We don’t celebrate Mardi Gras with a carnival (too much snow and too cold lol) but we do celebrate Shrove Tuesday by sledding down the snowy hills (the longer you go, the better the coming year will be) and eating buns filled with whipped cream, almond paste and jam. I believe the bun is called semla in English. Oh and eating pea soup on Shrove Tuesday is a tradition too.

I actually didn’t realize today was Mardi Gras until I was reading a reproductive justice blog which mentioned that tomorrow begins another 40 Days of Lies (the organizers call it 40 Days for Life, it’s a nationally-coordinated clinic harassment effort), which originated as following the 40 days of Lent, which meant today was Mardi Gras. I never could keep track of the liturgical year, even when I *was* Christian! So I’m not celebrating, unless you consider grocery shopping, blogging, and getting a new battery for my car “celebrating”!
