High Voltage Cosmetics – A Review

Edit: August 3, 2011 Due to recent events that have been brought to my attention, I can no longer condone or support High Voltage Cosmetics.

This review is long overdue, but that’s ok. Since I first tried High Voltage cosmetics, their products have improved and changed. From their logo, to their labels, to their formulation to their jars, they’ve changed. They changed from clamshell jars to the industry standard 5 gram jars with twist off tops, which makes me happy.

Originally Jasmine, the owner of High Voltage, sent me some samples to try.

I liked them well enough that I made some purchases, but I hated the full size clamshell containers. So I gave Jasmine feedback on that. She took it into consideration and eventually changed her containers.

And I also purchased one of her new lip products and perfumes.

I love some of her aqua/teal shades, as they’re so gorgeous.

I used Cocktail Party on inner lid, Sour Candy on outer lid and crease, and Mean Streak on upper crease.

She’s also got some pretty greens, such as Paper Heart and Plaid Skirt.

I used Paper Heart on the inner v in this look. Paper Heart is a metallic khaki green with tons of sparkle.

Her lip gloss that I tried, Heart of Glass, is very opaque and gorgeous.

Heart of Glass is a hot pink magenta shade.

The Skin Candy that I tried is Sailor Girl. It’s described as an explosion of fruits opens the accent including Mango, Wild Strawberries and Ruby Red Grapefruit. Freesia Petals, Watery Muguet, and Linden Blossom merge into a background of warm amber musk and Tonka Bean.

I liked it and I wasn’t disappointed by it. It’s a nice scent.

Here are swatches of the colors that I have from High Voltage. The unlabeled shade is ‘What’s Your Pleasure?’ All colors were swatched over Aromaleigh Light Primer.

Shade Descriptions of Eye Shadows:
Cloud 9 – shimmery metallic Dark grey with strong silver sparkles
What’s Your Pleasure? – light orange tangerine (this is the unlabeled shade)
Moonshine – very light soft purple pink
Frost Bite – awesome icy blue
Alter Ego – fuschia red metallic
Cocktail Party -  bright shocking aqua
Lucy – Coral-orange shade
Sour Candy – shimmery aqua green
Plaid Skirt – light shimmery pastel green
Night Life – lagoon green with a black base
Tree Hugger – lime green with dimension
Mean Streak – dark metallic blue
Paper Heart – metallic khaki green with tons of sparkle
Mirror Mirror – mid-toned blue, multi dimensional
Pirate – dark metallic blue green with tons of shimmer and dimension
Addicted 2 Fashion – dark plum purple
Alchemy – a deep rich coppery golden tone

The eye shadows come in a variety of shades. They’ve got nice pigmentation and shimmer. I know she’s also added some matte shades but I haven’t tried those yet.

While the website could use a slight change to make it easier to search by shade, overall it’s pretty easy to navigate.

Pricing:
You can buy a sample lot of 20 eye shadows for $14.50.
Blushes are $4 each.
Skin Candy is $6.50.
Lip Candy is $5.00.
Shimmer eye shadows are $3.50 while samples are $1 each.
Matte eye shadows are $5.25 while samples are $1.25.
Eyeliner is $4 while samples are $1 each.
Eye shadow base is $5.50.
Brow Powders are $4.25 while samples are $1 each.
Cream eye shadow is $5.50.
Magic Dust is $5.25 while samples are $1.25.

The pricing is quite reasonable to me. Shipping for my most recent order was only $2, so I find shipping to be reasonable as well.

Would I buy from High Voltage again?
No.

I have total lemming for Plaid Skirt. It looks like just the kind of green I've been looking for- a mint that doesn't look white on the lid. Have you done any looks with it?

Hmmm…I've never tried them. I think I will have to check 'em out!

    What all did you order?

  5. Phyrra February 20, 2010 at 12:02 am #

I have not yet done any looks with it. And it definitely doesn't look white in the container or swatched.

Definitely try their Heart of Glass Lippy! Will look fantastic on you.

I haven't ordered from High Voltage yet (plenty to wear from a few other mineral makeup places), but their website puts me off a bit. It's a bit “Geocities” if you know what I mean. Otherwise, their products look nice. Maybe when I'm in the market again, I'll make an order.

uh ohhhh – another place to try! :) The colors look beautiful and those prices are reasonable! I am glad you said she changed the jars, I don't care for those claw shells either.

I'll be sure to mention a site update to Jasmine. She's pretty receptive to suggestions :)

Me too. Even when I try to carefully open them, I make a mess.

That lipgloss looks pretty! I've had a look at the website before, but as someone commented above, it felt and looked too Geocities and tacky to me D: Clamshell packaging is the spawn of Satan. I hate it SO MUCH for powders.

  16. Phyrra February 21, 2010 at 4:34 pm #

    I agree about the clamshell!

Do you know if HV stopped offering 20 samples for $14.50? I don't see it listed on their site. Thanks!

I just messaged Jasmine on Twitter to ask. Will let you know once I hear something ;)

Hello, I've been reading your blog for a lil while now and it was because of you that I found High Voltage. I placed an order with them for the 20 samples and two skin candy perfumes. I like the eye color samples but I LOVE the skin candy! I got “Rock on” which is my fave of the two and “Baby Baby”. They smell so amazing. I am such a snob when it comes to scents, I have always loved designer perfume, cheap scents give me a sinus headache and have since I was little so it was out of character to even order these. I'm so glad I did though,I'm in love! I plan on ordering more as soon as I can.

Yay I'm glad you like it!

I have only tried their eyeshadow base and it totally sucked! It's like it's made for creasing only.
