Shiro Cosmetics – Initial Thoughts

Photobucket

Recently I purchased from Shiro Cosmetics because my friend  suggested I check them out due to the fact that I’m a geek, and  the colors are all named for Pokemon monsters. The collection is officially called the Super Effective Collection. Shiro Cosmetics is a very new company. In fact, they only went llive on April 30, 2010!

Before I ordered,  I checked the FAQ and saw this:
“I don’t sell straight mica and I don’t use premade bases; all  formulations are uniquely mine. In fact, the base I use for each  individual shadow is unique since different pigments have varying  properties. A favorite ingredient of mine, included in all my  formulations, is carnauba wax. It helps the pigment adhere  smoothly and blend beautifully while retaining its rich color -  and it’s vegan, too!”

This actually made me quite excited to try the shadows, because I  love it when a company tells you that they don’t repackage.

All of the eye shadows currently offered are vegan, which is good  in my book!

While I didn’t play Pokemon myself (I played Monster Rancher,  which I considered to be tremendous fun!) I did know about several  of the Pokemon monsters, including Pikachu, Mew and MewTwo.

You can see the cute red bad they arrived in, nicely packaged.

Shadow Textures:
My initial thoughts after swatching the shadows and playing around with them on my skin are that I really like the texture of these shadows. Most of these seem to  have a satin finish, and a few are peppered with micro-glitter. I didn’t notice any fall out when swatching  them. The colors are pretty.

Pricing is as follows:
$5.00 – full size (5 gram jar, 1.8 to 2 grams of product), $3.00 mini size (3 gram jar, 1 gram product) , $1.00 – sample (1/4 tsp)

Official Shade Descriptions:
Squirtle – Bright, clear, shimmery pool blue.
Pikachu – vivid, opaque, shimmering yellow with eye-safe red  glitter sparks.
Mew – cheerful, bright strawberry-bubblegum pink with a slight  peachy tone.
Mewtwo – Sheer, shimmery, medium purple with blue tones.
Bulbasaur – Bright, opaque, shimmering grassy green with a hint  of a gold undertone.
Acid – Vivid, opaque, shimmery yellow-green with golden  undertones and just a touch of darker green eye-safe glitter.
Charmander – Soft yet bright shimmery orange, like a candle’s  flame, with yellow undertones and just a hint of gold.
Zubat – Dusky, shimmery, semi-sheer blue with a violet tinge.
Vulpix – Gorgeous shimmering coppery red-brown, soft but intense  – kind of like hugging a Vulpix, I imagine.
Articuno – Pale, powdery silver-blue with plenty of shimmer and  sparkle.
Hyper Beam – sparkly opaque black, absolutely loaded with silver  eye-safe glitter.
S.S. Anne – Lovely, shimmery, subtle yet rich golden brown with a  peachy-copper tinge – appropriate for all ages and occasions,  universally flattering, and pretty much just gorgeous.
Team Rocket – Opaque, shimmery red-toned purple, kind of a cross  between the Team Rocket uniform and Jessie’s hair.
Brock the Rock – Dark, rich, shimmery chocolate brown with red  tones.

This picture is really close to how the color looks to me. It’s a very blued silver.

Here are the colors swatched next to some colors that I feel look similar.

Swatch Order (with my commentary):
Squirtle – bright and beautiful aqua! This is one of my favorite colors, as always.
Lance – very pretty gold threaded purple
Zubat – really lovely dusky purple/blue
Team Rocket – red-based purple
MewTwo – silvery purple, sort of like the color of the skin of a  black plum
Mew – pink-coral shade
Charmander – metallic light orange
Pikachu – vivid yellow with red micro glitter. I should add that any time I hear the name Pikachu I am reminded of Something Positive‘s character Aubrey.
Acid – really cute yellowed green. Not as intense as Aromaleigh Estranged or Sugarpill Absinthe, but definitely cousins.
Bulbasaur – crayon green
S. S. Anne – multidimensional pretty golden brown. Really liked  this, reminded me of UD’s YDK.
Vulpix – reddish brown
Brock the Rock – Reminded me of MAC Majestic, really pretty.
Hyper Beam – reminded me of UD Oil Slick
Articuno – silvery-blue with silver glitter

Colors I’m looking forward to playing with:
Squirtle, Zubat, Pikachu, Acid, S.S. Anne, Brock the Rock, Mew & MewTwo.

