TRESemmé Fresh Start Dry Shampoo – A Review

Recently I had the opportunity to try TRESemmé’s Fresh Start Dry Shampoo. My grandmother had purchased me some TRESemmé hair spray and it came with a mini bottle of their dry shampoo.

The website says:

Do not miss a fresh look and feel even on the second day.
TRESemmé Fresh Start Dry Shampoo is the perfect solution to clean hair without water anytime.
The unique formula, with Mineral Clay and Citrus, refreshes your hair by removing oil and odor while injecting volume.
Just a quick spray transforms lifeless, limp hair into clean, fresh hair with full of bouncy body.
It also helps to maintain hair color with less washing.
This product is not tested on animals.

The Ingredients are:
Hydrofluorocarbon 152A , Alcohol Denat. , Zea Mays Starch (Corn) , Magnesium Stearate , Aluminum Starch Octenylsuccinate , Benzyl Alcohol , PPG-3 , Linalool , Limonene , Butylphenyl Methylpropional , Amyl Cinnamal , Hexyl Cinnamal , Citronellol , Geraniol , Glycerin , Citrus Grandis Fruit Extract (Grapefruit) , Citrus Tangerina Peel Extract (Tangerine)

Price:
$3.49 for 5.7 oz

I love dry shampoo. Specifically I love Batiste dry shampoo and nothing else has ever worked as well on my hair. However, I was excited to try the TRESemmé to see if something new could win my heart.

Unfortunately for my hair, TRESemmé fell flat with its claims. My hair is stick straight, and normal, not oily, not dry. I normally go 5 to 7 days between washing my hair. When I used TRESemmé Fresh Start Dry Shampoo on my hair, I applied it the same way I apply Batiste. I shook the can vigorously and sprayed it on my hair. I waited a few minutes to let it soak up stuff, and then went to brush it out. I had AWFUL looking white flakes all over from it. Gross! I tried a few different types of brushes to salvage my hair, and finally just gave up in thorough disgust.

Would I purchase?
No. It left a nasty white residue in my hair that did not want to brush out. It did not make my hair bouncy and full of boddy. It did not look fresh. It looked nasty. This product did not work in my hair at all. I’m going to stick to Batiste.

Product was a gift from my Grandmother. All opinions are my own.

I’m really surprised. I actually have a full size of this and I really like it.

I’ve been trying out a couple different dry shampoos for a review post, and it’s one of my favorites.

For whatever reason, when I used it, it left nasty white flakes. It was hard to brush out. I don’t have that problem with Batiste, and I was surprised. The other dry shampoo I tried and hated was Ojon, which surprised me too.

My hair is normal/dry, not oily at all, which is why I can go days in between washing.

I also love Batiste! I wish it came in a bigger can! From all the reviews i could find, most who use and love Batiste don’t like the Tresemme one as well. I think I’ll just stick to my Batiste for sure now! Thanks for your review!

Ahh, I hadn’t looked up reviews on the Tresemme one, since I didn’t buy it and it was given to me as a gift.

  3. KittenMittons December 4, 2010 at 10:53 am #

ahhhh that sucks! My dry shampoo leaves a bit of a white residue that brushes out eventually but I will stay away from this tresemme one foooo sho :)
You just reminded me, I have to dye my hair soon. I get a cut next Saturday, I hope she will have time to bleach it a bit. I have 2 bottles of Blood Red I bought from Melissa that I’ve been dying to use!!!

I hate that stuff, too. It gave me scalp crud. And also smells terrible!

I don’t remember there being a distinct odor, but definitely scalp crud.

  5. Quiara December 4, 2010 at 11:37 am #

Wow — that’s the exact opposite of my experience. I bought the full size and loved it; it’s a staple now. No white residue in my red hair…. Sorry it sucked for you, though; it’s a nice, inexpensive alternative to the HE dry shampoos.

Thankfully the Batiste I love is inexpensive as well :)

Well phooey. You finally reviewed something that’s specifically on my WANT list, and it sucked. I’m seeing mixed opinions, though, so maybe I’ll still try it.

to Quiara and Grey: Do you have oily hair? Maybe that makes the difference. (I have oily hair and thought this would be a great 2nd-day time-saver.)

  8. Quiara December 4, 2010 at 1:19 pm #

Heya, Jean. I don’t have particularly oily hair. I do need to wash it every other day, so … normalish? But yeah, I use it for the second day. I haven’t tried it as a long-term like Phyrra mentioned — I haven’t tried it for more than the 2nd day and washed the next, so YMMV, obviously.

Yeah, I don’t wash but every 5 to 7 days, and usually around the 5th day I use a dry shampoo. My hair doesn’t really get oily, so I tend to not wash it until I feel it’s dirty.

Glad for you to chime in on how often you wash! It’s always interesting to hear.

  9. Amanda December 4, 2010 at 4:20 pm #

It worked for me. But then I have straight hair that if it doesn’t get washed fairly regularly will look gross (oily type) I usually have to wash at least every two days, by the third it looks like I neglected it for about a month or two. I only got the white crud when I sprayed it too close to my hair and when I tried to use it two days in a row since I was feeling slightly ill and lazy.

