Original Moxie Hair Products Review

Recently I had the opportunity to try samples of the hair car line, Original Moxie. Let me just say, I absolutely love the fact that their logo has a peacock in it! It’s no secret I love peacock colors and the silhouette is so cute. Original Moxie was founded by Rachel Blistein, a woman with a knack for creating natural hair products to suit different hair types.

I was sent samples of Get Clean No-Foam Shampoo, Get Fresh! Clarifying Shampoo, Featherweight Conditioner, Mane Tame Weightless Frizz Control, Piece-nik Matte Styling Paste, Straight Up Sleek Control and a full size of Sweet Pouf Volumizing Spray.

Get Clean No-Foam Shampoo
$3 for 1 oz sample, $15 for 8 oz size, $28 for 16 oz size

Ingredients: Distilled Water; Aqueous Extracts of Amla, Bhringraj, Neem, Red Sandalwood, Rosehips, Soapnut, St. John’s Wort, Tumeric, & Yucca; Coco Betaine; Decyl polyglucoside; Sodium PCA; Behentrimonium Methosulfate (and) Cetearyl Alcohol; Karanja Oil; Wheat Germ Oil; Vegetable Glycerin; Mango Alfonso; Banana; Organic Aloe Vera; Phenoxyethanol (and) Caprylyl Glycol (Paraben & Formeldahyde-Free Preservative); Silk Amino Acids; Hydrolyzed Soy Protein; Acacia Gum; Guar Gum; Dead Sea Salt; dL-Panthenol; Vitamin E; Essential Oils of Cedar Leaf, Grapefruit, Lavender, Lime, Litsea Cubeba, & Palmarosa.

Website Claims:
It’s a gentle cleanser meant for normal to dry hair.
It works for straight or curly hair.
It’s sulfate-free.
It remove dirt and build up without disturbing your scalp’s natural balance.
It has no foam.

Does it live up to its claims?
For me, yes it did. It’s definitely a shampoo that has no foam and was gentle on my scalp. While I feel it worked well, for me, I still am addicted to their being some small amount of foam with my shampoo. After using this shampoo, I did feel like my hair was slightly heaver than I expected. The citrusy smell was pleasant. I do feel like  I have to use more product than expected whenever I use a no-poo shampoo, and that was the same for this one.

Get Fresh! Clarifying Shampoo
$3 for 1 oz sample, $15 for 8 oz size, $28 for 16 oz size

Ingredients: Distilled Water; Aqueous Extracts of Amla, Bhringraj, Comfrey, Ginger, Horsetail, Irish Moss; Neem, St. John’s Wort, & Yucca; Coco Betaine; Decyl polyglucoside; Vegetable Glycerin; Guar Gum; Acacia Gum; Sodium PCA; Wheat Protein; Hydrolyzed Soy Protein; Organic Aloe Vera; Dead Sea Salt; HE-Cellulose; Lime Extract; dL-Panthenol; Phenoxyethanol (and) Caprylyl Glycol (Paraben & Formeldahyde-Free Preservative); Vitamin E; Alfalfa Extract; Spinach Extract; Essential Oils of Clary Sage, Katrafray (3% Dilution), Lavender, & Litsea Cubeba.

Website Claims:
It’s a gentle but foamy shampoo.
It can be used on all hair types as a clarifying treatment.
It’s sulfate-free.

Does it live up to it claims?
Yes, it does. I like this much better than the Get Clean because it does have a bit of foam, but not as much as I’m used to. It also has a fresh, citrusy scent. I liked this a lot.

Featherweight Conditioner
$3 for 1 oz, $17 for 8 oz, $32 for 16 oz

Ingredients: Distilled Water; Aqueous Extracts of Amla, Bhringraj, Cinnamon, Horsetail, Sunflower & Yucca; Distilled Water; Vegetable Glycerin; Behentrimonium Methosulfate (and) Cetearyl Alcohol; Acacia Gum; Sodium PCA; Organic Aloe Vera; Sorbitol; Orange Extract; Hydrolyzed Soy Protein; Potassium Sorbate; Polyquaternium-10; Phenoxyethanol (and) Caprylyl Glycol (Paraben & Formeldahyde-Free Preservative); Honey; Citric Acid; Silk Amino Acids; Dead Sea Salt; dL-Panthenol; Vitamin E; Essential Oils of Grapefruit, Spearmint, Sweet Orange, Tangerine, & Vanilla (3% Dilution).

Website Claims:
It’s a lightweight, rinse out conditioner.
It gives you shine, volume and detangling.

Does it live up to its claims?
Yes! This is my favorite product of the bunch. It’s easily the best conditioner that I’ve tried in years. It makes me feel like I just stepped out of a salon when I use it with my favorite shampoo. It’s light on my hair, but my hair feels moisturized and shiny without getting greasy. It has a light citrusy scent as well. It’s supposed to be a tangerine and vanilla scent.

Straight Up Sleek Control
$3 for 1 oz sample, $25 for 4 oz

Ingredients: Squalane; Dimethicone; Fractionated Coconut Oil; Castor Oil Triglycerides; Candelilla Wax; Wheat Protein; Citric Acid; Water; Vitamin E; Essential Oils of Basil, Bergaptene-Free Bergamot, Coriander, Sweet Orange & Ylang Ylang.

