The Cat’s Meow – Meow Cosmetics Review

When I was going through and Tidying Things Up in my blog, I was shocked to see that I’d never done a review of Meow Cosmetics as a whole. Sure, I’ve reviewed collections from them and individual products, but now it’s time for a more extensive review, since I’ve been using their products for almost two years.

First up, foundations.

Meow has 86 shades available in 3 formulas:
Purrrfect Puss – the original sheer matte foundation that you can layer for coverage
(ingredients: mica, titanium dioxide, iron oxides)
$21.95 – 3oz jar (22-30g net weight)
$10.95 – 25g jar (6-8g net weight)

Pampered Puss – designed for delicate and sensitive skin, matte foundation that you can layer for coverage
(ingredients: mica, titanium dioxide, zinc oxide, iron oxides)
$23.95 – 3oz jar (22-30g net weight)
$12.95 – 25g jar (6-8g net weight)

Flawless Feline – heavy coverage designed for comfort
(ingredients: mica, zinc oxide, titanium dioxide, boron nitrade, iron oxides
$26.95 – 3oz jar (22-30g net weight)
$14.95 – (6-8g net weight)

Originally I preferred the Purrfect Puss formula, but during the summer if I’m running around outside, my sensitive skin doesn’t like it, so I switched to the Pampered Puss and prefer that these days. The zinc oxide is soothing, especially if you have sensitive skin like I do. It really does have a matte finish.

The way foundation is organized at Meow can be a bit confusing at first. The undertones correspond to different cat breeds, and an adjective is used to denote the shade. The lovely Jen of Camellia Rose Skin Care was kind enough to help me find my color match in Meow. As I was used to never being able to find a pale enough foundation for my skin, imagine my surprise when I found I could wear not one but TWO colors from Meow! I tend to bounce back and forth between which shade I prefer, too. I have a bit of peach, cream, yellow and beige, with a pink overtone. This can make finding a foundation extremely difficult.

The first undertone I match is Siamese, which is neutral, and the shade is Inquisitive, their lightest shade.
The second undertone I match is Sphynx, which is beige, peach and pink, and the shade is Inquisitive.
So in Meow I wear either Inquisitive Siamese or Inquisitive Sphynx.
While this system may seem a bit odd to pick your foundation, if you’re having trouble you can always ask for help on the Meow Forums and Jen will be able to help you. Normally all you need to provide is a picture of your face and neck in direct sunlight with no makeup on and she’ll be able to determine your undertones and suggest shades for you to try. You can then pick up samples, which are $1 each to test out.

The Meow jars of foundation are truly a bargain, especially if you pick up the 3 oz jar size. I would consider this my holy grail foundation because of how well it matches me.

Concealers
I like the undereye concealer from Meow quite a bit. While I don’t always use it, when I do I don’t have reverse raccoon eyes. It’s matte with a silky texture and it applies easily. It comes in every shade, so you can coordinate it perfectly with your foundation. I also use it as spot concealer on any blemishes.

The undereye concealer is $11.95 for a 10gm jar (2 gram net weight).
Ingredients: mica, titanium dioxide, zinc oxide, boron nitride, iron oxides

This is definitely one of my favorite concealers.

Primers & Finishers
Meow has several primers and finishers, but I’ve only tried their newest, the Equilibrium Balancing Powder. It works nicely for me as a powder primer.

It’s ingredients are mica, silk powder, boron nitride, and allantoin. $13.95 and I believe it comes in a 20g (4 grams net wt) jar.

Glows
Meow has some awesome glow powders, which I have in several shades.

Their original Crystalline Cat Glow powder is nice. It looks white in the jar but once you apply it, it gives you a sheen without turning you into a glitterball (though I often love to be a glitterball!).

Ingredients: mica, titanium dioxide $12.95 and I believe it comes in a 20g (4 grams net wt) jar.

The tinted glows are really nice.
$13.95 20g (4 grams net wt) jar.
$9.95 10g (2-3 grams net wt) jar.

The non-LE shades I have are:
Morganite – peachy pink
Opal – mysterious neutral whisper pink with quiet flashes of unexpected fire
Moonstone – perfect pink, neither overly cool nor warm
Quartz – petal soft buttery peach/pink

People had been asking Tammy, the owner of Meow, for years to make a tinted glow. I believe she said that she was inspired by stained glass windows and that’s what helped her come up with the beautiful tinted glows.