Maybe the oil has something to do with it. Sorry it didn’t work for you, but at least you gave it a shot and didn’t need to shell out any money in the deal.

    • Phyrra December 5, 2010 at 10:41 am #

No worries! I’m just happy to be able to write about it.

  10. sarah December 4, 2010 at 7:00 pm #

Well, aren’t YOU just SO SPECIAL. If I went that long without shampooing my hair it would look like I was using my scalp as a petri dish. And my hair is so thick that when it gets dirty it just sits there like plastic.

Sorry that stuff didn’t work out for you. I’ve used KMS, Big Sexy Hair, and TIGI Rockaholic dry shampoos, but ultimately I’d rather just wash my hair every other day and deal with the color loss.

    • Phyrra December 5, 2010 at 10:40 am #

Hm, actually I wonder if it’s because my hair isn’t thick that it doesn’t get that oily.

It’s ok :) I’d rather try something and be able to talk about the experience, be it positive or negative.

      • sarah December 5, 2010 at 11:40 pm #

It’s usually the other way around. I’m just unlucky like that.

One of my first clients in beauty school, for a roller set, was a lady who hadn’t washed her hair in two years. I can’t imagine it. And why, do you ask? Because she got a perm at Wal-Mart and it made her hair fall out. I’m sorry, but washing your hair doesn’t normally make it fall out. My friend and I both worked on her and we argued in the back room over who had to go check on her under the dryer. Mean, I know, but UGH.

        • Phyrra December 8, 2010 at 9:19 pm #

I actually used to wash my hair every day, then my stylist when I lived in California told me I didn’t need to with my hair type. So I started spacing it out to see how long I could go without washing my hair. It depends on the products used in my hair but usually 5 to 7 days at this point.

  11. Jeni December 4, 2010 at 10:47 pm #

I bought this and when I sprayed it on my hair, it made it all oily and ashy – it looked gross like you said. I almost threw it out, but then I tried spraying it underneath my hair and it adds volume to my limp, stringy hair. So I now use it as a volumizer. I still need a dry shampoo. ha. I haven’t tried any of the other ones yet.

Dry Shampoo is a fantastic thing ;)

  13. Spooki December 5, 2010 at 5:18 pm #

This stuff works well enough as a dry shampoo but it refuses to brush out properly and leaves my hair looking dull.

I really liked the first one I tried by Oscar Blandy, it came in a bottle and not a spray can.

    • Phyrra December 8, 2010 at 9:34 pm #

It sucks when it doesn’t brush out properly.

  14. Waverleigh December 5, 2010 at 9:16 pm #

I actually love this. I haven’t tried other dry shampoos though. I have oily hair and it works for me. But as I’ve gotten closer to the end of the can, it tends to leave more white stuff in my hair that takes forever to brush out.

    • Phyrra December 8, 2010 at 9:35 pm #

I’m betting it’s because my hair isn’t oily, so it doesn’t work as well in my hair. It’s great that it works in yours ;)

  15. roxcat December 6, 2010 at 5:50 am #

I’ve been thinking of trying Batiste, seems like that is the way to go then =) I’ve tried Toni & Guy’s dry shampoo which I think is okay, but I hope Batiste will work even better for me.

      I really love Batiste!

  16. Michelle December 6, 2010 at 4:21 pm #

I use straight up baby powder. I use a blush brush and apply to the roots, then brush through. I have never found a dry shampoo that works amazingly so I stick to the cheap stuff!

    • Phyrra December 8, 2010 at 9:35 pm #

How do you get it out?

  17. denelian December 10, 2010 at 1:52 am #

this is late, i know – but i really did just find you!

and this is VERY relevant to my interests.

see, i have to, well, “problems”

the first i love – i have THICK hair that’s almost to my knees [2.5 inches shy of them, to be exact]. i love my hair. it tends towards slightly dry, but me.

i CAN’T wash my hair every day. my preference is similar to yours – i’d wash every 4-5 days *if i could*
but i’m disabled – taking a showing is a PRODUCTION! it hurts [even sitting, sometimes i come close to fainting from the pain]. i sponge bathe with the most wonderful hospital soap – rub it in, wipe it off. it’s a foam thing, it’s seriously wonderful. i’m used to showering daily, even if i don’t wash my hair that often.

and i’ve been looking for a dry shampoo that doesn’t the actually dry my hair out. i’ve tried several – but not Batiste. i’m hoping you can tell me – DOES it dry one’s hair even further? i don’t have oily hair until after 7-8 days, my issue is the dryness.
ok, ALSO that i end up with tangles ever HARDER to get out, but that’s from the dryness.

so i’m going to try the batiste – but i’d like to know if it’s drying :) also, if you have a rec for a spray conditioner to go with it – i’ve had bad combos, and don’t want to repeat that!

any info/help would be forever appreciated! thanks :)

      Hi!
The two that work best for my hair, which is non-oily and until recently was down to the middle of my back, are Batiste dry shampoo (available from Sally Beauty Supply) and Tigi Superstar Volumizing leave in conditioner. Since you have thick hair, you probably won’t want a volumizing leave in conditioner but Tigi may have some other types.
