Unii Palettes – A Review

Recently I was contacted by Minna, the woman who created Unii Cosmetics and the Unii palettes to see if I wanted to try a palette. I took a look at the website and immediately loved the concept. It’s a palette with a magnetic bottom and mirror that you can then apply any sort of depotted product in that you want. I told her that I would love to try one of her palettes, and so she sent me all 5 colors immediately. I was shocked at that!

The colors are:
Eggplant – a beautiful purple
Snow – an iridescent white
Pomegranate – a lovely rich red
Twilight – a deep blue
Lemongrass – a vivid yellow

I really feel like Eggplant and Snow are my favorites, though I certainly like Pomegranate and Twilight, too. Lemongrass is the only color that I’m not really fond of and that’s because I’m just not a yellow person. I was surprised by how much I loved Snow though.

Once the palettes are open you can see that they have a repositionable thumb press. You can put this wherever you like, wherever it’s convenient for you, to let you hold the palette. You can even take this out if you don’t want it.

The palettes come with instructions on how to depot or where you can buy refills, as well as magnets for the bottom of any pans that might be missing them.

The depotting method mentioned above is one I’d never heard of, but I bet it would work well.

This one explains how to apply a magnet and label. So if you have a shadow or blush, etc, that doesn’t come with a magnetic bottom, you can easily add one.

However, these instructions are really helpful to someone who may not have done this before.

To test out the palette, I used my MAC refills, which I had in 4 separate quads. They all fit nicely into this palette with some space left over. So I believe that I could easily fit in 12 MAC refill pans.

The palette is fairly lightweight but sturdy, and really reminds me of Mac computers, because of the color scheme. I would love to see a black iridescent and a yellow-green iridescent palette offered.

I really like this concept and it has made me want to try pressing some pigments with the Hard Pressed mixing medium that I was sent by Beauty from the Earth, especially since I will be able to press a few blushes ;)

The cost for the palette is $29 with free shipping within the US.
If you buy 2 palettes it is $56 (so $28 each).
If you buy 3 or more they’re $78 (so $27 each).

Directly from the website it says that the containers have a rubberized seal that prevents leaks, which is useful.
The size dimensions are:
Inner dimensions : 2.8″D x 5.4″L x0.4″Thick
Outer dimensions : 3.7″D x 6″L x0.7″Thick

I really like the versatility of these palettes and I think they’re a great idea.
While $29 is more that I’ve paid for empty palettes in the past, those palettes didn’t allow me to put in any shadow or blush of my choice.

So what do you think? Would you use a Unii palette?

I'm a sucker for good design, and I really love the design of those. I really like the instructions and how it all folds up, too. I can imagine this'd be great for anyone pro or who travels a lot, and wants to have their must-have items all sorted and accessorised.

    Hi Evil Angel,
    I think they're neat!

    Hi Ana,
    Me too!
I think they were really well thought out.

Those look like they'd be really convenient. TKB sells something similar. I might use one for traveling. :-)

    Hi Blix,
I really like it! Especially since it is something I can configure on my own.

Those are seriously cute :) they look really well made, and I love that they come with depotting instructions

    Hi SilhouetteScreams,
I definitely think they're cute. I also like that they're sturdy without being heavy, and they have a mirror in them ;)

Oh, these are so nice! I have been using a gift card tin that I got for a $1.49 from Michael's to hold my pans. This is so much classier! Do you have the dimensions for them, Phyrra?

  9. Thia Winter January 9, 2010 at 8:54 am #

Oh how cool! :D I'm going to have to look into them! That would make life easier for long trips!

Oh my god, these look fantastic! I've been hearing all the buzz around the "Z-Palettes" or whatever, but I didn't find them very pretty… These are so much better! Beautiful colors, sleek design, and I love that "thumb hold" thing! They're so cute! I want one. :D

    Hi Junerose,
I just added the dimensions on the palettes to my post, directly from the Unii website.

    Hi Thia,
It certainly piqued my interest enough that I'm thinking of pressing some shadows again!

    Hi AnatuMonat,
I went and looked up the Z-Palettes last night. They apparently have a clear lid and no mirror. They're made of matte paper instead of the sturdy plastic. It also doesn't look like they have a rubberized seal. So the Z Palettes don't seem to be as well made in my opinion.

    Holy crap, those are beautiful.

But $29 each? (probably plus shipping) Eek!

    I like the yellow one.

  13. Phyrra January 9, 2010 at 11:51 am #

    Hi Emily,
The site says free shipping ;)

Wow, those are so cute! I don't know if i could justify the price though. I really like how they have the instructions, that seems really useful. How generous of her to send you all 5 colours!

  15. KittenMittens January 10, 2010 at 3:26 pm #

Those are pretty cute but I do wish it was a tad bigger to fit a bit more for the price. The Mac one can fit a bit more for half the price (more if you pop the pesky separator out) but of course it's not as adorable :)

  16. Phyrra January 10, 2010 at 9:24 pm #

    Hi Lillian,
    Yeah, it was completely unexpected!

    Hi Axs,
You can pop out the separator in the MAC quads? Interesting. I didn't know that. I think what is cool about these is the versatility to allow pans of all shapes to fit in.

  17. Julissa January 11, 2010 at 4:28 pm #

    Those are snazzy!

  18. Phyrra January 11, 2010 at 6:58 pm #

    Hi Julissa,
Aww thanks, they are super cute!

  19. KittenMittens January 12, 2010 at 12:30 am #

I'm not sure about the lil quads but I've seen people pop the separator out the big one (15 I think) I think Blix did that with hers? I may be wrong :D So many makeup ideas, so many blogs, I get mixed up and lose my place lol

  20. Phyrra January 12, 2010 at 6:14 pm #

    Hi Axs,
    Ahh, I didn't know :)

  21. oh.roxy January 13, 2010 at 2:29 am #

would a full size UD 24/7 liner fit? it just shows a bunch of dfferent things inside, and i would love to have e/s and e/l in one place

  22. Phyrra January 13, 2010 at 9:40 pm #

    Hi Oh.Roxy,
I just went and checked, I can fit a UD eyeliner (full size) if it's in at an angle, like the top by the top right corner and the bottom by the bottom left corner. A halfsize one can fit without being at an angle.

I allready bought one, just did! I just fell in love with the concept behind it, I got the pomegranate color! And… well… I have to have something to fill it up with, so I stopped by a online CCO =) A girls need makeup. I love the review, it helped me make up my mind!

These look really nifty. I think I might *need* one.

I really like them! The ONLY time I’ve been unhappy was when I accidentally dropped a palette and had it chip the colors inside >.<
