, waxing is a type of pain that I enjoy, or even when I'm sensitive I don't mind it, but I don't think I could do it if I bled.

  10. Lindsey December 8, 2009 at 9:51 pm #

Phyrra: It's not that it hurts that badly when I get it done, but the ensuing whiteheads that pop up all over the waxed area aren't worth dealing with, and leave my skin angry for weeks (incidentally, I just realized that I said "breaking", instead of "breaking out", which is why my meaning was misconstrued. Sorry about that!).

I'm very partial to Veet's Dry Skin formula, because though my skin isn't really dry, on my legs, I love the moisturizing effect it has, where most other depilitories I've used sap all the moisture out.

  11. Phyrra December 8, 2009 at 11:33 pm #

    Hi Lindsey,
Oh hon, that is NO fun. No worries!
    You should totally review Veet's.

  12. Demoness December 9, 2009 at 10:23 am #

I used to get waxed all the time at random shops. I would lose a layer of skin & break out, but I just dealt with it because I didn't know any better.

Then, I went to cosmetology school & learned of bacteria & viral diseases, sanitation procedures & a whole slue of all around ick.

Now, I only trust my close friend to wax me because she knows of sanitation & proper wax to use on me. I don't let her do my brows because I'm really picky about the shape, it made her nervous to even touch the brows. But she's done my lip, arms, underarms, & legs.

Sadly, I can't make it the 20+ miles to see her. But I miss it. Especially underarm waxing since shaving there is so sensitive. Just wait till you've done it in the summer, you'll be so glad you did.

  13. Phyrra December 9, 2009 at 1:32 pm #

    Hi Demoness,
The Salon I go to is wonderful and extremely sanitary :)
I can't wait for the summer, either.

girls, get laser hair removal! i haven't had to wax my body for almost 2 years. laser hair removal is a godsend. the only thing i have to wax is my eyebrows b/c you can't laser there. i did my lip but that's because it's not close to your eyes but i'd do my brows if i could! maybe one day they'll figure out a small laser where you can. :-)

  15. krista carlson December 9, 2009 at 5:35 pm #

I used to always get my eyebrows waxed but it got to expensive so I do them myself. I have done my chin and upper lip and broke out like crazy…

  16. The Bloated Ewe December 9, 2009 at 5:40 pm #

    Ahh….waxing.

I currently wax my happy trail, my bikini line, and, erm, lots of other body hair I really don't feel like immortalizing on the internet! I have TONS of very dark, very thick, very black, ethnic, hair…and pale glow-in-the-dark skin. Yeah, a wonderful mix!

I TRIED waxing my armpits, but that was a fiasco. No matter how taut I tried to get my skin, I ended up bleeding tons. Of course, what I did manage to pull out made the cloth strips look like a shag carpet. I think I'll try going to aesthetician to get it done, and see if it's any different. I'd also like to get my bikini (or more) done too this summer, because trying to wax that area myself just isn't very thorough. I'm not *that* flexible, lol. Only problem is, the nearest place I'm aware of that does that kind of stuff is about an hour away :(

  17. Phyrra December 9, 2009 at 7:08 pm #

    Hi Betty,
How many treatments did you have to do?
I'm not sure if I would be a good candidate for laser hair removal, though I know I am for waxing. I don't have a lot of body hair (thankfully!), so the only places I'd want done would like, from my knees down (because everything from knees up is so sparse and blonde you can't see it), my bikini, and my underarms.

    Hi Krista,
I wonder if it was the wax you used?
Supposedly wax types make a difference.

    Hi Bloated Ewe,
Thankfully I've not bled. I don't think it's good if you bleed. That's gotta hurt.

  18. BLIX December 9, 2009 at 8:10 pm #

Wow…you'd be a brave lady to get a brazilian wax! I can't do that…waxing makes me bleed. I just pluck my eyebrows, shave my legs/ armpits and use a body hair trimmer on my bikini area. My leg hair is barely noticeable and takes forever to grow so I don't have to do much. Which is great cuz I have to admit, I'm lazy when it comes to shaving! :-0

  19. Phyrra December 9, 2009 at 11:20 pm #

    Hi Blix,
If I work up the courage to do it, I'll let you know! My leg hair is only visible from the knees down, and grows in really slow, but it is dark. From the knees up, you can't see it, it's very thin and and see-through.

  20. suzieduck December 11, 2009 at 11:34 am #

pale lips remid me of Jackie O. stunning looking eyes too.

  21. Phyrra December 11, 2009 at 1:43 pm #

    Hi Suzie,
    Very cool! Thank you :)

  22. Gabriela December 13, 2009 at 10:58 am #

I used to depilate my legs with wax years ago. Now I prefer to depilate my legs with electric shaver because I save the money and I shave when I want. I haven`t got to call for an appointment.

  23. Phyrra December 13, 2009 at 7:47 pm #

    Hi Gabriela,
I've never tried an electric shave, does it give a close shave?

  24. AFEcoMom December 13, 2009 at 11:56 pm #

I like that you mention this in your blog, I havent seen a post on waxing or the like in quite awhile! :)

For any of the people who cant do the pain of waxing, or just dont like the process, I have fallen in love with sugaring. Similar process but all natural, goes in direction of hair when they pull, and no risk of burns. I also thread my eyebrows, if any of you have heard of that process? Its a strange feeling but Ive learned to do it on my own and its like plucking but quicker LOL I recommend just googling info about both these processes, theres a lot of info out there!

I stopped waxing because I always got poor results and burns :( And with my efforts to be as green and natural as possible, waxing just doesnt work for me. But Ive seen some people with AMAZING results, as long as the person doing it knows how lol but sugaring is about the same in price and results too, and neat to watch! Its also convenient since theres a lady nearby who does it, but that may not be an option for most.

  25. Phyrra December 14, 2009 at 3:21 pm #

    Hi AfecoMom,
    Aww, glad you like it!

I'll have to look into sugaring.

I've heard of threading too, my old hair stylist swore by it.

I like the waxing but that's because the salon I go to is within walking distance of my neighborhood (a rare thing for the suburbs where I am!). I'm going to google sugaring :)

  26. Betty Girl Make-Up December 21, 2009 at 3:01 am #

everyone is different with how many treatments you need but for me, i'm pretty fair haired on my body but i wanted it GONE! lol

for laser hair this is what i needed:

    underarms – 4 or 5 i forget

upper lip – this is a new treatment i wish i had done with the rest of my body so i'll let ya know but she doesn't think i'll need more than 2 or 3.

legs (knees to toes) – i think i did 7 or 8, i forget, it's been so long, but after 1 treatment, there were places/patches where the hair never came back.

bikini – 4 or 5 treatments but after 1 treatment, there were places/patches where the hair never came back. if you need a touch up for any sparse regrowth, it's half the cost of a regular treatment and they hook you up.

  27. Phyrra December 21, 2009 at 12:39 pm #

    Hi Betty,
I think I definitely need to look into laser hair treatment. Thank you for sharing the details :)