Website Claims:
It’s a highly concentrated, water-free glossing pomade for straight styles.
It give frizz control and shine.
A little goes a long way.

Does it live up to its claims?
Yes! When they say a LITTLE bit, they really mean a little bit. You only need the tiniest amount spread over your hands and then lightly run it along your hair to get frizz control if you have straight hair like mine. It took me a bit to figure out just how tiny an amount was needed. It’s supposed to smell like cinnamon buns or cookies. It does have a very slight, pleasant scent.

Sweet Pouf Volumizing Spray
$16 for 4 oz.

Ingredients: Distilled Water; Organic Aloe Vera; Vegetable Glycerin; Sorbitol; Potassium Sorbate; Silk Amino Acids; Sodium PCA; Phenoxyethanol (and) Caprylyl Glycol (Paraben & Formeldahyde-Free Preservative); Dead Sea Salt; Honey; Polyquaternium-10; Irish Moss; Essential Oils of Benzoin, Champa Attar, Tangerine, Sandalwood, Ylang Ylang.

The Website Claims:
It’s a spray volumizer that builds volume while conditioning and strengthening your hair.
It smells like cherry candy.

Does it live up to its claims?
Yes! It’s actually a great volumizing spray. My only problem with it is if I use it then it cuts down the time I need in between washes, meaning instead of having to wash every 5 to 7 days, I’ll need to wash after 3 days. It smells divine.

Mane Tame Weightless Frizz Control
$3 for 1 oz, $21 for 8 oz, $40 for 16 oz

Ingredients: Distilled Water; Flax Seed Extract; Organic Aloe Vera; Wheat Germ Oil; Acacia Gum; Potassium Sorbate; Dimethicone; Guar Gum; Polyquaternium-10; Citric Acid; Wheat Protein; Hydrolyzed Soy Protein; Silk Amino Acids; dL-Panthenol; Essential Oils of Benzoin, Lime, Palmarosa, Rose, Rosewood, & Sandalwood (3% Dilution).

Website Claims:
Liquid Styling concentrate that delivers weightless frizz control.
For fine to moderately thick hair that needs the lightest of touches to look perfectly styled.
Smells woody and citrusy with lime.
This is the ‘Go To’ product for fine hair, from straight to curly, your hair only better, nothing extra.

Does it live up to its claims?
Yes, it’s a pretty nice product, though I prefer the Piece-nik paste.

Piece-nik Matte Styling Paste
$3 for 1 oz, $17 for 4 oz, $43 for 16 oz

Ingredients: Distilled Water; Multani Mitti Clay; Vegetable Glycerin; Acacia Gum; Castor Oil; Behentrimonium Methosulfate (and) Cetearyl Alcohol; Carnauba Wax; Candelilla Wax; Phenoxyethanol (and) Caprylyl Glycol (Paraben & Formeldahyde-Free Preservative); Dead Sea Salt; Polyquaternium-10; Organic Aloe Vera; Wheat Protein; dL-Panthenol; Lemon Wax; Essential Oils of Blood Orange, Fir, Galbanum, Grapefruit, Lavender, Patchouli, Rose (3% Dilution), Tarragon, & Vanilla (3% Dilution).

Website Claims:
It’s a matte styling paste that boosts volume at the roots and adds flexible, all-over hold to layered, piece-y styles.
It’s for normal to oily hair.
It’s got a fresh, clean-smelling scent.

Does it live up to its claims?
Yes! I love this stuff! This is the type of product that I prefer to use to style my hair. I’ll use it on the tips of my hair to hold it in place, or at my roots to add volume, or for a piece-y look.

Would I purchase from Original Moxie?
Yes. Overall, I really like the all natural hair products from Original Moxie. My favorites are the Featherweight Conditioner, the Sweet Pouf and the Piece-nik Matte Styling Paste. The prices are reasonable, the ingredients are good and the results were overall really good for me.

This one is great if you need a light conditioner that won’t weight your hair down.

The products look awesome, I’d love to try them out! Sadly, they’re literally, oz-for-oz, twice the price of what I currently use, not to mention shipping instead of just running out to Target… :-/

Ouch! They seemed comparable price wise to what I paid for Tigi Superstar, with better ingredients, but that’s more expensive than the L’Oreal Everpure stuff I’ve also used.

Oooh. I’m thinking about checking these out! Thanks for the review!

oooh man, I’m hitting this up next week when I get paid! Since I’ve finally embraced my curly hair in it’s natural glory (it took 28 years!) I’m always on the look out for natural hair products free of sulfates and petroleum based ingredients.

I’m also addicted to no-poo. Right now I use a cheap Suave conditioner, but I’m curious how a product designed to be used that way compares.

I am totally entering that contest too since I feel the need to share my curly revelation with the world!

    • Phyrra March 4, 2011 at 2:44 am #

Oh nice! Go with the curly hair :)

Ever since I started using Burt’s Bees’ volumizing shampoo/conditioner, I haven’t been able to bring myself to go back to the cheaper shampoos/conditioners with the silicones and such in them–I know hair experts say that they don’t harm your hair, but my hair has a lot less fallout since I started using Burt’s Bees, so I think it likes the “natural” stuff better. Also, I have super-fine, straight hair and losing any of it irritates me! I just placed an order for some samples; with the $5.95 USPS shipping, the $5 off coupon is a nice perk. Thanks for the review!
