Glittersniffer Gone?

It looks like Glittersniffer Cosmetics (aka the company that sold soap dyes as eye shadows to Aijuswhanakno and Rebecca, disappointed me with what I thought were unmarked repackaged colors, as well as harassed countless bloggers or had her followers harass bloggers who had called the company out on their questionable ingredients, lack of quality control, and bad customer service is closing.

The Facebook page is gone. Lela’s profile page is still there.

It looks as though she was offering to refund all customers but said it would take awhile because they didn’t have the money to give refunds. People are upset, finally, because they want a list of all the products they might have purchased that were not safe to use.

Since it oftentimes looked like the ingredients were soap dyes, I’m not surprised. Also, it was illegal for Glittersniffer to not list the ingredients on full size products. When I asked Lela about this, she said she didn’t list it because of other people ripping her off.

The company website says they’re on hiatus.

So who knows. Regardless, I won’t miss them. I think using soap dyes for eye shadows is wrong. I think sending people to harass reviewers is wrong. I think repackaging colors and not telling people is wrong (I  have no problem with unblended shadows that are marked as such, so that people KNOW what they’re buying).

Edit: Kira has a fantastic post with more information, which includes screen shots.

Here’s the link to the Glittersniffer forums, courtesy of Grey.

Here’s a link from Eplefe about the unsafe colors. It looks like just about every single color sold was unsafe. She said her stuff was vegan and safe, and it was apparently neither.

Additionally, according to PayPal’s Community site, Lela has engaged in frauding charities. In other words, collecting money for charities and they’ve  never heard of her. I think that’s horrible. You can see screenshots of it here, courtesy of Mindy.

Edit: There is now a blog called Glittersniffer Scam Reports that someone created to keep track of everything going on with Lela and Glittersniffer.

Edit: There’s another blog that is called Glittersniffer Complaints. It mentions Working Girl Cosmetics on Etsy, that is supposed to also be by Glittersniffer’s owner.

I was kind of keeping tabs on them lately and am not surprised at this ending. I am disappointed at how they are doing refunds but I’m glad to see them gone.

I’m worried that people won’t actually get refunded.

This kind of reminds me of the debacle with Calypso Minerals and their owner. I hope everyone gets their refunds :(

Yeah, I was glad I never dealt with that company.

Soap dyes?! That’s just incredible. Anyway, Glittersniffer doesn’t sound like a reliable or honest company so I won’t miss them either. Hopefully the hiatus will serve them some good.

I turned down a partnership with another company because they sold Glittersniffer.

Yes, I think breaking the law and endangering the health of your customers by lying to them is wrong, too.

I don’t understand why there’s debate. “Her stuff’s been fine for me!” Great, and you know a serial killer is great to all the people they DON’T MURDER. It doesn’t mean they’re great in general just because they didn’t murder everyone. Likewise, Glittersniffer must have been great to some customers, but to others they sold products as eyeshadow that aren’t even approved for use anywhere on your face.

I’ve never ordered from or dealt with Glittersniffer in particular, so I can’t speak on what was or was not done, but as a micro business I just can’t imagine trying to trick or cheat my customers and expect things to work out for me in the long run.

When you are a small company, your customers are EVERYTHING. (It should be that way regardless of company size, but I digress) I feel bad when I can’t get an order sent out well before my stated turnaround time, or when heaven forbid, an honest mistake is made in creating their item. I feel like I’ve let that customer down and the most important thing to me is making that right. I just can’t imagine doing business any other way.

I’d been contacted by Lela to give the company another chance, but it was right on the heels of her and her fans saying nasty stuff about Dominique on Facebook. So I declined.
I kept hearing how people were quitting working for her and that things were going downhill.

I ALMOST bought from this company when I first got interested in indie mineral make up companies. I am so glad that I didn’t. Then later, when all the glaring dishonesty reared its ugly head, I just shook my head in disgust.

But I remember how it is to be fooled easily when you first enter this world, so my sympathy goes out to those who have been mislead and wasted their money.

    • Phyrra December 20, 2010 at 1:09 pm #

I did purchase from this company and was very disappointed in what I received, and that was before the soap dye stuff and harassment of Dominique.