Skinny Dippers
These are meant for contouring your face. Once again, they coordinate with your undertones. I have Light Siamese and Medium Sphynx. Interestingly enough, I often reach for Medium Sphynx more than Light Siamese. While I feel like I’m still a novice when it comes to contouring, I feel like Medium Sphynx helps me to do a pretty good job.

$16.25 – 20 g jar.
$9.75 – 10 g jar.
Ingredients:

Sunsplashers
Meow calls these the un-bronzer, which is an apt name. They give you a light bronzer glow. I definitely prefer the Light Siamese in this, but this is a pretty subtle bronzer.

$16.25 – 20 g jar.
$9.75 – 10 g jar.

Del Sol Metallic Bronzers
These bronzers, however, are definitely in another league. They’re metallic without being glittery. I prefer Corona. While I rarely feel the need to try bronzer, it’s nice to experiment on occasion. When you’re as pale as I am, and unable to tan (since I fry in about 5 minutes outside or less), it can be nice to mix things up with a light bronzer that doesn’t look gaudy or like I slapped on orange paint.

$14.50 – 20 g jar (7-8 gram net wt)
Ingredients: mica, titanium dioxide, bronze powder, silica

Blushes
Meow has several amazing blush lines. Their original line is their matte blushes:

$13.25 – 20 g jar

They have their Firefly blushes, which provide a luminescent glow.

My favorite from this collection is Illuminate.
Illuminiate is a caramel with cherry undertones and gold sparkle and sheen. I find it to be utterly soft and flattering.

In this image I’m wearing: blush in Illuminate, Pampered Puss foundation in Inquisitive Siamese, Skinny Dipper in Medium Sphynx, Glow powder in Morpho

$16.25 – 20 g jar
$9.25 – 10 g jar

The first blushes I tried from Meow were the Lush Blushes. They’re described as being saturated in vivid wet hues,  moist and creamy to the touch, with an opaline sheen of glowing  lustrous color.

My favorites are:
Feline-be-mine – a pop of coral toned cherry pink
Crush – berry through and through, cool toned and lively

$16.25 – 20 g jar
$9.25 – 10 g jar

The Masterpiece Blush collection was inspired by paintings. Many of these colors are gorgeous and quite multi-dimensional. While I believe most are vegan, a few shades contain carmine and are marked as such on Meow’s website.

My favorites are:
The Scream – crystal clear wild cherry
Midsummer’s Eve – strawberry hued with rose undertones
Starry Night – bright bubble gum pink with warm undertones
So Happy – cool crisp raspberry

$15.25 – 20 g jar
$8.25 – 10 g jar

The newest blushes are the Taboo blushes, which have a bit of duochrome color. They’re honestly lovely, and my favorite collection of blushes from Meow.

My favorites are:
Twisted – neutral toned strawberry-rose with raspberry sheen
Racy – bright  and cheery! this warm-neutral sugary sweet pink shade has a subtle golden glow
Dirty Talk – Medium hued warm coral infused with golden pink glow
Centerfold – neutral toned medium coral rose
Lust – warm-neutral toned peach-pink-mauve delights with subtle iridescence and rose glow
Exhibitionist – Neutral-cool toned earthy beige/pink with soft rose/plum undertones
Scandal – cool plum with deep  wine
Saucy – rich warm-neutral toned raspberry rouge shade with blushing pink undertone and a hint of gold iridescence

$15.25 – 20 g jar
$8.25 – 10 g jar

Wildcats!
The Wildcats collection cracks me up. They’re glittery colors meant to be worn on the body.

They come in a variety of shades and I’ve tried the Bay cat, which is blue. It’s cute.

$9.95 – 20 g jar.

Brow Beaters
This was the first brow product that I tried for my brows. It took several tries to get the right mix, but I finally figured out that a 50/50 mix of Black and Auburn was flattering on me. These work well as they’re matte, yet they seem to help hold your brow hairs in place. I apply them with an angled eyeliner brush.

$11.00 – 10 g jar.

Eye Shadows
Meow has a lot of eye shadow shades. In fact, they have over 300 shades of eye shadows. They also do seasonal LE collections which get rotated in and out of their shop. You won’t find repackaged shades here. I’ve reviewed a lot of their most recent collections:

Lost  Rainforest

Egyptian  Treasures

Halloween  2009

Friday  the 13th

Glacial  Grove

12  Pains of Xmas

But in addition to all these lovely shades, they have a matte line (Cat Eyes), a daytime line (ModernEyes), a pearl line (IdealEyes), a super sparkly line (ScandalEyes), a highly pigmented line (VandalEyes) and their liners (feliners).

The prices in these range from $7 to $10.25.

