Spell Cosmetics – My Review

Spell Cosmetics is a company that I first tried a long time ago, and while originally I didn’t like their blush or foundation, I really liked their eye shadows. So I kept trying their eye shadows. Then I tried their lip products. I realized that I really like how they formulate their shadows, as it makes them super easy to blend and wear.

So I finally wanted to review them for you :)

Specialty Collections
One of the things that Spell will do is release small specialty collections of products, all meant to be worn together. These collections are well thought out. Everything coordinates and has special packaging. My favorite so far has been the Victorian Couture Collection.

I love the special packaging for the collection. The colors coordinate together beautifully. You can still purchase the shadows individually on the website. The shadows are Freudian Slip, Midnight Fire, and Nevermore.

Here’s the look I did with the collection.

Eye Shadows
Spell usually offers deals such as ‘Pick 3 Shadows for $13.99, or pick 10 for $50′, which gives you great deals on their shadows. Their shadows are normally $8 to $9 each, though as I’m writing this review they’re having their annual 40% off sale. As a Spell Girl member, I get 25% off of my order. So this means that in addition to their 40% off sale, I would get an additional 25% off.

Their jars are usually square with a round lid, and I believe they are oddly shaped 5 gram jars packed full of product.

The shadows themselves are really nice. I think that they’re a wax coated mica blend, which would account for them being buttery smooth to apply. They last all day, especially with a primer. They’re easy to blend and shade with. You can do some really lovely looks with the colors they have.

Here are some looks that I’ve done.

Antiquity, Bauble, Triple Strand

Purple Daze, Blacklight, Blueberry Fizz, Sublime

Me wearing Gemma’s Kiss lip creme.

Shock, Salt Water, Creme de Menthe

Silver Bells, Chilled, Shock

Moonlit, Blacklight, Embers

Moonspell Eye – Storm, Moonlit, Sublime, Nightshade

Neopolitan Eye – Mintallic, Alchemy, Camille, Aurora

Purple Daze, Salt Water, Blueberry Fizz, Blacklight

Scene, Ballroom Gown, Glass Slippers, Aubergine, Swindle, Solitaire

Here are swatches of most of my eye shadows from Spell.

The Hologlows.

The Jewel Thief collection.

Miscellanous mix.

Blush
The only blush that I have tried from Spell that I did not like was Zinfandel, and that’s because it was streaky on me. Every other blush I’ve tried has been fantastic. I have Royal Flush Blush, Neutral Soft Focus, Orchid and Goddess glow. Orchild is a lovely lavender blush. Neutral Soft Focus is great for contouring. Goddess Glow is an amazing highlighter. Royal Flush is a great natural looking blush on me. The blushes come in 10 gram sifters, and they actually seem huge to me.

You can purchase 3 blushes for $25, which right now during the 40% off sale would be $19.78. Originally they’re $10.99, but on sale for $6.59. If you want to pick up 3, I would recommend Neutral Soft Focus, Goddess Glow and Royal Flush Blush. The textures in these blushes is much better than in the Zinfandel I tried, which leads me to believe that the blushes were reformulated at some point.

Foundation
The foundation range is limited, as it only has 6 shades. The Porcelin matches me ok, but not perfectly. It does have a good texture and coverage, so I can easily see how it can become a favorite. You get 21 grams of foundation for $12.99.

The ingredients are: Sericite Mica, Titanium Dioxide, Zinc Oxide, Silk Mica: may contain: iron oxides, ultramarine blue.
I can’t complain about the ingredients at all.

Lip Products
A lot of my favorite lip products were discontinued, and I’m betting it’s because they didn’t sell well enough. Even the Vampire Amour is gone, from the Victorian Couture collection. However, they still have several great products.

First up, they have their Vamp Up Lip Plumper Gloss. I have two shades, Supernatural and Bordello. I honestly LOVE Bordello, it’s a great clear reddish shade on me. While I’m not sure how well it plumps, I think the clear and thick texture of the gloss does make my lips look bigger. So it’s a winner for me. The lip plumpers are normally $9.99 but during the 40% off sale they’re $5.99. And you can pick up 3 for $15.99 right now.

Next are the Lip Glosses. There’s a lot of shades I like. The Hologlow glosses in Moonlit and Blacklight, Haley’s Bite, and Nikkichik. there are several new shades that I haven’t tried yet, too. These are normally $7.99 but currently on sale for $4.79.

Last are Lip Pots of Color. I haven’t tried these yet. They’re currently $8.99 but on sale for $5.39.

Spell used to carry Lip Cremes, which I realy liked. I still have 3 of those: Gemma’s Kiss, Vampire Amour and A Lady Never Tells. They were sort of a liquid lipstick. If you applied them, then blotted, they looked pretty fantastic.