All colors were swatched on Aromaleigh Light Primer.

I’ll be doing a more extensive review after I’m able to wear the shadows a bit.

Have you heard of Shiro Cosmetics?

Yep, I got that sample pack, too. I AM a Pokemon fan, so that's what made me get them, but they're really nice shadows, too! I like Vulpix and S.S. Anne so far. ^_^

    • Kawaiiferreto

O.M.G. I already have a color similar to it, but I NEED PIKACHU!!! And Squirtle. Now if they would just make a Meowth shade I would love them for forever. =D

    • Runaround Sous

      Wow… Pok

    • Phyrra

Dave was obsessed with Pokemon. He actually got excited to see makeup named after the monsters! S.S. Anne does look really nice! I'm actually thinking it'll make a good crease color.

    • Phyrra

Squirtle is really gorgeous, but you know me and aquas. You should email her and ask about a Meowth shade. She takes requests!

    • Phyrra

That's awesome for you to do as a mum!

    • Nic

That's too funny, I found Shiro by accident on etsy the other day, and after looking at her etsy/website/blog, I was planning to order samples tomorrow. I'll let you know what I think of them!

    • Pixiealamode

I watched the show Monster Ranchers when I was younger. I still have a Mochi figurer around the house. XD I love Pokemon oh man. I have a friend who isn't very intrested in make-up but if she heard about these she would go crazy and buy them all. Thank you for putting out this new brand!!!

    • KittenMittens

SS Anne looks pretty and it's weird cuz I no likey the browns, that must mean I have to make an order soon :D

    • Ms. Whimsy Beading

I want S.S. Anne and Arcticuno. I sent the links to all my gamer girl friends when I sent it to you. I'm all for spreading the indie love, especially when someone is as nice as Caitlin has been so far.

    • shirocosmetics

Thank you so much for the review, Phyrra!! I was actually planning on asking you to do a review, but you ordered before I could, which I got really excited about. ^_^ I'm really happy you enjoyed the colors! Do you have any suggestions based on what you've seen so far? And would it be alright for me to link to this from the “Reviews” page of my website? Thanks again! :D

    • shirocosmetics

I could do a Meowth shade for you! ^_^ Kind of gold-toned cream?

    • Mika_chan

Dang you wasted no time getting these! Lol I saw these too and thought it was awesome that they're pokemon related, and even showed them to David. I hadn't ordered yet though, because I still didn't know when I was leaving for California. I think they need one named “Jigglypuff”.

    • Kim

Oh my god, I'm going to get pulled right in because I'd love to have an eyeshadow named “Pikachu”. Too bad they do have a rockin' purple named “Rattata” or “Venonat”, I'd be all over that too.

    • shatteredshards

I have seen them, and, unfortunately, too many of the colors just looked too familiar. Your swatches aren't killing my gut feeling, either. :\

    • Jade

Phyrra, you are made of win, I swear! I was looking at this place the other day and put them at the top of my 'order from next' list. Now I know for sure I'm not going to be throwing my money at someone unreliable (no offense intended, Shiro, you know how it's been recently in the MMU world!) As soon as my Meow and Sassy orders get here I'm getting the 5 mini jars deal… I already know which ones I want :)

    • Angela

OMFG im going to check these guys out right now! i looove pokemon (sad but true i still have all of my 500+ trading cards and nintendo games) hahah thanks for this little review x

    • Phyrra

Sounds good :) She shipped them out fast.

    • Phyrra

You're quite welcome! I was such a Monster Rancher addict! I even bought special cds to get special monsters!

