CoverGirl NatureLuxe Liquid Silk Foundation in 305 Alabaster Review

A while ago I picked up the Covergirl NatureLuxe Liquid Silk Foundation in 305 Alabaster. I was curious about the formula and the color, though I was afraid that Alabaster would have pink undertones, as opposed to being pale neutral or pale warm. It seems like an unwritten rule that all drugstore brands must make their palest foundation shades have pink undertones. I don’t understand why they don’t make their palest shades neutral, but I digress.

The Website Claims:
Luxurious, lightweight feel
Silky formula
Contains a hint of jojoba and cucumber extract
SPF 10

The Ingredients are:
Active Ingredients: Titanium Dioxide (2.6%), Octinoxate (2%) Inactive Ingredients: Cyclopentasiloxane, Water, Cucumis Sativus Fruit (Cucumber), Glycerin, Dimethicone Crosspolymer, Sodium Chloride, Diethylhexyl Carbonate, Talc, Propylene Glycol, PEG/PPG 18/18 Dimethicone, Simmondsia Chinensis (Jojoba) Seed Wax (Jojoba), Rosa Canina Fruit Extract, Hippophae Rhamnoides Fruit Juice, Panthenol, Tocopheryl Acetate (Vitamin E), Allantoin (Comfrey Root), Dimethicone, Methicone, Aluminum Hydroxide, Fragrance, Trideceth 9, Bisabolol (L-Alpha), Lactic Acid, PEG 10 Dimethicone Crosspolymer, PEG 10, Citric Acid, Sodium Benzoate, Potassium Sorbate, Benzyl Alcohol, Phenoxyethanol, May Contain (+/-): Iron Oxides

305 Alabaster with just a bit of Meow Inquisitive Siamese on the t-zone & under the eyes

Price:
$8.00 for 1 oz (I believe this is what I bought it for at Target, but it appears it is now $9.74)

Does it live up to its claims?
Mostly. It does have a luxurious, lightweight feel and silky formula. I actually really love how it feels on my skin and it lasted pretty well on me, even after 8 hours it looked nice and I didn’t feel I needed more than a touch up on my t-zone.

That said, unfortunately the shade selection sucks for me. I’ve pretty much been disappointed by drugstore foundations for my entire life (notable exceptions being Physicians Formula Healthy wear, and it’s still too dark for me) because of their shade selection being too dark, too orange, or too pink. 305 Alabaster is pale with pink undertones. I look like I’m slightly sunburnt with it on in the direct sunlight shots. This is not a look I like on me, which is why I prefer pale neutral or neutral leaning a bit warm for my foundation shades. Now, aside from the color being off, I do think it’s an excellent drugstore foundation on my sensitive, slightly oily skn.

The SPF 10 is definitely not enough for me to forgoe my SPF 30 moisturizer, which I put on every day before I use any sort of makeup. I do like seeing additional SPF in makeup and I applaud the extra bit of effort put into the SPF rating, because I do believe every little bit of SPF helps.

Would I purchase again?
No, but only because they don’t have a pale neutral foundation to match my skintone. I would definitely recommend this foundation to someone looking for a new foundation, provided that there was a shade match for the individual. As it stands, I’ll be gifting this one to a friend of mine who is pale with cool undertones and I’m betting she’ll love it. Additionally, I love the packaging. Squeeze tube packaging for the win! Between the nice, useful packaging, the nice formula and the reasonable price, while this isn’t a foundation winner for me, I think it’s a definite winner for a drugstore foundation.

Have you tried the CoverGirl NatureLuxe Liquid Silk Foundation? If so, did you find a shade match? What is it? If you wear drugstore foundation, what shade are you? I’m curious if most people lean cool, warm, or neutral.

Edit: I contacted CoverGirl, and the neutral shades in the Natureluxe Silk Foundation are Bamboo, Chamois, Oak, Nutmeg and Brazilnut.

Product purchased by me. All opinions are my own.

Can you post a picture of you in foundations before you put blush on?

    • Phyrra March 21, 2011 at 12:53 pm #

Sure! I’ll try to do that.

  2. Shea March 21, 2011 at 12:50 pm #

I had such hopes for that foundation, but the pink won’t do it for me.

    • Phyrra March 21, 2011 at 12:55 pm #

They do have other shades. I did contact CoverGirl and was told that the following shades are considered neutral:
Ivory, Creamy Natural, Classic Beige, Natural Beige, Tawny, Toasted Almond and Soft Sable.

However, the rep didn’t mention what shades in this particular formula are neutral and I’m still waiting on a response back.

This is my go to foundation! In the same shade actually. I use it over the Hard Candy primer, and my pores become pretty much invisible. I guess I have pink undertones (Not that I actually know, I’ve never been able to figure that out!), because the shade blends really well for me. I like the “dewy” look it leaves, too, and it isn’t too drying or oily (I have combination skin).

