Flat Iron Suggestions?

I’m back to having the same problem I had before with my flat irons. None of them have an automatic shut off feature that after they’re left on for a half hour or an hour, they shut off automatically. I need to find one that will automatically shut off, lest I have to run home to make sure I turned it off.

I’m asking you, please help me :)

Can you suggest flat irons that have an automatic turn off feature?

How about getting something that works as a timer in the plug socket.

I’m pretty sure we have them here in Sweden, not sure about the USA

      • Phyrra

That’s a good idea! I’ll have to look into that. I think I used to have something like that for a light to turn it on and off during certain hours of the night.

I second this suggestion! You can save some money by getting an auto shut-off timer instead of popping for a new flat iron. You should be able to get them at Lowe’s or Home Depot, probably even Wal-Mart, in the lighting section pretty cheap :)

        • Phyrra

I weighed the pros and cons and decided against this, but only because I don’t always use the flat iron at the same time every day, I just use it before I leave (be it on a saturday or a monday), so having something that will shut off in a half hour is key.

I know how you feel. I’ve become really obsessive about checking mine before I leave the house. Most of the time I check it several times before I leave. One with an automatic shut off would be awesome, I hope someone has a suggestion.

      • Phyrra

I try to always remember to pull the plug out. But I got to the office at 8:50 am this morning. Then around 10:30 went shit, did I unplug it? Had to run home, yes it was unplugged, and come back to work.

I have an Ion One Stroke and as many times as I’ve used it, I don’t think I’ve ever turned it off. I always just unplug it, since I don’t leave it on the counter…

I’m going to go perform a test.

      • Phyrra

I usually leave mine on the tile surrounding my bathtub or the sink. Neither surfaces can burn.
I try to always remember to unplug it, but some mornings I’m brain dead. I did unplug it this morning but I had to run home and check.

the problem with most professional irons is that they are designed to be left on all day, so that we don’t have to wait on them to heat. I have at least 8 flat irons and I don’t think any of them have an auto-off feature :(

      • Phyrra

Yeah, I was hoping there would be something, maybe even a travel flat iron, that would shut off.

    • Jaycee

I have been using a Remington Wet 2 Straight Ceramic Straightener, 2″ for about 3 years now. It works great for me! And has a really good auto turn off feature. I think they make a 1″ of this as well. My hair is down past the middle of my back so the bigger the better (quicker) for me :)

The price is decent, and you can use it with wet or dry hair. Its not a cute color or pattern or anything.. but I’m the only one to see it! :D Hope this helps.

      • Phyrra

I’ll have to look for this. How does the auto turn off feature work? And I usually prefer smaller sizes, so it doesn’t bother me if it’s tiny :P

        • Jaycee

After an hour it just shuts itself off .. and starts cooling down. Ive actually had to turn it back on while I’ve been doing my hair before.. but THAT is rare :D Ive even noticed that this one will continue to beep to alert you that you’ve left it plugged in.. (even though its completely cooled and off after an automatic shut off. )

          • Phyrra

I just found it at ulta, and at $27 that’s not bad at all.

      • Phyrra

So I went to Ulta and talked to one of the ladies there after I’d looked at all the flat irons. While she was pushing the Chi, they didn’t seem to have the automatic shut off feature that the remington did have, so I ended up picking that up. Thank you for suggesting it!

        • Jaycee

You’re very welcome. :) I really have enjoyed mine. Let me know what you think of it :D Have a great day!

    • Kerry

I love my InfraShine, but it only has an on/off switch and temperature control.. no automatic shut off.. but I always either just turn the switch off, or unplug it. Hope someone has an awesome suggestion for you. :) I think Hot Tools makes some with auto-off features.. but I’ve never tried their products.

      • Phyrra

I’ve got a couple flat irons right now. The world’s smallest flat iron from Sally’s that’s pink with rhinestones, perfect for travel. A larger tourmaline hot tools one, and I think somewhere in my closet is my old black one.

It looks like I’ll have to go find the Remington one to try!

    • Madelyn

I gave in and bought the Ghd, its quite pricey but its amazing and will last you forever. It turns off after not being used for 30 minutes! It is a hair changing investment

      • Phyrra

        Nice!