I bought from GS off Etsy when they first started out. I’ve not been back, and reading all the horrible things they have done I’m glad I never repurchased. Good riddance to bad rubbish.

    • Phyrra December 20, 2010 at 1:14 pm #

      I totally agree.

  9. JEnny Whiskey December 20, 2010 at 2:00 pm #

I’ve got quite a few Glittersniffer shadows. The early colors were for sure repacked, the newer ones seemed to be originally formulated, but nothing all that special. However her customer service is utterly heinous! I was active on the facebook page, traded with other fans, I’ve bought a few of her collections that were available only on FB. There were just too many inconsistancies!

And then there’s the fan drama….oh my god you would not believe the crap that goes on there. They are epically crazy (almost Lime Crime proportions!) Lots of bashing other girls, superiority, etc. It’s all very sad. And the owner of the company never did care much that her own fans were driving off other fans/potential customers because they’re bored and petty!

Just all around ugliness. I still follow them on FB and keep tabs, but I don’t participate like I used to. I’ve known too many people who’ve been burned by them, and Lela offers little to resolve the issues.

There’s not much to tell I’m afraid! I was reading through the comments on a facebook set that was for sale, and someone offered to trade for handmade jewelry with an Etsy link, and GlitterSniffer responded with something like “I can’t go on Etsy I was banned” or something to that extent. Just nonchalant like it was no big deal! They’re store has been completely disabled for a while now.

        • Becca December 20, 2010 at 11:34 pm #

They may have been banned due to non-payment of fees. Etsy seller fees are a bear, and some sellers think it’s okay to just stop paying them once they get a following going that they can take elsewhere to another site. Considering all the other lovely things GS has pulled, i wouldn’t put it past them.

          • Phyrra December 22, 2010 at 6:05 pm #

            That’s horrid!

  11. Kimberly Marquez December 20, 2010 at 2:08 pm #

Goodness! I ordered from this company back when they were still on Etsy. It was such a fiasco. I placed two orders on the same day and they were pretty big orders, I received one order completely destroyed because they didn’t package anything well. The other order I never received and after a ridiculous amount of emails that were never responded to, I only got a refund after I threatened to file a claim with paypal. I stopped following them on Facebook or anywhere else for that matter. One of the girls that worked for her “tried to make it up to me” by sending a couple of shadows, but really?? Lela also fired this girl, which is said because she’s the only who even helped anyone.

They had a huge (cult) following and they were crazy when somebody said anything remotely negative about the company. I just found this though: http://www.artfire.com/users/GlittersnifferCosmetics

It’s weird that they have an Artfire when they have their own domain….

I really hope this company goes up in flames and never comes back.

Yeah there are a LOT of weird things about this company.

  12. Belen December 20, 2010 at 2:22 pm #

The lack of quality control and the use of such things as soap dyes (and who knows what else!) of companies like GS really worries me. There should be some kind of control on that. I think Etsy should force us sellers to put an ingredient list on B&B item we sell there (and take off the number of ingredient limit you can add), yes you can always lie, but at least you have to take the time to do it.

It really bothers me that very soon, thanks to companies like GS, people will end up thinking MMU is just an easy way to make money and scam people with poor quality or even dangerous products.

I pity those who made orders lately, this smells a lot like the Calypso fiasco…

I think it’s been at the point for a while that people think MMU is an easy way to make money, and that there are companies that have already taken advantage of companies (Calypso, Lime Crime, etc).

So I’m doing my daily search of Etsy for shadows and I find this:

Girls, isn’t this the company you’re talking about?

    • Phyrra December 22, 2010 at 6:05 pm #

      Unfortunately yes.

  14. Kira December 20, 2010 at 4:44 pm #

When I did buy and went through a huge fiasco where I never got product for months. I finally got my money back and she sent some products “in good faith”. I got them but found most close to my TKB colours with glitter.

During my fiasco I put in two Etsy disputes for the two products I ordered. I got an email back saying because they didn’t reply they were banned. Obviously they were getting to many and my complaint was the last straw. So she wont be back via the name glittersniffer on etsy too easily.

Though I just checked and her other company Working girl Cosmetics which sells her “dull” colours is still up and functional with over 50 items for sale and nothing mentioning the other problems.