I was really impressed with this foundation (for a drugstore one) and I think it’s a good one. I’m glad you like it! I just wish they had a foundation match for me :)

If you look at the last picture of me in direct sunlight, the skin peeking through my forehead looks pinkish, as does my chin and other areas, which is where I look at to determine if a foundation is off or too pink on me.

Hmm, I think you would like Sweden because here all the pale foundations tend to be on the neutral/yellow side. And me being super pale with cool undertones can’t find a single foundation that works for me.
It’s good that most of the mineral indie brands have a bigger selection of pale foundations otherwise I’d bee doomed ;)

Yeah honestly I never found a foundation that matched me until I got into indie foundations.

I bet you’d love this one!

I have pinkish skin so I have a lot of good luck with drugstore foundations, unlike you. However, I have your problem in regards to department makeup: they’re often too yellow, neutral, or even orange (I’m looking at you, MAC) for me. I’ll give it a try when I need new/more foundation.

I see what you mean, the foundation definitely makes you look sunburned. In my case, when foundation is too neutral/yellow I look downright ghostly and/or sick. I wish makeup companies would label the tones on their makeup. Kind of like what L’Oreal does with that line of theirs. It would save me so much money, but then again companies probably make a lot of money from people guessing which shade will fit them.

Oh, and since you mentioned them in your review, thank you for turning me to Meow Cosmetics. I just got an order in the mail and I’m so happy with the quality and shades. I’ve used Everyday Minerals and tried out Bare Escentuals, but I’ve had terrible results with BE and I was plain unhappy with EM, since the powder just sat on my skin and looked bad. They almost completely turned me away from mineral makeup foundation.

MAC should have a cool shade, because they pretty much have cool or warm (with the whole NW and NC). For me, MAC didn’t go pale enough. Additionally, half the MUAs would try to match me to cool shades, making my face dark and pink. Le sigh.

Yeah, the sunburn is not a good thing.

Oh! You can now email companies via their website and they’ll respond usually within a week with the suggestions on the shades. I emailed Cover Girl asking what their neutral foundations were and they responded with:
Ivory, Creamy Natural, Classic Beige, Natural Beige, Tawny, Toasted Almond and Soft Sable.

I emailed them again asking specifically about the NatureLuxe line, as I want to know what their palest neutral shade is in that line. I haven’t heard back yet.

I lean neutral/golden and agree with you about drugstore brands, they all tend to be pink in the palest shades. I used to just wear that and think it was fine, but in old pictures I can see it looked like a mask. Only indie brands match my skin for paleness and undertones.
    I especially like Meow!

Yeah, I never like looking at the pictures where my face looks 3 shades darker than my neck and chest >.<

I have the same problem with drugstore foundations. I used covergirl for years and no matter the formulation, I used 110 classic ivory (I think, but that’s the number for sure). That said, the naturaluxe 110 is too orange for me and like you, the 105 is too pink. I don’t know why it’s so different from their others. Maybe one of the other cg foundations in 110 would work for you?

    • Phyrra March 21, 2011 at 8:09 pm #

When I’ve tried them in the past they’ve all been too dark, which is rather unfortunate. I did email them to ask what their palest neutral shade is in the NatureLuxe formula.

I didn’t try the NatureLuxw foundation, but I did try the LipPerfection lipstick that they released with the NatureLixe line. I got it in the color Temptation, a honeysuckle/peachy-pink, and I really like it!

That sounds gorgeous! I love peachy-pinks.

  9. Jessi March 21, 2011 at 10:58 pm #

Hmm, I wonder if this would be light enough and pink enough for me. I’m about as light as you but have pink undertones. And I have the opposite problem with drugstore foundations. Like you I have trouble finding one light enough, but most of them are too yellow for me! I must have reaaaaally pink skin then! Thank you Phyrra, I’ll have to buy this from somewhere with a good return policy!

I was really impressed with this foundation. It looks like you and I are close in color though I think I might be tiny bit darker. I have the same shade and the color match was good plus the formula is really nice. It applies and wears well for sure. I’m worried now though because I haven’t checked it on my face in daylight. I have pink overtones and some blotches and the last thing I want is to look more pink!

Definitely take a picture of your face and neck in direct sunlight to gauge how the foundation looks.

@Jessi I have exactly the same problem with foundation.

I was really in love with and impressed by this foundation until I realized the random breakouts I was getting all of a sudden were specific to the areas where I had been applying this :( The 305 was a perfect match for me, too, damn it

I’m getting ready to review this as well… except I had some kind of allergic reaction to it. I was testing it for over a week and kept noticing tiny hives near my eyebrows and under my cheekbones. Awesome. It’s a nice foundation but I also couldn’t tell if my color match was off or something (I got the second darkest) because it looked funny in the sun. Not too dark, but almost like it made my face look like I had used too much spray tan? I wish I knew what caused the allergic reaction though =/

    • Phyrra March 25, 2011 at 6:57 pm #

Arg, I’m so sorry to hear that.
