Transition from Teal to Pink – Adventures in DIY Hair

I wanted to take the teal out of my hair and I finally did. I used a product that I’ve used several times in the past, One n’ Only Colorfix, found at Sally’s Beauty Supply.

While it says that it’s for permanent color, I’ve used it not only with permanent color, but also with semi-permanent hair color in the past.

I separated out the teal section from my hair, and applied the Colorflix. I put a cap on my head, and I used a blow dryer directly on my hair for 15 minutes. Then I washed it out. Since I ended up missing a few spots, I did it again, for another 15 minutes with heat. Then I washed my hair.

Next I applied Manic Panic’s Hot Hot Pink to my bangs. I foiled those sections of my hair up and out of the way.

Then I mixed the following shades together:
40% Jerome Russel Punky Plum
20% Manic Panic After Midnight
20% Manic Panic Ultra Violet
20% Manic Panic Purple Haze

I applied that mix to the rest of my hair. I covered my hair with a cap and left it on for 3.5 hours.

Here’s my hair directly after I washed the color out.

There were a few spots I missed, so I redid the pink and put it in foils, and redid the other piece of hair and put a cap on and then slept in it. I washed my hair and it looked a lot better this morning!

Now, the one thing about using One n’ Only, is the hair will darken slightly. You can see how mine did darken up a bit.

(First thing this morning after I did my makeup and styled my hair.)

(This is me after I got home and put on some darker lipstick.)

I’d love to hear what you think of my results :)

How does Manic Panic work for you? Personally, I didn't have any luck at all with it, and prefer Special Effects instead.

I love the look though, it looks supercute on you. :)

I love how it looks in the last picture!

    Hi Lyndsey,
    Thank you!

    Hi Shattered,
It works well for me but I use it in a specific way. I always apply it to pre-lightened (bleached) hair. I always leave it in for 3 to 6 hours (or like last night, overnight in a few spots). I use sulfate-free shampoo and conditioner. I wash my hair every 4 to 6 days.

However, the dye that's better than Manic Panic is Jerome Russel Punky color. It just doesn't have quite the same color range.

    Hi Axs,
Thank you! I think the matching lipstick really works with the hair ;)

That's totally badass, looks like it would be uncomfortable to do it though. Was it?

Gorgeous! I wish I was as brave as you. I'm not brave enough to try it on my own or willing to pay all the money to have it done by a professional

Awesome! I did blue streaks in my hair once and it was such a hassle. You make it look so easy!

I love it! Your hair is always so pretty, and an inspiration.
I really need to do something fun with my hair… even though I'm a cosmetology student, I have yet to dye my hair. Hmmmm – now I'm off to fantasize about colors and dye!

    Hi Daniel,
No bleach involved, so no burning. It wasn't painful at all.

    Hi Jessica,
I've been doing this for probably about 14 or 15 years to myself. You may have a friend who could help :)

    Hi Lazybeautiful,
You can always go for clip in extensions ;)

    Hi PowerLifterchick,
    Thank you!

    Hi Mermaidbird,
You should totally do something fun!

Love the new colours! Turned out so nice on you! I've been thinking about dying my hair a new colour. But it's been black for so long I don't know what colour to choose. Plus I have to let my roots grow out before I could dye it. This black won't bleach out!

I loooove Purple Haze. It makes me happy. I almost picked it up, but it was when I was getting the purple out of my hair so I decided against it. Your hair looks great, though!

    Hi Apriltini,
    Thank you!

    Hi Blix,
Try the ColorFix (One n' Only) to get out the black. You may have to use it 2 or 3 times, but I've used it to take out black and go to red.

    Hi Julissa,
Yay! Glad you love Purple Haze.
    Thank you :)

Is it ok that I'm panting???? HOT HOT HOT. I would love to do something so awesome with my hair, except a current med is causing it to fall out. So I'm trying to be gentle as possible. So boring old color for me :P

You rock it for both of us ;)

  19. Phyrra December 17, 2009 at 1:04 pm #

    Hi Angel,
    Glad you like it :)
Eep! I'm sorry that your meds are causing that. One good suggestion would be to buy clip in extensions in a color you like. That is easy on your hair, and will give you color.
    http://ikickshins.net/ is a great place.