  15. Anna Lee December 20, 2010 at 4:52 pm #

Yeah, I’m really disappointed in all of this. I was really into it at the beginning of the year, I even convinced my friend to also get a nice little collection of GS, and after a few months we started becoming convinced they were repacked. I got a very snarky message when I linked someone to a TKB mica listing that was the exact one that was being repackaged. We didn’t like the way the fanpage was treating people, didn’t like how we were being treated by the fans & the company.
I waited until I received my last package, one which I waited two months for, and started trying to ease all of the people I had talked to about GS away from the company. I didn’t get the 80′s collection, but that really blew me away too, especially because it was not made clear at first that they weren’t eye safe. :(

  16. JennyWhiskey December 20, 2010 at 4:59 pm #

After reading some more comments, I also thought I’d add, more often than not, the colors weren’t recipe formulated…that is to say…you sometimes got a completely different color than what you ordered. I remember Lela admitting to not having exact recipes, which is scary, because you never know what you’re gonna get! I’ve definitely rec’d 2 of the same labeled shadow that were 2 completely different colors. This complaint showed up A LOT on the boards.

    • Anna Lee December 20, 2010 at 5:19 pm #

I was very disappointed with a lot of the colors I got because of this. I have several colors that were supposed to be ‘dark’ colors, but when I swatch them they are just varying levels of black with different colored glitters. I also had many of my choices subbed for different colors when the colors I wanted were listed as available on specific lists posted to the fan page. It was very frustrating.

If so, she decided to pay back her ex friend from Madd Style by stealing her collection ideas. I noticed they do not have their home town listed in their profile as many do. Too much of a give away? Also, the Etsy listing gives a link to a Facebook page and I couldn’t get it to come up by copying and pasting or by typing in the name of the company. Seems VERY much like GS to me, especially the little glitter vials. I’d be really surprised if it was not Lela.

The photography is AWFULLY similar…I’m not going to say it definitely IS GS but is very well could be? The heavy Metals, glitter vials, the neons, AND the Rice Powder are all products they hawked. As I said before the photography is how the GS store was on Etsy.

MacisMyCrack has some interesting experiences with GlitterSniffer as well. You wanna see some truly deplorable customer service? Read her entries about them. Utterly befuddling. I guess it was only a matter of time before they crashed and burned.

There were a few cool chicks on the boards though….i should contact them and switch them to HiFi! haha

I remember this listing because these are straight TKB – you can get those 4 colours from TKB super cheap. She also has been the only one in memory to use those jars and even the type face is the same. Also using little hearts as bullet points is so her.

I wonder if it’s the same lady! It really scared me because there’s lots of etsy members who are new to the makeup scene, and who may not have tried loose shadows or heard about repackaging. Just because she thinks it’s “safe” doesn’t mean it may not burn someone else’s eyeballs out.

When a friend of mine didn’t get an order she’d made after waiting a month and being lied to at least 4 different times on when her package would be shipped, she filed a dispute and Lela went nuts, telling her she had been in the hospital, she needed back surgery, she didn’t have money to buy her son diapers (he’s 4 by the way), she got a flat tired, she got pulled over by the cops, any excuse she could think of. I’ve heard that she makes around 100k a year. If anyone is missing any product, I encourage you to file a dispute with Paypal. But be prepared for nasty emails and phone calls from Lela.
I did not see this coming. The fans from the Etsy days were rabid, they would attack you if you made the slightest complaint. So I assumed that at least for them, things were going okay. Why not take care of your hardcore fans if you’re going to take care of anyone? I guess she couldn’t be bothered to do that much. I know she has a whole lot of unhappy people on her hands and I guess hiding was her way of dealing with it.

They’re still rabid. Waiting for them to attack me for this blog post.

Sorry to hijack the comments, but I have had horrible experiences with online sellers in the past. It makes my blood boil that someone would take advantage of so many people. I have a list of links below where you can report GlitterSniffer and Lela for fraud, unsafe cosmetics, and in general being a shoddy businesswoman. Some of them may seem a bit extreme, but what she has done violates not only ethics, but federal law. Most of the links are specific to Michigan, where GS is based, but some are national as well. If everyone reports their issues we can rest assured that her unsafe cosmetics will never be sold again.

