Stila Smudge Pots Review

Back in April 2010 I picked up two Stila Smudge pots on Hautelook: Cobalt Clutch and Purple Pumps. I liked them well enough that I’ve used them on and off. They can be used as an eyeliner or an eye shadow, though I prefer to use them as a base to pop colors or as a liner. Recently, I also purchased Pomegranate via ebay, and with a purchase from Stila’s deeply discounted warehouse sale (because of a huge delay in shipment) I received a smudge pot set of 4 for free.

The colors I have are:
Black – black
Pomegranate – metallic red, leaning burgundy
Kitten – shimmering nude pink
Starry Night – deep midnight blue with gold duo-tone
Violet – deep vibrant violet with violet shimmer
Cobalt Clutch – vibrant blue with blue shimmer
Purple Pumps – red-based purple with pink shimmer

Other colors they come in:
Bronze – shimmering bronze
Brown – matte brown
Jade – shimmering jade green
Cobalt – shimmering cobalt blue
Gray – grey
Black Cat – shimmery black

The website Claims:
Double as eyeliner and eye shadow
Can be worn on the inner rim of the eyes
Very creamy and easy to work with
A product of the USA

The ingredients are:
Isodecyl Salicylate, Polyethylene, Cyclopentasiloxane, Trimethylsiloxysilicate, Disteardimonium Hectorite, Lecithin, Phenyltrimethicone, Hydrogenated Polyisobutene, Propylene Carbonate, Barium Sulfate (CI 77120), Phenoxyethanol, May Contain (+/-): Mica, Titanium Dioxide (CI 77891), Iron Oxides (CI 77491, 77492, 77499), Bismuth Oxychloride (CI 77163) (CI 77163), Carmine (CI 75470) (CI 75470), Chromium Hydroxide Green (CI 77289), Chromium Oxide Greens (CI 77288), Ferric Ammonium Ferrocyanide (CI 77510) (CI 77510), Manganese Violet (CI 77742), Ultramarines (CI 77007)

They’re not vegan as they contain Carmine.

Price:
$20 for .14 oz, $26 for 4 mini sizes each .07 oz each
However, you can find them on sale.
I purchased Cobalt Clutch & Purple Pumps for $12 each on Hautelook.
I purchased Pomegranate for $13 on eBay.
I received the mini set for free from Stila with a purchase I made because of a long delay with my order, but I’ve seen the mini set priced from $20 to $26.

Do they live up to their claims?
Yes and no. Yes they definitely can be worn as eye shadow or eyeliner. They’re definitely creamy and easy to work with.

However, with my sensitive eyes, I cannot wear the shimmery shades on my waterline. In fact, when I got Purple Pumps in my eye, I had an adverse reaction. My eyes ended up swollen. So I can wear the shades with visible glitter, such as Purple Pumps and Cobalt Clutch only very carefully. The smooth shimmery shades, such as Pomegranate or Kitten or Starry Night I can wear with no problem. I can also wear the matte shades, such as Black, with no issue.

I love using these as a base, and they’re pretty enough to be worn alone. Kitten is an ideal shade for a ‘my skin but better’ eye look on me.

Would I purchase again?
Yes, but when I can find them on sale! I really like these products. I prefer to use them as a base to make eye shadow colors more vivid, but I also love them as liners. Other colors I want to try are Black Cat, Jade and Bronze.

Have you tried Stila’s Smudge Pots? If so, what did you think of them?

Hello Phyrra! I saw that you said you like finding these paint pots on sale. I’ve had a site bookmarked that has discounted prices on lots of major brands so I checked to see if they had these paint pots & they do! I think I might try them out. Thanks for your perspective :)

I don’t know how I would wear Pomegranate, but I want it! (The ‘creamy’ part worries me; are they crease-proof?)

I use an eye shadow primer, so they’re crease proof on me.

I LOVE Kitten as a smudgepot, in fact, I use it more as eyeshadow in this form than in the regular eyeshadow form.
I dont own a lot of Stila products, but I would purchase the Kitten smudgepot again and again.