The first eye shadow collection that really got my attention at Meow was the Idealize colors they released for Fall 2008.

I’m not sure why, but I ended up loving just about every color in this collection:
Caterwaul, Pet-ulent, Witty Kitty, Claws & Effect, Purrsnickety, Bad Girl, Sabertooth, Huntress, Heavy Petting, Sexy and Tongue Tied. They’re all lovely.

The only thing I don’t like about Meow’s eye shadows are that they’re normally $10.25 for a 10g jar. I’d rather buy 5g jars for $5.50.

Customer Service
I’ve always had excellent customer service, personally. I believe all emails are answered by Elynor, who works for the owner, Tammy. Elynor is always timely in answering her emails. Whenever I’ve sent an email to Meow, I always get an automated response back letting me know that they got my email. If you ever do not get an automated response back, I would be concerned that they didn’t receive your email. Whenever I’ve had issues with my orders, they’ve always been willing to fix them, at no charge to me, which is nice. When I’ve made a mistake and ordered the wrong color of foundation, they were willing and able to fix it before they shipped my order.

Summary
I think Meow is a great company for anyone looking to get into mineral makeup. All samples are $1 each, which is great. While samples do not ship free at Meow (unless you order 35 or more), shipping costs are normally around $5 for first class mail for samples. Full size orders tend to be $6 or so. So while I’m not crazy about their shipping costs, I don’t think that they’re entirely unreasonable like some companies, either.

Meow often holds sales around the holidays. They send out newsletters and I tend to post the information in my blog.

My experience with their customer service has always been positive.

Their Pampered Puss foundation is my holy grail foundation. It’s a FANTASTIC buy for the money, especially if you purchase the large jar.

They have a ton of fantastic blushes and glows, as well as lovely eye shadows, so I believe there are colors that would appeal to most people.

I definitely recommend Meow. Let me know if you like them. Let me know if you decide to try them! I’ve been a happy customer for almost 2 years now!

Note: The fast majority of my Meow products I have purchased. Only very recently did I receive some samples of the newer collections as PR items, and I still paid for the shipping costs. This means that yes, I love to purchase Meow and I can recommend them wholeheartedly.

I just ordered some foundation samples from them =D excited!

  2. Michelle January 26, 2010 at 5:23 pm #

I've been tempted to try their foundation, primer and glow. So far all I have tried is LE shadows. I do like those very much.

    Hi Bhevarri,
    Yay, what shades?

    Hi Michelle,
I LOVE their foundation! Their primer is pretty good, some people swear by it, but I tend to prefer the gel formula from Camellia Rose Skincare or Fyrinnae over the powder primer. The glows are really nice. The glows are all really pretty.

Thanks to your blog, I found out that Meow has my miracle foundation. I have stopped shopping for foundation altogether because I know I can just get it from Meow.

I agree that their customer service is good. All of my encounters with them have been very positive.

    Thanks!

You have great timing for me with this, Phyrra! I've just gotten a bit more cash than I was expecting to have, and I desperately need a new foundation, and have been considering Meow's Pampered Puss…well, your review has cemented my decision to try it! Now if only my world will clear up enough for me to get a pic in sunlight to ask Jen for help shade-matching with, because I have NO idea what my skin under- and over-tones are at all!

  6. krista carlson January 26, 2010 at 6:37 pm #

I love Meow. I have the munchkin container of foundation and it lasts forever. The full size looks huge….I love the blushes too…I have illuminate and love it. I have a full size of that. I have full size of a few shadows. Wonderful company. I really love your Halloween 2009 look. Very amazing..

  7. Apriltini January 26, 2010 at 8:13 pm #

I've been a happy customer of theirs for a few years also. Love the Flawless Feline foundation, and can also wear Sphynx and Siamese, but in Sleek, the next darker shade. I adore the undereye concealer. I still try other foundations once in a while, but I'm perfectly happy with Meow.

  8. Dominique -aka- 美華ちゃん January 26, 2010 at 8:22 pm #

You have made me willing to try a new foundation :)

  9. KittenMittens January 26, 2010 at 9:35 pm #

I will have to try the pic trick to find my perfect foundation! I'm still using store bought :s And even that doesn't match well lol

  10. nkaneko January 26, 2010 at 10:34 pm #

I love Meow too. and completely agree with you about the Pampered Puss foundation, it is the best. The Skinny Dippers make contouring effortless, the Glow Powders are lovely, and I really like the Oily Skin Primer Powder and the Top Cat Finishing Powders. As for eyeshadows, my very favorites are the special edition Halloween and Friday the 13th colors, but I have also found gorgeous colors in the regular lines. I have a varied collection of eyeshadows, cheek and face colors, and liner pencils from several different companies (I am looking forward to receiving my first order from Fyrinnae thanks to your recommendation) and have tried out several different brands of mineral foundation, but I always end up going back to my Pampered Puss foundation by Meow – it is absolutely the best.