There are so many AMAZING indie makeup companies out there…these scammers (it is basically a scam when they take money and don’t deliver) disgust me when there are people out there working so hard to be original and please their customers. Who do they think they are?

    • Phyrra December 21, 2010 at 8:18 pm #

I think companies like this are why more people are afraid to try new companies.

      • Spooki December 21, 2010 at 10:29 pm #

Oh definitely. I was scammed by an online company years ago (got a refund like 2 years later at least) and it has made me very weary.

Especially with so many fly-by-night TKB resellers all over the internet, I wait and read as many reviews as possible before buying.

  32. Kira December 22, 2010 at 1:59 am #

I love reading some of her facebook and other stuff how people are saying it is not her fault she sold unsafe cosmetics and that us haters are the problem not the fact people are not getting packages or getting the wrong thing. Half the posts on her facebook right now are either telling her she is doing a good job, or saying they are missing half the stuff or got wrong stuff but they don’t care.

It’s insanity, so its the consumer who is at fault if the maker can’t even send the items out, and if they do send the wrong out and get angry when we want what we bought.

I also don’t like the argument that she sold these items that were bad for eyes with the best intentions. It makes me worry a lot because the information is so easy to find, so she obviously has no clue about makeup and obviously doesn’t make her own if she doesn’t know basic facts.

If this was just randomly the distributor said oh damn I know I told you these were safe, but new research says it isn’t. The research is sitting there when you buy from the distributors!

    • Phyrra December 22, 2010 at 6:11 pm #

It’s her decision to sell soap dyes as eye shadow. Some consumers just do not understand the risk.

      • Spooki December 22, 2010 at 10:03 pm #

With listings that say crap like “MAC does it” and lies like “it’s approved for limited cosmetic use” it’s easy to see how an uneducated consumer wouldn’t understand what they are looking at. If the listing was truthful said “these are soap dyes and not approved for cosmetic use” I think consumers would be much less inclined to purchase. When I first saw the 80s collection I could not have ever imagined they were simply soap dyes.

I just don’t understand how someone could be so irresponsible with the health and safety of their customers. Lela is very lucky nobody was seriously injured (although, if I understand correctly some customers did receive minor injuries). It’s one thing to have an allergic reaction to an approved ingredient and quite another to have a reaction to a non cosmetic ingredient that was used with full knowledge that it’s not safe.

Crap like this makes me feel really uncomfortable about trying new companies.

        • Anna Lee December 22, 2010 at 10:51 pm #

Exactly! And the fact is, at first she did NOT tell people about the fact that the 80′s collection was soap dyes. Even after the post, that I believe Rebecca wrote, so many fans were convinced that it was just some evil blogger out to get Lela and kept right on buying and requesting the collection. That was when she actually started listing them as non-FDA safe, before that there was NO warning. And no, there are absolutely NO Mac shadows that are made with soap dyes. There are however glow in the dark/blacklight reflective pigments they sell. I couldn’t find a link just now, but what I do remember reading about them is that MAC never advertised them as eye shadows, and has it directly on the box/label that they are not cosmetically safe for use near or on the eyes. I absolutely hated the whole, ‘they aren’t safe but I use them just fine!” argument, because it’s not truly an argument, it’s a deflecting point.

I agree with you. It’s not responsible as a company to say ‘These are safe because I use them’ when they’re clearly not FDA approved.

I’m one of the people burned by her and I thought for a very long time I was alone simply BECAUSE so many people on her fanpage pay her compliments and say she is amazing. I’m still a ‘fan’ of the page simply because I am awaiting my paypal refund and until it’s safely in my account I want to know what’s going on. I’ve had to deal with her unpleasantness via email and there was a link to a very disturbing voicemail she left one of her former biggest supporters on the ‘reviews’ portion of her page [which has been removed entirely].

I really hope all the people wronged by her get their money back and also that you do not get attacked for your post. I’m glad people are finally standing up and making their voices heard on this.

