Mascara Musings

I’ve wanted to do a comparison of the mascaras that I’d been wearing lately. My favorite of all of them is the Covergirl LashBlast Luxe Mascara in Black Platinum (though I want to try the LashBlast Fusion). Tell me, which of these do you think looks like it gives the longest, fullest lashes? I know not every mascara works for every person, since all of us have different lashes, but I’d love to hear your thoughts!

Covergirl LashBlast Luxe Mascara in Black Platinum (with L’Oreal Double Extend Primer)

L’Oreal Double Extend Mascara in Blackest Black (with L’Oreal Double Extend Primer)

L’Oreal Double Extend Primer + Hard Candy Curl Up & Die Black Out Mascara + Nyx Doll Eye Volumzing Mascara in Extreme Black

Nyx Doll Eye Volumizing Mascara in Extreme Black (with L’Oreal Double Extend Primer)

Bare Escentuals Magic Wand Brushless Mascara in Black (with Aromaleigh Lash Primer)

MAC Zoom Lash Mascara in Zoom Black (with Aromaleigh Lash Primer)

Hard Candy Curl Up & Die Mascara with Hard Candy Ginormous Lashes (wih L’Oreal Double Extend Primer)

Hard Candy Ginormous Lashes in Black Out (with L’Oreal Double Extend Primer)

I couldn’t find a recent picture of me with Benefit’s BadGal Lash mascara so I need to try and add that one in, as well as MAC’s Pro Lash. Though you can see just how weak MAC’s Zoom Lash was on me.

I think the Nyx Doll Eye Volumizing Mascara is pretty good on me, too. And the Bare Escentauls Magic Wand Brushless Mascara was a favorite of mine for quite a while.

Personally when it comes to mascara, I want volumizing, as I always use a primer for length. I also prefer a larger brush as it’s easier for me to coat my lashes with a larger brush.

Which do you think looks the best?
Which do you prefer?
If you use another brand of mascara, what is it?
Do you have a holy grail mascara?

The Nyx and Covergirl Lashblast look best on you to me. Didn't seem to clump, lots of volume. I stick with Maybeline's Great Lash BIG in the pink and green package. I haven't come across *any* other mascara that works better for me.

  2. Stef April 13, 2010 at 9:14 pm #

I love the length and separation in the first pic with the CG mascara but I think the NYX Doll Eye is great on you too! My HG mascaras are Diorshow (original formula) and Cover Girl Lashblast, with Lancome Hypnose coming a close third.

  3. Katrina April 13, 2010 at 9:31 pm #

I'm gonna vote for the CG lashblast. It's my fav these days too (the non-waterproof one). And it's funny, I think the MAC does the least (and it's probably the most $$).

  4. Jaimi April 13, 2010 at 9:58 pm #

I'm between the CG, the Nyx Doll Eye, and the Hard Candy Ginormous Lashes. I'm impressed (in a bad way) with how little the MAC one does!

  5. Phyrra April 13, 2010 at 10:00 pm #

I'll have to check out the Great Lash. I think that's the one classic one right? The pink and green?

  6. Phyrra April 13, 2010 at 10:01 pm #

Thank you! Yeah I keep thinking the CG brush and formula work really well. The first time I used the Doll Eye it was a hot mess, but I think I've gotten better at using it. Which LashBlast formula is your favorite?

  7. Phyrra April 13, 2010 at 10:04 pm #

MAC mascara is usually about $13 a bottle, while the LashBlast Luxe is like $8 I think? Yeah I don't really buy waterproof mascara anymore. I have this waterproofer stuff from Urban Decay that can make any mascara waterproof, so if I need it, I have it :)

  8. Phyrra April 13, 2010 at 10:04 pm #

Hehe! I'll have to try the Ginormous again.

  9. Jezi April 13, 2010 at 10:27 pm #

I have a weird love for mascaras that have a learning curve attached to them. My favorite drugstore one is the waterproof Pulse Perfection. The vibration honestly works in helping the bristles comb through my lashes, and lengthens pretty well. My holy grail mascara is MAC Plushlash, which I hated at first, but once I got the hang of the application, which tends to do very well when you twirl the brush a certain way, it makes for amazing lashes.