Spell sells primers, but I haven’t tried them.
They also sell skincare products, and I’ve tried a few, icnluding the body scrub and lotion, both of which are nice. The body scrub is $14.99 and the lotion is $10.

Costs
Spell’s shipping is free if you’re in the USA. If you’re in Canada, it’s $4 and if you’re international, it’s $7. This is some of the best shipping prices I’ve seen. I think it’s  nice that Spell strives to keep their shipping costs down.

Their products initially may seem high, but if you’re a Spell Girl/VIP member you always get 25% off, which makes things seem a lot more reasonable. They also run specials, like their current 40% off, which makes things even more affordable.

If you have been thinking about giving Spell Cosmetics a chance, now is a great time.

I’ve always experienced great customer service with Spell. I’ve been able to call and get a person on the phone. I’ve gotten my emails answered. And I always get my orders quickly.

So yes, I will continue to order from Spell. Elle, the lovely lady that runs it, is really fantastic.

I got exam results today- feel like I'm due a treat! But no money and they've put one of our bills up. However…. 40% off?! Tempting.

ah, you're tempting me! I was all ready to place my first order from Fyrinnae this morning, but the website was down. :( (could just be my computer, though.) I'm gonna have to check out Spell and maybe place a small order. :)

A well timed review! I was considering buying since they're having that sale, but wasn't too sure about it.

Yeah the 40% off is definitely tempting! I decided to pick up 2 lippies ;) I spent $10 total.

I think it's down for maintenance. It was last time I checked today.

I looooove Spell :) not sure why they discontinued their glosses, but they completely got rid of everything except the Vamp Up products. I ordered a couple of the new glosses the other day, and can't wait to see how they compare to the Vamp Up and old Obvious Gloss formula. I only have a few eyeshadows from them, but I adore the ones I do have. And I also like their foundation, though they tend to lean overwhelmingly neutral, so that could be a problem for some people. I dont like Sunstone blush, I thought in the swatch it would be a nice bronzer, but it's like a light pink glitter bomb :| I seriously need to email them about getting a SpellGirl discount, it would be so handy.

they all look lovely! what's the 'SpellGirl' thing? =)

Oooh, where's that first picture from on the site? It's so rare for any company (even indie companies) to use a plus sized model, and I think it's fucking awesome that Spell is. <3

  9. SillhouetteScreams March 5, 2010 at 8:38 am #

Oh and uhhh you might want to amend your post – Gemma was actually a guy (Elle's husband, I do believe) and he's not with them anymore =/

  10. SillhouetteScreams March 5, 2010 at 8:42 am #

Also: sorry if that last comment sounded mega bitchy, I probably should've added like 10 smiley faces or something XD I thought Gemma was a chick too for ages, and that people just said her name weird!

  11. @colormonochrome March 5, 2010 at 10:41 am #

totally agree about the plus sized model! it's really rare to see plus sized men or women in promotions unless the company is specifically cashing in on being 'inclusive'. *gag* also….she's gorgeous!

If you email them and ask to be a Spell Girl, they'll give you a 25% VIP discount applied to your account.

  13. phyrra March 5, 2010 at 5:13 pm #

The Vamp Up is a lip plumping formula. The Obvious Gloss was just a nice gloss. Hmm, I don't think I've tried Sunstone at all. Then again, pink glitter bombs sound like fun to me :) Yes, definitely email them to become a spell girl! VIP 25% off is fantastic.

If you go to just http://www.spellcosmetics.com they flip through several models. They're all gorgeous, but that one is my favorite. I just love the lips and the dress and the model looks so pretty.

  15. phyrra March 5, 2010 at 5:14 pm #

Yep, she's my favorite of the bunch :) If you go to just http://www.spellcosmetics.com they have several lovely models.

Oops! I feel like an idiot. Will do. Thanks for letting me know!

    LOL, no worries!

I've been trying to get reviews up for all the companies that I shop at often :) Glad it could be helpful!

I immediately wanted Filter Translucent Perfecting Powder as soon as it debuted on Spell's blog because I'm obsessed with finishing powders that promise blurring effects and oil absorption. Upon reading some of its ingredients, though, I talked myself out of it. I have oily acne-prone skin so I don't want to risk the vitamin E and jojoba clogging my pores. I also abhor patchouli (even though I'm fine with orange, eucalyptus, and ylang ylang). I'd be curious to hear your experience with Filter if you ever try it!

  20. Phyrra March 10, 2010 at 10:34 pm #

I haven't yet tried it, but if I do, I will review it. I also dislike patchouli, so I feel you on that!

I think my favorite finishing powder is Aromaleigh's Ultra Resolution Finishing Powder.