    • Anna Lee December 22, 2010 at 10:42 pm #

Yeah, apparently Mo Love (<3) broke off from GS and started her own MMU company and that really made Lela mad, apparently accusing her and others of "stealing her fanbase", which I don't understand, people can like MORE than one company. That was one of the things about the GS fanpage, it was basically like you had to throw out all your other makeup or else you'd be sinning against the great ole GS company, because one should only use one brand of eyeshadow, ick. I also hope that everyone gets their money back, and more hopefully that some of her insanely loyal fans stop what they are doing and think about WHY all of these former customers are mad. It is such a shame that the customers are truly getting the wrong end of the stick in this battle.

Yea I remember when Mo left and Lela had a freak-out about it.. truth is Mo wasn’t stealing her customer base, people were just moving over to Madd Style because they were fed up with how they were treated at GS. I’m going to give Mo’s company a shot since I’ve only heard good things.. I saw though that Lela put out a new mission statement for GS and has hired a whole new crew so they’re not going anywhere anytime soon it would seem.

Yes it comes off as quite fake. To be honest what bothers me the most about this entire affair is that people were using these pigments on their children.. and she has a collection marketted towards little girls that sold quite well which contained at least one pink [she is now claiming her pinks are unsafe].

  37. Eplefe December 23, 2010 at 2:50 am #

I have to say, even if she does fix her business and make her products safe and vegan I won’t be buying. I just can’t trust this company to make safe cosmetics.

Sorry, but I value my vision more than pretty colors.

  39. Jenny Whiskey December 23, 2010 at 10:53 am #

I also just saw the post today. I don’t know, I can’t see how anyone can read that and still back her up like ” IT’S OK!!! IT’S OK TO SELL HARMFUL THINGS AND SELL THEM AS COMETICS…WE ALL MAKE MISTAKES..” Etc…. You know what? I bought the 80′s soap dye collection, and used it a bunch before I found out what it was, and it caused me no harm, BUT I would *NEVER* suggest anyone else do the same and can’t believe a “business owner” ever would. It’s just utterly insane. I can only hope she is sincere about turning her bad business practices around and making a legitimately unique and safe product in the future. But my gut is telling me, it’s probably jsut a ruse. Sad but true.

  40. e. December 23, 2010 at 10:21 pm #

Honestly, through this entire thing I cannot believe more people aren’t upset about her not donating money raised to the charities? This really irks me.. above everything else. Flat out lying to your customers to tell them the proceeds from their purchases are going to charities.. and then you never even donate the money??! How can someone so heartless even exist??!? I guess I never heard anything straight from the GS “Queen” herself… but I believe it anyways with everything else going on. Does anyone know where this started.. or have any actual proof? I mean that is straight up fraud.. I would be surprised if jail time wasn’t brought into the equation. I tried asking her.. but I highly doubt I will ever see a response.

    • Sarah Elicia December 23, 2010 at 10:58 pm #

I was just kicked off the fanpage for inquiring about those charities.. I actually sent emails to two of them last night inquiring on whether or not they received donations from her or her company and I provided links to the pictures of the donated collections on her page. I’ve also emailed her, but like you I doubt I will get a response.. I’m not going away though. This is straight up illegal and probably the most shady thing she’s done.

      • Phyrra December 24, 2010 at 11:40 am #

Eplefe emailed her and she emailed the charities. The charities responded that they’d never heard of her, so that makes me suspect that the money never ended up there.

  41. JennyWhiskey December 24, 2010 at 11:08 am #

Wait wait wait……She didn’t give that money to the charities?!?!?!? Where did you hear this??? I mean, i suppose I’m not all that surprised….but still OH MY GOD who DOES that??? I’m so utterly disgusted right now…

    • Phyrra December 24, 2010 at 11:12 am #

That’s what it says according to PayPal’s community. Also, Eplefe emailed the several charities that she was supposed to donate to, and they’d never heard of her. To me, if you consider the fact that she’s already lied about ingredients, lied about being vegan, etc, it’s likely she’s lied about other things, like that. It does make me sick.

    • KittenMittons December 24, 2010 at 12:19 pm #

she admits she didn’t send the money due to all the paypal disputes so she kept the money for herself to help pay off the disputes!
http://s119.photobucket.com/albums/o139/AxSDenied/Glittersniffer%20Fail/ last 3 pics, 1st 2 are her excuses, last one is pissed off customer telling her why she was wrong. 6 months to earn it all back? That’s friggin rediculous. Especially since I’m sure her sales are probably going to drop being a crappy business woman. Oh waiiiit, she says she’s not that either. (4th last screen copy)
For someone who admits she can’t run a business, why the hell would anyone continue to buy? Lure them in with free soap? Melt and pour. I made that when I was 10. Anything to make a quick buck.

