e.l.f. Basic Brown – Swatches

Recently I won an e.l.f. Basic Brown Get the Look set. I swatched the shades for you. The colors are supposed to be Cream, Copper and Bark. However to me it looks more like a cream, brown and brown. Additionally the two brown shades were shattered in the pots and pretty messy, which I hadn’t expected. I’d heard that e.l.f. shadows were soft and this seems to reinforce that.

I should explain that I tried e.l.f. several years ago, at the recommendation of a friend of mine. The brightening eye shadow quads drove me nuts because they seemed to lack pigmentation, or the colors all looked the same on the skin. I did like one of the facial whips, Pink Lemonade, but again, the colors were all really close to one another on me, so I couldn’t really tell them apart. I did like the plumping lip gloss in Ruby Kiss, but the rest of the colors I tried not so much. I liked the theory behind e.l.f. – affordable makeup for everyone, but most of the products I just couldn’t get to work for me or I didn’t like.

Anyway, the basic brown set comes with three eye shadows: Cream, Copper and Bark. In the pots, Copper and Bark look nearly identical and they look brown. I wouldn’t say Copper looks copper at all! Cream is a really nice golden yellow cream shimmer shade. Copper is a shimmery mid-tone brown shade with maybe a hint of copper if you’re feeling generous. Bark is a deeper brown with maybe a glint of shimmer.  The no-flash picture is more accurate in how close the two browns look. I have no idea why the colors look so wonky in the flash picture.

Anyway, while the texture is good on the Cream color, I don’t like the texture on the other two. If you put Copper on the lid and Bark in the crease, you’ll have a very subtle difference between your lid and crease, which I do think a lot of people will like. I think again, e.l.f. is hit and miss with its quality.

I should also add that while their original brush line went scratchy on me really fast, their Studio line brushes were nice. I have a couple of the e.l.f. C brushes that I really like.

Do you like e.l.f.? If so, what are your favorite products?

I reallllly like the ELF eyebrow duo thing, the waxy ones. I prefer those over everything else. I have really dark hair and I LOVE a strong brow, so even if I’m not doing makeup (cause I’m running late) I always do my brows.

I know I saw some of the e.l.f. line at Target, so I may go peruse that to look for the eyebrow duo :)

The eyebrow duo is available at Target. I’ve recently tried some of their products and they’re pretty decent for the price. I really like the hypershine gloss, it wasn’t sticky at all like most glosses are.

I agree with the hit or miss on elf products. But I have recently bought some of their brushes and have been really impressed with them.

The black line of brushes has been good for me, while the white line turned scratchy.

I like the E.L.F. Facial Whips for takealong makeup, (I like Spotlight a lot – quick eye brightener!) and I like their mineral shadows and liquid shadows. Not so fond of the pressed shadows though. Like you, I had a big problem with their pigmentation and application.

I haven’t tried their mineral line or their liquid shadow.

It always annoys me when I see what looks like cool colors in the pan and those colors just don’t translate to nice on the skin.

I have tried tons of the ELF stuff.
I hated the eyeshadow quads too! They are dusty and full of chunky glitter.
I actually love the brushes, even the white handle ones. The Studio ones, The C shaped ones- they are great for packing on pigment.

I also use the little concealer brush on my nails, as I use a lotion on the cuticles and surrounding area so I dont get paint on my skin.

Oh and the eyeliner brush is good for foiling pigments.

I do love the Transformation Eyeshadows, they are super bright and pigmented on NYX blackbean.

I think the Studio Line Eyeshadow in Raspberry Truffle is an amazing color.

But please stay away from the lip treatments- they taste and smell like Mr Clean for the bathroom!!!
ELF is def. a hit or miss place.

That’s a great idea for the concealer brush!