I vote for the CG lashblast. I use it everyday myself and have not found anything I like as much. I use the original one, not the luxe. I think the ginormous hard candy one looks really good too. A while back I bought Prestige “my biggest lashes” and absolutely loved it but it dried out super fast…. ended up coming back to the lashblast :)

My vote would be either the Hard Candy Ginormous Lashes in Black Out (with L'Oreal Double Extend Primer) or the LashBlast. So do I account for 2 votes? =D All the mascara I've been using for the past 4-5 years are from Avon. Whenever they go on sale (2 for 7.99, buy one get one) I usually stock up on 2-4 mascaras. I used to use featherlash (don't remember which brand that is) or GreatLash or Almay's mascaras, but when I became an Avon rep, i fell in love with their mascaras. The two I'm switching from now is the Super Curl-acious mascara and Astonishing Lengths (this one I use when I don't feel like curling my lashes). They're pretty cheap (around $8 not on sale), and they work awesome!

Heh, I finally beat you to a product. :P I picked up the LashBlastfusion last week when I snagged a new Eco Tools blush brush. All in all, the difference between the regular LashBlast and the LBfusion is pretty negligible for me. I wear UD's mascara primer and have pretty long lashes anyway, so it may have been a case of gilding the lilly. To me LBfusion's formula feels a little more stiff than the regular LashBlast, so if I had to get right down and pick a favorite, classic LashBlast is going to be it.

I have actually only tried 2 mascaras in my life! The first was Avon Perfect Wear (?)… the waterproof one. Then after having one of my favourite beauty bloggers rave about Lancome L'Extreme (the waterproof version) I caved and got it cheap on eBay. That with an eyelash curler beforehand and POW. I've been using that combo for a good 6 months and haven't looked back. It's literally the only mainstream-branded beauty item I use! I would never ever pay full-price for it though, it's about $55. On eBay it's $14-24 which I'm ok with.

  14. Julissa April 13, 2010 at 11:07 pm #

Ohhh, Covergirl LashBlast looks good. I need new mascara. I think I'll try that one. :D

  15. T, the bee April 13, 2010 at 11:17 pm #

Have you tried any “mineral” mascaras, natural mascaras, and etc? I really try to avoid too much stuff that has a bunch of preservatives… although, many of those you listed are not rated too poorly on the skin deep cosmetics database (www.skindeep.com),” target=”_blank”> Reply

  • Runaround Sous April 13, 2010 at 11:40 pm #

I love LashBlast Luxe! But I noticed that the bottle of Luxe version went all clumpy on me faster that my LashBlast Length (which I bought at the same time). Could be that one just got drier faster, or that I got an odd bottle. I like the volume of my lashes better in Luxe than in Length. I want to try Fusion! I think you might enjoy the colored versions of Luxe, too.

  • EvilAngel April 14, 2010 at 12:40 am #

I think the first and the last look the best.

  • Elizabeth April 14, 2010 at 2:48 am #

I like the first picture, the 5th picture looks as lush but more natural so it's my first choice, and the last picture is a good mascara too. IMHO. :P I'm a fan of Dior Show, but I use the orange CoverGirl one lately. I picked up a cheap set of 4 at Costco and with the hubby sort of out of work I gotta watch my spending…a little

  • nkaneko April 14, 2010 at 3:16 am #

Your lashes look longest to me in the first picture and fullest in the last. Personally, I love the Loreal because it is relatively inexpensive (on sale and/or with a coupon), it makes my lashes look great, and it washes off so easily (no rubbing or harsh removers to irritate my eyes). I would also like to try out some other “tube” mascaras. When you use the Loreal primer with a “regular” mascara, is removal the same as with the Loreal mascara?

  • Retrodiva April 14, 2010 at 3:40 am #

Normally I always vote for L'Oreal when it comes to drugstore mascaras, but I'm really digging the NYX on you. Which means, of course, I'm going t have to go and buy a tube and try for myself.