    • Phyrra

      It's a golden brown, maybe that's why? :)

    • Phyrra

I'm so glad you shared it with me! Thank you!

    • Phyrra

Hi there! You're more than welcome to link to this review :) I'm a gamer girl at heart (and I work in game development), so I was excited to see the Pokemon collection. I really like the satiny finish on your shadows. After I've worn them, I'll be able to give you better feedback on that. So far I've only swatched them.

    • Phyrra

Definitely email the company owner and suggest it!

    • Phyrra

I've gotta go look those up :)

    • Phyrra

I'm pretty sure they're not repackaged. I do have a bunch of the TKB straight micas to compare against. These shadows have nice bases and are pretty.

    • Phyrra

      Oooh which do you want?

    • Phyrra

      You're quite welcome!

    • shirocosmetics

Hello! Sorry to hear that, but I totally understand, too. I'd offer to do comparison swatches for you, but I guess I wouldn't be considered the most credible source, so I'm hoping Phyrra will do some comparisons in her full review. Meanwhile, I'd definitely be willing to answer any questions or concerns! You can reach me at [email protected] . :)

    • shatteredshards

They do look pretty, but a number of those look very much like Pop! colors with enough base to fade 'em a bit. Of course, that's just what I see from the photos, I could be wrong.

    • WendyD

*Squeals!* I LOVE Pokemon! All the shades are perfectly named, for a few of them I was able to guess the name before reading it :D SS Anne is GORGEOUS.

    • Mika_chan

Omg I don't know why I NEVER think of that. She responded so quickly, and she's working on that color tonight :)

    • shirocosmetics

Thank you! I'll look forward to the more complete review. :) What sorts of games do you develop? That sounds like a really great job…

    • shirocosmetics

“(no offense intended, Shiro, you know how it's been recently in the MMU world!)” None taken, of course! Lately I'll be flipping through shadows on Etsy and I'm a bit ashamed at how often I'll see a color and go “That's gotta be TKB _______.” It's just the natural assumption now, which is kind of sad, really… But I'll look forward to your order! :D I have to try Meow sometime, speaking of which.

    • Taryn

Wow! This is awesome. I have loved Pokemon since playing it in 1999 for the first time. I still buy the new releases. Personally I'd love a shade named after a monster that was a particular thorn in my side – Sudowoodo. He looked *so* innocent and I figured fire would take him out easily. Come to find out that son of a gun's a rock. Should have known with Sudo in the name. He almost cost me a good portion of my game during a battle in Colosseum.

    • KittenMittens

A very dreamy golden brown! :D

    • Cracked_Oblivion

Thank you so much for the lovely swatches! I am a little obsessed with Pikachu :) I will definitely be purchasing from Shiro soon!

    • Becca

OMG Pokemom makeups!! *drools* Needs moar mudkips! ;) But the inclusion of Charmander makes me happy; he's my all-time favorite <3

    • Jade

Hehe, Zubat, Lance the Dragon Trainer, Vulpix, Pikachu and Brock the Rock :)

    • Jade

Etsy is such a minefield O.o it's great to have honest, experienced reviewers like Grey and Phyrra to help out makeup noobs like me. I look forward to my order too! :) found your blog btw, I have bookmarked it.

    • Phyrra

I wore it today :) I'll post pix later and you can tell me if you like or dislike.

    • Phyrra

Wearing both today! So glad you linked me!

    • Phyrra

      Yay glad you like!

    • Phyrra

      They're all so cute!

    • Phyrra

We try to do our best :)

    • shirocosmetics

Holy cow. Like… Sudo. Pseudo. I didn't notice until you posted. My mind has just been blown. O_O Sudowoodo is now on my list of things to make! :D

    • Silhouettex

OMG I love Pokemon :D WANT

    • BLIX

I've never heard of them but the colours look really nice. :-) Whatcha up to this weekend? Hope you and the boys are doing well.