I can’t believe she would not only admit to not donating those funds in a public forum but that she seems to think it’s ok to use them to pay off her mounting debt.. I’m also dumbfounded that some of the girls on that thread seem satisfied with this.

  42. e. December 24, 2010 at 11:21 am #

After asking her about it all day yesterday, she finally responded. I have mixed feelings about this. Yes, she probably is broke as shit because of all the refunds.. So she doesn’t have emails stating she’d donate money?

  43. Desiree December 24, 2010 at 3:11 pm #

I am completely disgusted right now. I was put off the company when she refused to send people things they ordered and lied about sending things out when she knew she hadn’t done so. Now they’re begging people not to throw out their unsafe shadows and sell them to people who don’t care about their own health. Sick and wrong. I noticed a class action lawsuit is being brought up by former members. All I can say is hallelujah! I hope for the best for them. They have truth on their side and I sincerely hope justice prevails. Especially those who complained about eye infections and other eye problems. I feel like being sick now. =( I’m throwing out the few I have for sure.

  48. francesdanger December 25, 2010 at 1:11 pm #

    Last comment, I promise.

I wanted to let everyone know that the FDA asks if you have any of the product that may be harmful to keep it in the event they need to be tested as part of their investigation.

Lela has stated that she will give refunds for returned products, as well as stating she has already been contacted by the FDA.

So, how are people supposed to recover financially if they cannot send their products back?

For my part I have filed every complaint imaginable, as well as sending GS an email requesting a refund and outlining my reasons (per the FDA) why I will not be sending back my pigments in order to obtain one.

My hope is that GS will do the right thing, both morally and from a customer service standpoint, and refund me without a return.

  49. Desiree December 25, 2010 at 3:37 pm #

She is only taking recalls on the products on her list which contains mostly pinks/reds, pressure sensitives, the 80′s and glow in the darks. Does it disturb anyone else that she made a set just for little girls that was so unsafe that she’s being forced to recall it? >..<
I am not going to count on any sort of refund but I will hang on to what I have in case the FDA should request it.. I'm not even going to bother asking Lela. I'm glad I never received my charity collection now as it seems most of it has been deemed unsafe and I'd be stuck with more stuff I can't use. Total waste of money.
I am going to file a complaint with the FDA as I have used this product on my very sensitive eyes and also on my children and thinking we could have sustained some injury from her negligence makes me see red.

  50. Kira December 26, 2010 at 1:32 pm #

I am also shocked when I saw the pictures of her work area. I work in a hospital so have had it beaten into me about hygiene and protection. I would at least expect:

Gloves – for every step except once the envelope is sealed and all. Even if you were brilliant at washing your hands (majority of people miss spots and don’t wash long enough), what moisturiser is she using, is she using a soap/antibacterial that wont irritate people if they touch what she has.

Masks – For her employees and our protection working with finely milled particles (TKB sells them with the their MMU making packs for a reason). Also if someone was sick.

Surface – The surface she is using didn’t look clean and looked like it was a common use area. Did she clean the pots pigments come in or dump them straight in? What did she use to clean her implements etc…

A picture where someone was holding a set and there hand was COVERED in colours had me shocked. I once moved over 100 sample pigments from baggies to jars with a fan, cat in my bed (only I use them) and didn’t even get close to how messy. Only got a little glitter from when I opened each packet. Makes me think they are touching product.

Also do these use sifters….if so they were not using gloves and touching a part your pigments will touch all the time….ICK!

I have to wash my hands if I go into a patient room and touch their clipboard or edge of bed/table because someone else might have touched it. By the looks of the whole operation I really don’t think any rigourous hygiene was in place and the lack of the basics makes me question the entire operation.

People on the boards are begging other people to sell them their on safe pigments. That’s fair enough if they really want something with known issues.

I think this has hit past the Calypso Minerals debacle and that was pretty damn big.