  • Phyrra April 14, 2010 at 3:42 am #

I've never heard of Pulse Perfection, who makes it?

  • Phyrra April 14, 2010 at 3:42 am #

Eww, I hate it when mascara dries out fast.

  • Phyrra April 14, 2010 at 3:43 am #

I'll have to keep an eye out for the Avon mascaras! I've liked some of the Avon products (and you probably know I love some of the mark stuff :> )

  • Phyrra April 14, 2010 at 3:44 am #

Yay glad to hear you like ti though :>

  • Phyrra April 14, 2010 at 3:44 am #

Yeah that's a great deal on ebay!

  • Phyrra April 14, 2010 at 3:44 am #

Yeah I really like the LashBlast luxe :)

  • Phyrra April 14, 2010 at 3:45 am #

I don't think I've tried the only mineral ones. I'm not sure if the Bare Escentuals Magic Wand Brushless mascara counts as a mineral or not. I'm usually picky about mascaras because so many will just irritate my eyes.

  • Phyrra April 14, 2010 at 3:46 am #

Oooh weird! mine hasn't gone dry yet :> I was eyeing the colored versions when I bought the luxe but I wanted to wait and see if I liked it. I do love my colored mascara!

  • Phyrra April 14, 2010 at 3:46 am #

Yay thanks :) What do you wear?

  • Phyrra April 14, 2010 at 3:47 am #

That sounds like a great deal! I think I just find the Hard Candy Ginormous very … wet, to work with.

  • Phyrra April 14, 2010 at 3:47 am #

The primer doesn't tube on me. I tend to find the tube mascara really hard to work with. I don't know if it's because I suck at applying it or what. I use the nyx eye and lip makeup remover which I love.

  • Phyrra April 14, 2010 at 3:48 am #

Hehe, let me know what you think :)

  • T, the Bee April 14, 2010 at 6:58 am #

I totally hear ya. I am sensitive as well as having weird cosmetics requirements. Of the (“mineral”, natural, etc) mascaras I've tried I liked 100% Pure (smells like blueberries!) the best and Erzuli, after that (just in case you were interested). ^_^ Of the pictures you have posted… I got it narrowed down to the hard candies, but I couldn't get down to just one. Although, I will say, it appears as though your lashes are pretty darned long and thick, regardless.

  • Mika_chan April 14, 2010 at 11:08 am #

I'm shocked that CG Lash Blast is one of the best ones here. I HATED it, it was so crumbly. Maybe I got a bad bottle…..

  • Silhouettex April 14, 2010 at 11:36 am #

I think Great Lash BIG is different from regular Great Lash :)

  • Silhouettex April 14, 2010 at 11:38 am #

I think the NYX Doll Eye One looks the best, it looks less spiky :) I really liked the Covergirl Lash Blast WP (original….I think its now called volume?) and I'm also liking Avon Supershock, but that gives more of a natural effect, despite the name haha

  • @whimsybeading April 14, 2010 at 2:41 pm #

Also, I've got Hard Candy's Curl up and Dye in purple. I don't care for it much. The brushes are the old school long, narrow brushes that just don't work all that well for me – I usually end up stabbing myself in the eye.

  • Jezi April 14, 2010 at 2:59 pm #

Maybelline, It's the Define a Lash wand, but it vibrates by push of a button. I've tested it with and without the vibration on, and I can see a difference in application and length.

