I use Burt’s Bees Repair Serum on my eye area at night. It’s not as heavy as a cream, but I do feel like it does keep my eye area well hydrated.
I think that sounds nice! I mostly think if you use a good moisturizer, your skin will be good. You just have to apply carefully around the eye.
I’ve never used them and I never will!
I don’t think I need it, anyway… a good moisturizer is enough!
I have never tried toners, but I feel like doing so someday!

I read somewhere that eye creams should be lighter than your facial moisturizer ’cause richer creams aren’t good for that area… is that true?
I don’t know about that, to be honest. Most of the eye creams I’ve tried have been heavier than my facial moisturizer.
I found much the same information you did – separate eye creams aren’t necessary, you can use the same product you use on the rest of your face.
I use Olay Regenerist serum on face/neck/eyes, and I use a separate sunscreen (because I’m a weird sunscreen fanatic – gotta have my SPF 70.) The Olay Regenerist stuff is more costly than many things on the market; but I like the results I get. I buy it at Costco so I get a larger container and pay a little bit less than I would elsewhere, it also is in a pump-dispenser so that the product is not exposed to air until I’m ready to use it, and it works for me. I also like that it’s not scented.

I think what you’re doing is right though, using a quality product on your face/neck/eyes.

I have only recently started using an eye cream, only because I dont think my daily moisturizer is enough to use there, and hasn’t helped as much (I use a very very light moisturizer due to acne). I use Boots Botanics Eye/Lip correcting serum, http://www.us.boots.com/EyeLipCorrectionSerum/ . So far, it has helped me a lot to reduce my under eye circles and lines, but of course starting any new moisturizer where there was none will do that (or so I’ve been told).
You could perhaps try a richer moisturizer? It’s good that the serum has helped. And yes, I think if you go from using no product to some product, it should help.
I totally agree that eye creams are not necessary but at the same time, not all facial moisturizers are OK to use in the eye area.
I’ve used some face creams on my eyes that burned like mad that didn’t bother my face at all. So it depends on the person and like you said, a good quality face lotion is important.
I currently use Skin MD Natural Shielding lotion (which also has great ingredients) on my eyes, face and neck at night and in the morning.
It’s $18 for 4 ounce bottle, but you can find it cheaper on eBay. You can also get it with spf 15.
It’s wonderful for me.
I use Physicians Formula spf 50 powder every day, so I don’t need a face lotion with spf. I agree everyone should wear spf of some sort!

Everyone’s skin is different, and it evolves, too. Like Marci, I find my facial moisturizer isn’t effective enough under my eyes. I must be a work in progress, as no sooner do I solve one facial problem, then I get to experience a new one. I used to have dark circles and puffiness – those are gone. Now it’s fine wrinkles and dryness. For me, the more expensive the eye cream, the more effective. Luckily, I’ve received Natura Bisse and Kinerase samples, and these work well for me. I also need to use a richer cream (NB) at night and one that disappears under concealer (Kinerase) for day.
I rarely use toner, but sometimes find I need to use a very mild, alcohol-free version on spots on my combination/oily skin.
Eye creams are a must for me, along with sunscreen – I live in Hawaii! – and exfoliating.

I definitely agree that everyone’s skin is different and it changes.
I’m trying to find a very rich night cream that won’t leave my skin greasy. The Avon ANEW works well in that respect at night.
I definitely find moisturizer with SPF a necessity because of Florida
Hawaii has some of the same concerns!
My face has always been sensitive, but it I used to be dry and now I’m combination with a few oily spots

You’re quite welcome Sugar Sugar! This is just my opinion and the research I’ve done. I know people may disagree, but I at least wanted to put my experience out there.
I feel like some extra moisture is needed for the eye area (not necessarily EYE cream)since the skin is a tad more sensitive, and for eye makeup enthusiasts, with all the stretching, applying and removing, it’s necessary to add that extra moisture and keep the skin supple.
I personally don’t use any eye specific creams, but i DO use a more intense moisturizer (Weleda Skin Food, or Aromaleigh unflavored lip balm per Grey’s suggestions.
I also tend to have dry skin on my cheeks, around my nose and lips and eye area, so I really try to take care of it.
I definitely agree with you that a quality moisturizer is worth investing in.
It’s funny you mention lip balm! I use a vegan lip balm around my eyes if my eyes are feeing particularly dry or if I’ve had an allergic reaction. I first learned that on the Aromaleigh Forums about 2 years ago.