    • http://www.turquoiseandsparkly.blogspot.com Corbyjane

Sounds like you have a lot of great suggestions, but I believe that all of Conair ‘s appliances currently manufactured have the auto-turn off. I use the curling irons and they turn off after 45 minutes or so.

      • Phyrra

When I was researching flat irons, the only ones I could find at Ulta – with the salesperson’s help after I’d looked through them on my own – were the Remington. I have a Conair blow dryer that I love :)

I second Jaycee’s suggestion of the Remington Wet 2 Straight Ceramic Straightener. I’ve been using the one-inch version for 2 years now and am thinking of buying this set: http://www.amazon.com/Remington-Straight-Plates-Straightener-Included/dp/B003UHAM9O/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&s=beauty&qid=1287434697&sr=1-3 as a backup. I like that it beeps to tell you it’s ready, and it does have auto shutoff.

Does anyone have a suggestion for an affordable – under $30 – curling iron? I’ve cut off 5 inches of hair – it’s a bit longer than yours in the back, not as long as yours in the front. I’d like to curl my bangs and sides back sometimes for a change.

      Mahalo!

I have a hai, which I really like, but it does not have an automatic shut off feature.

      • Phyrra

Yeah the automatic shut off feature is one I need. All my current ones don’t have it, though they’re nice.

    • kenzie.

I have a 1.5″ Chi Turbo, and mine has an auto-turn off feature. I never use it, but it’s there.

It’s honestly the best flat iron I’ve ever used, even better than the GHDs, which are supposed to be the absolute best….

      • Phyrra

You know, it’s ironic that the sales lady I spoke to was pushing chi but said it didn’t have the auto shutoff feature! How long have you had yours? How do you normally use it?

        • kenzie.

I don’t think the regular Chi has, but the Chi Turbo does..

I’ve had it for about a year and a half. I use it to straighten my hair in the morning almost every day, and I’m pretty good about turning it off. I also use a heat pad on a non-flammable surface in case I forget. Setting the timer isn’t too hard, and I have used it a few times, but I really don’t need it.

          • Phyrra

Mine is always on the tile surrounding my tub, which should be non-flammable, but I’m paranoid that something will go wrong. When I’ve left on my smaller one all day, the house didn’t burn down, but I had a panic attack over it :(

    • sarah

Speaking as a professional, and one who has experience with a handful of different flat irons, I wouldn’t recommend a CHI. I know they have the best reputation of any flatiron on the planet, but they’re not all that great.

I would look into the Paul Mitchell straighteners, or a GHD. But if you can get your hands on a BaByliss Pro, you wouldn’t be disappointed. I know GHDs have the turnoff feature, and I’m pretty sure the Paul Mitchells do, but I’m not 100% on the BaByliss. But mine has titanium plates and I LOVE it.

      • Phyrra

I always hear such mixed results about CHIs, My old stylist swore by them, my new one is eh about them. My friends who have emo hair love them.

I ended up with the Remington since it clearly stated it has the auto shut off feature and that’s the most important feature to me currently.

Where is the BaByliss normally carried?

    • Lindsay

I have the regular Chi 1″ It has the auto shut-off feature as far as I know, I’ve come home several times after leaving it on and it was off and cold. One thing I LOVE about the Chi is how long it lasts. I’ve had mine for about 6 years now and it still works like new.

      • Phyrra

That’s awesome! I love tools that are a good investment like that, ones that last a long time with good care.

My auto shut off feature is my father…. As in, “Father, I can’t leave work. Will you please go to my house & turn off my flat iron?”

      He always says I have melted something… I haven’t YET…. sigh…. I think I need an auto shut off iron too, lol…

      • Phyrra

LOL! I just hate the thought of leaving it on and burning down the house >.<

    • http://www.auntiepupule.com/blog/soos.php Soos

Thanks for the suggestion on the curling iron. I’ll be taking a look at it!

      • Phyrra

        You’re quite welcome Soos!

    • Sandi

I have the Conair Nano Silver with the steam feature. It has an automatic shut off. I could not function without auto shutoff…my OCD would never allow me to get out of my driveway. :)

      • Phyrra

Automatic shut off is so nice!