I really like them too :) I've ordered from them a couple of times. The only thing I don't like them is the high shipping costs (international). My last order included a full size Equilibrium and the shipping was $14.95, that's just crazy!

I placed an order to them in the beginning of January, and never receive a shipping notification email. Yesterday I emailed them asking if my order has been shipped or if there's something wrong with it. Today I received an email saying that my order has been shipped on January 20th, and they're really sorry that I hadn't received a shipping notification. :) That's some nice customer service! I was so afraid that I had lost my money, haha.

  13. Sagu January 27, 2010 at 7:40 am #

…oh, crazy typos -.- The only thing I don't like ABOUT them. Never receiveD.

  14. Phyrra January 27, 2010 at 12:37 pm #

    Hi Painted Moogle,
    You're welcome :)

    Hi WitchWords,
Jen is fantastic, so she'll be able to help. Previously at the MAC makeup counter I was always matched to NW15 or NC15, because that's the palest shade they offered, and it was still too dark for me!

    Hi Krista,
    Thank you!

    Hi Apriltini,
I've never tried the Flawless Feline but I was curious about it. Yeah their undereye concealer works really well!

    Hi Dominique,
I'd love to hear what you think of it :)

    Hi Axs,
I always had bad luck with drugstore and even mall foundation.

    Hi Nkaneko,
I still feel like a newbie when I try to contour, but I think the Skinny Dippers to help a lot.

The Friday the 13th shadows are probably my favorite eye shadow collection.

    Hi Mai,
Yes, I know about the sale :) It's great! I posted about it a few days ago when I received the newsletter from Meow.

    Hi Sagu,
Yeah their shipping costs internationally, I've heard, can be a bit high.
I'm glad that you heard back from them!

  15. Shannon January 27, 2010 at 3:18 pm #

I love Meow, especially their foundations, and some of the blushes I've tried. The glows are also awesome. I should try out more of their blush shades based on your recs, since we wear the same foundations. I did in the past dislike all Meow eyeshadows, as even with primer they'd have zero color payout and fade ultra fast. Their more recent collections starting with Egyptian Treasures have seemed better though.

  16. Phyrra January 27, 2010 at 3:20 pm #

    Hi Shannon,

I wasn't really impressed with their eye shadows either until the Fall 2008 collection. Then I was like… Wow, these are nice. The Rainforest was pretty good, the Egyptian was awesome, and I love their Halloween and Holiday shadows.

Since I always wear primer these days, I don't tend to experience the shadows fading, but before I wore primer, they'd go away after half a day.

  17. Robyn January 30, 2010 at 11:30 pm #

What a thorough review. Thank you!

  18. Phyrra January 30, 2010 at 11:33 pm #

    Hi Robyn,
You're welcome! I'm glad you found it useful :)

  19. Sakuradesu March 19, 2010 at 6:34 pm #

Thanks for the review! I was thinking to get only eyeshadows and some brushes, but now I think I'll get foundation. I'll get the same as you because the way you describe your skin sounds like mine! That helps me because it is a bit complicated to see what's the perfect colour, and I'm also very sensitive skin. I think I'll also get Purrr-fect cover Concealer for my cheeks, they're always very red!

  20. Phyrra March 19, 2010 at 6:37 pm #

    Hi Sakuradesu,
    You're quite welcome!
I hope that you're able to find a perfect match :)
I REALLY prefer the Pampered Puss formula because of my sensitive skin. I've heard good things about the Flawless but I haven't tried it. I've been using Inquisitive Sphynx more than Inquisitive Siamese lately, but both are a good match for me.

  21. Sakuradesu March 19, 2010 at 6:48 pm #

    Thanks :)
I'll comment about it when I get the products :) I want to order in 2 weeks or so. No extra money left for make up this month :) This month was for Amy's Sugarpill wonderful products :D
I'm waiting for my second order hehe, tbh your swatches helped me to decide some shades of my 2nd oder ^^

  22. Phyrra March 19, 2010 at 6:58 pm #

    Yay awesome!
That's one of the reasons I do swatches is that I find them to be really helpful myself!

  23. Manon June 1, 2010 at 1:18 pm #

    thank you for the information