  • RaeRae April 14, 2010 at 4:56 pm #

Love NYX Doll Eye on you. I have to second the Avon mascaras- I had the curling one with the spiral brush (I know, helpful right? But it's the double helix brush, you'll know it when you see it…) and I loved it, I would definitely go back to it but at the moment I have no Avon lady and I hate paying postage on something that I could get postage-free from a representative. Also I just love going through the catalogue. I am also a huge fan of the Body Shop's Divide and Multiply. I got it in a gift set and it makes my lashes look gorgeously defined. I always use my camera phone for my blog, though, so people can't tell, but it's really good. I've just bought their new Big and Curvy mascara because my Divide and Multiplys are going gloopy. I use Bad Gal Lash as well and really like it- but not so much the price point. I got my mini free with a magazine lol! Ooo and anything with a comb rather than a brush is fab on my lashes- Rimmel Glam Eyes or LashMaxxx are good. Long comment… sorry :P

Be careful about using the eyelash serum Brooke Shields models , Read the March 2010 issue of Prevention magazine, or go to Prevention.com to read the warngings. Can csuse permanent eye damge, not to mention change your blue/green/grey eyeclour permanetly to dark, but potential PERMANENT eye damge would be a far bigger worry.

  • Teaspoon April 14, 2010 at 9:24 pm #

I like the Nyx, Luxe, and Hard Candy ones on you. I used to love Lash Blast, but I sorta moved onto Great Lash (“blackest black,” with the small brush) and most recently I've been playing around with Colossal (the darkest black available), the one in the hideous yellow tube. Great Lash and Colossal are both only about five dollars at Walmart or RiteAid, and depending on how much time I'm actually willing to spend coating my lashes, they both give me a borderline false-lash effect. My Great Lash is blacker than the Colossal, which is more of a very dark gray, but I get more length with Colossal, and Colossal multiplies my lashes easily. I'm probably going to try Great Lash BIG soon. The only beef I have with Colossal, other than the hideous yellow tube, is that it makes my eyes sting for a little while after application. I have extremely sensitive eyes though… they water or sting under most conditions.

  • Kawaiiferreto April 14, 2010 at 11:52 pm #

I like the Lashblast Luxe the most on you, but, honestly, they all look pretty great. My favorite is still Blinc mascara, mostly because it's the only one I can wear. haha. I have it in brown black? or whatever the dark brown color is called. I want to try their purple one though, to see if it gives as nice of an effect as Benefit BadGal Plum (which was awesome minus the itchy burning watery eyes thing!)

  • Phyrra April 15, 2010 at 2:39 am #

    Good to know :)

  • Phyrra April 15, 2010 at 2:39 am #

I'll have to look for it to be on sale :)

  • Phyrra April 15, 2010 at 2:40 am #

I know a LOT of people didn't like the Hard Candies. the Curl up and Die seemed to curl on me in the purple, but the black, not as much. It's like sometimes their texture is too wet. And really I think it's the lash primer. Look at how sad my lashes look with the MAC on.

  • Phyrra April 15, 2010 at 2:41 am #

I'll try the Doll Eye tomorrow with my good primer :)

  • Phyrra April 15, 2010 at 2:41 am #

See that one worked well for me, but the black worked less so. It's so weird how some mascaras work for some lashes and not for others.

  • Phyrra April 15, 2010 at 2:42 am #

I think I have one of the Body Shop's mascaras, I'll have to dig it out to try, too. And yeah, I have no Avon Lady either :P

  • Phyrra April 15, 2010 at 2:43 am #

I really love the big brush from the LashBlast Luxe (and Benefit's BadGal). I feel like big brushes work best for me. Eek, if your eyes are stinging, that's not good!

  • Phyrra April 15, 2010 at 2:43 am #

I can't get the tubes to work well on me. No idea why. I always feel like they look like crap.

  • @whimsybeading April 16, 2010 at 2:54 pm #

Isn't it funny that we always end up buying the same things? I tried the Hard Candy regular mascara in the teal green and really liked it, but I think to get the best look, I'm going to have to go get me some Big Fatty Flipside.

  • Phyrra April 16, 2010 at 11:29 pm #

We have good taste :) The UD colored mascaras are pretty good.

  • Sara@ eye shadow makeup December 9, 2010 at 7:59 pm #

I think they all look about the same length, but theNyx Doll Eye Volumizing Mascara in Extreme Black probably makes them look fuller!

    • Phyrra December 11, 2010 at 1:14 am #

I actually feel like I get the best results now with Hard Candy 1000 Lashes Primer and Flirt! It Curls Mascara