    • @booopers

I just ordered the whole sample set. I love Pokemon, so I'm super excited to try this collection!

    • @newtypegirlie

I also just ordered the sample set! I'm so excited to play with them. Shiro Cosmetics, I choose you!

    • Phyrra

I'll be swatching the colors next to the straight pops soon, However, I'm pretty that while some of the colors may have some of the TKB Pops for ingredients, they've also got 3 to 4 other colors mixed in with them, plus a base, plus wax, etc. I had to order the last few pops I didn't have, so once they get here, I'll be able to do that.

    • Phyrra

We've got company over. It's been good except for me eating something that disagreed with my system and me being ill until 5am, retching. Yeah, I could totally do without that ;P I'm just finally able to get soup and bread down. How's your weekend?

    • Phyrra

      Hehe yay!

    • Phyrra

      I think you'll be pleased :)

    • Phyrra

      Hehe, awesome!

    • shatteredshards

Carnauba wax comes in a premixed base – I have some from TKB, and, to my knowledge, Grey uses the same stuff in her creations. Also, to my knowledge, it's not the easiest to use in powdered makeups otherwise, because of the chip/pellet form it comes in when sold as a single ingredient. I dunno. I'm just not wowed here, it seems like stuff I've already seen.

    • shirocosmetics

Dropping in to clarify a bit: I consider the wax part of the base. I do use the C-SMAX from TKB, which is mica coated in carnauba wax, but I blend that with titanium dioxide and occasionally, depending on what I'm working with, additions like zinc oxide, magnesium myristrate, or silica. So it's a pre-mixed base within a base, I guess. I wanted to use the wax because of the finish it gives, and I thought the best way was to use the C-SMAX. As for the colors themselves, I do get what you're saying about them not being especially unique. All of my colors have at least 3 unique colorants in them, but as you said, several are at least somewhat based on the Pop! colors. They're noticeably different when swatched side by side, though, and not just because of the inclusion of the base. That said, most of them are in fact fairly basic – I'm attempting to create higher levels of complexity as I learn more about how the colorants interact, but these 15 colors are my first attempts. I appreciate your feedback, and I'm constantly working on new colors, so maybe sometime you'll find something that catches your eye. :)

    • Belinda

A makeup collection named after Pokemon? Oh man oh man that's awesome. Looks like I'm going to have to CATCH 'EM ALL with these colors. :D

    • Belinda

Ooh, if you're taking suggestions I have one! A white with gold sparkle called Arceus. Though if you're sticking to Gen 1-themed names, that might not work out. Heh.

    • shirocosmetics

I think TKB's Hilite Gold is pretty much exactly what you're looking for, actually. Hmmmm. I'll put it on the Potential list and think about what I could do to change it up. ^_^

    • Phyrra

      Haha, which are your fav?

    • Belinda

I think my top 3 are Hyper Beam, Articuno, and Acid.

    • Phyrra

      Cool :)

    • Rhianna

Out of curiousity, would you say that S.S. Anne is a more affordable alternative to Sugarpill’s Goldilux? In the picture, they look pretty similar…maybe you could swatch them together? Because $12.00 a pop is really expensive on my budget, so if S.S. Anne matches it I will be very happy.

      • Phyrra

        Hi there!
No, Goldilux is VERY unique, and a molten gold color.

S.S. Anne, while pretty, is a golden brown type shade.

        • Rhianna

Ok, thanks! Looks like now I’m going to have to get both, because they both look far too lovely to pass up!

        • Rhianna

I ordered the sample set and it came last week. While I was playing with the colours, I was thinking “wow, these are aso much more amazing in person!”. I’ve really been enjoying playing with them. Out of curiosity, do you think you could do a Beatles-inspired look with these colours so I could get some idea of how to do one for myself? I really like the song Lucy in the Sky With Diamonds, so I wanted a look like a kaleidoscope, but I have no idea how to acheive this.

          • Phyrra

I can try and come up with something :)