I think for most people eye creams are not neccessary. I do use a different moisturiser on my eyes to the rest of my face because of differnce in skin dryness. I’m allergic to the eyedrops I use to see and the skin around my eyes becomes very dry and occasionally cracks and peels, particularly around the top lid and over the tearduct area. The thing is most eyecreams have active ingrediants that would sting like crazy if used on broken skin so it’s a case of using something like pawpaw extract or lanolin instead. I do use an eye cream under my eyes to help with the dark circles and I do think that’s one case in which eye creams can be beneficial. I’m not convinced that there are other good reasons for using a specific eye cream.
I’m also not convinced that night creams are neccessary. Maybe that’s because I have no need for one.
That makes sense though, if you need a more emollient moisturizer around your eyes and the rest of your face needs a more lotion type of moisturizer.
When I’ve had allergic reactions to products, I’ve used a vegan lip balm around my eyes to help my skin heal, because a moisturizer definitely burned.
I think a night cream isn’t necessary so much as a quality moisturizer without SPF.
I have my perfect daytime moisturizer with SPF for me but I need to find a perfect nighttime moisturizer. And there’s nothing wrong with using moisturizers meant for day at night, or vice versa, as long as you make sure to use products with SPF to protect your skin during the day. I should have mentioned that above.
I have oily skin so it makes sense for me to apply a separate moisturizer to my eyes. It doesn’t necessarily need to be labeled as an eye cream; it just needs to be more emollient than the water-based serums I use on the rest of my face.
That makes sense to do. I have really super oily lids and the rest of my face is sensitive combination skin (where I get slightly oily on my cheeks, nose, chin and forehead).
Thanks so much for this information. Very helpful and validating to know that the regular moisturizer I use (and have been applying under my eyes as I apply on my face) is working just fine.

That is exactly how I felt when I was doing the research!
I like to put a little bit of shea butter under my eyes at night. It helps to make the fine lines seem a little less noticeable. As for a daytime moisturizer with SPF, Devita Solar Protective Moisturizer is my favorite.
I bet that’s great! Shea butter is great for its mosturizing properties.
I feel relieved now! I own an eye cream from Avene, but I never use it. I just use whatever’s left on my hands after I’m done with applying my moisturizer on my face and it works fine!
My current daily moisturizer (La Roche Posay Effaclar M) doesn’t contain SPF, but it makes my skin look matte, so I love it. I recently purchased their fluid sunscreen for combination-oily skin, but I haven’t used it yet. It doesn’t look heavy/oily at all, so I think it will work great!
As for night cream I can’t help you, as with my oily skin I don’t use one.

Being a cosmetic dermatologist I agree with everything you said about eye creams. These are just a splurge everyone should avoid for these contain no other ingredients than your facial or even a rich body moisturizer. The thing to keep in mind, however is to look for anti-oxidants rich moisturizer you put on eyes! Thanks for this post

I think it’s worthwhile to take the amount of money you’d spend on an eye cream and combine that with your facial moisturizer budget to find a high quality facial moisturizer that suits your skin. My daily facial moisturizer is supposed to be antioxidant rich, it’s the For Goodness Face by mark Avon.
Hi Phyrra, I understand your opinions on why you don’t think eye creams are totally necessary for one’s skin care regimen, but there is a place for them.
High quality eye creams add ingredients that help with the reduction of dark circles & puffiness so common in the eye area. For these ingredients designed for the skin around the eyes, one may not want those “ingredients” all over the face.
Also those types of ingredients are more expensive- thus the cost of those ingredients is absorbed in the end products price.
Another important factor is the fragrance – the eye area is sensitive to them and usually eye creams are fragrance free- they may have EO synergies in them but that is different, synthetic fragrances can cause irritation around the eyes in some people (as well as those that wear contact lenses).

As someone who wears contacts and has very sensitive skin, I can appreciate your response. However, I always have to make sure whatever moisturizer I use doesn’t irritate my sensitive skin, so I already have to take things like that into account.
Carolyn – If you feel that the eye creams you represent (Celazome I assume) are high quality and ARE necessary, and that they’d make a difference to someone like Phyrra who wears contacts and has sensitive skin around her eyes, why don’t you send her a sample to try and review for us?
That way we’d be able to see if an eye cream like yours would change her mind, and your comment would have more sway, since Phyrra is independent and you aren’t?
