Nyx Eye Shadows Review

I realized that while I like Nyx eye shadows, I’ve never reviewed them. Nyx shadows come in a variety of colors and textures, including matte, shimmer, glitter, metallic, matte with glitter and sheer. They have a variety of colors too, white, gold, brown, blue, yellow, green… all the colors of the rainbow!

Nyx’s shadow types (according to CherryCulture.com:
Shimmer: Sparkly eye shadow with soft glittery effect.
Matte: Flat color with NO shimmer or frost.
Sheer: Hint of opalescent color.
Glitter: Eye shadow with glitter to create bold sparkles.
Frosty: Shimmery eye shadow without glittery effect.
Metallic: Bold colors with intense shimmer.

Shade Descriptions (as I see them):
Pure Skin – matte light beige with subtle gold sparkle
Opal – white with iridescent blue-violet sheen *dupe for MAC Vellum
Kiss in Casablanca – metallic vibrant blue
Atlanta – deep metallic blue
Red Pink – vibrant fuchsia
Sunny Day – midtone fuchsia with silver sparkle
Purple – violet purple with slight blue sheen
Deep Purple – darker than midtone purple pearl
Extreme Apricot – intense reddish coral with an almost fuchsia sheen
Hot Orange – vibrant orange with gold sparkle

The Website Claims:
Nyx shadows have a wide selection of shades from neutrals to brilliant colors so you can create your own eye popping looks.

The Ingredients for the single eye shadows are:
Magnesium Stearate, Talc, Mica, Black Iron Oxide, 2-Ethyl Hexa Palmitate, Silicon Oil, Isopropyl Myristate, Pearl, Polysynlane, Propyl Paraber, Butylated Hydroxy Anisole

The Ingredients for the chrome eye shadows are:
Mica, Ultramarine, Iron Oxides, C.I. Pigment, Pearl Powder

Price:
Single eye shadows are $3.99 on CherryCulture.com & Chrome eye shadows are $6

You can purchase them at Nyx Cosmetics, CherryCulture & Ulta.

Does they live up to their claims?
Yes. Nyx shadows are a fabulous buy for the price point. The wide array of colors means that everyone can find a few shades they like. The texture of the shadows is good, as is the pigmentation for the most part. Some colors are not as pigmented as I’d like, but for $3.99 (or 20% off if you buy from Cherry Culture during one of their many sales they have throughout the year) they’re a pretty good buy. They tend to be as pigmented, if not more so, than MAC, but they’re not as pigmented as Inglot. I am happy that Opal is a dupe for me for the discontinued MAC Vellum. I think there are some real gems in Nyx’s shadows.

Would I purchase again?
Yes. If there’s a color I like, I’ll definitely purchase again.

What do you think of Nyx?

Products purchased by me. All opinions are my own.

I am so eager to try NYX after finding out one of the drugstores here carries them. Those colours look so nice!

      Aww, can you shop online?

  3. Linzy April 13, 2011 at 8:13 am #

I’m a big fan of NYX products. I usually tend to stray from “drugstore” brands, except this one. I really like their Nude on Nude Palette, and the matte creme lippies!

    • Phyrra April 13, 2011 at 6:14 pm #

They make some good stuff :>

I love the look of Opal! So pretty! I just wish my local Nyx supplier carried this colour!

I was so sad… I tried to order some when they were donating their profits to Japan, but they wouldn’t ship to my address, despite having Armed Forces Pacific in the pulldown menu for billing options!! What!

    • Phyrra April 13, 2011 at 6:16 pm #

      Doh! That makes no sense!

  7. Jessi April 13, 2011 at 10:35 am #

The ones you have are so pretty! And really nicely priced, even in comparison to other drugstore eye shadows. I have to have Extreme Apricot, even though it is outside my usual comfort zone. I’m trying to branch out!

I do love them a lot too!
My absolute favourite is Seafom Green but I own other interesting shades… It’s a shame I need to buy them online because NYX isn’t selling them here in Italy.

    • Phyrra April 13, 2011 at 6:56 pm #

What are the other neat shades?

  9. Selenite April 13, 2011 at 10:45 am #

Great colors! Too bad about the pearl powder. They practically de-veganized a lot of their products recently. That darned pearl powder even shows up in the round lipsticks! Their ultra shine lipgloss used to be one of my favorites until they added some beeswax and I think some lanolin derived ingredient. :(

    • Phyrra April 13, 2011 at 6:57 pm #

Doh! I wonder why they did that :(

Well that sent before I was done! haha silly computer. I was going to say that NYX is such a GREAT deal for the prices they have. Their loose shadows are awesome, too!

        They seem like it :)

I just discovered Nyx with a friend and purchased some eyeliners. For the price: WOOHOO! I’m trying to hold back on more eyeshadow purchases, but I need a white and opal looks very, very tempting. :)

I did buy a glitter palette. And I’m not going to lie: it’s fun as no ones business. I may have worn it that night to the movies for fun. ;)

I love NYX eyeshadows!! They are amazing! All of the shadows that I own are very pigmented and last through out the day. Unfortunately they are not shatter proof and I’ve lost a few :(

    • Phyrra April 14, 2011 at 10:09 pm #

Yeah, most pressed are not shatter proof.

    • Phyrra April 14, 2011 at 10:11 pm #

Yes, they do. They’re a drugstore brand, so they tend to have talc and/or parabens.

Sunny Day looks so pretty! I love how affordable NYX can be, good products too. they recently had a good sale on their main site, wish I saw these swatches before then. I only own their black eyeshadow which I’ve heard is comparable to MAC’s Carbon.
