I was thinking the other night about my favorite childhood stories. I think my favorite story that my Dad told me as a child was Little Red Riding Hood. Though, twisted as I am, I couldn’t help but feel sorry for the wolf! This may explain why I love supernatural fiction that includes werewolves and vampires.
I was very excited when the movie Red Riding Hood came out, since it was a twisted version of my favorite story.

My Dad would also tell me stories about Evil Kneevil, a motorcycle daredevil. My Dad raced motorcycles, so it was natural for him to want to talk about the sport that he loved. Some of my happiest childhood memories are of my Dad telling me stories or reading to me, as he did so just about every single night.
So tell me, what are your favorite childhood stories or faerie tales? If you have children, do you read to them?

Hello Cotton
My favorite was Bluebeard, aka Mister Fox or Fitchers Bird. Even when I was small, I liked that the heroine was the agent of her rescue. She got help, but she put it all together & used her head to save herself, rather than passively being rescued by the handsome prince.
Oooh! Cool story
I loved the Hank the Cowdog books my mom read to me – I still read the new books that come out. I have lots of other stories I loved too.

I don’t think I’ve heard of Hank the Cowdog, but sounds cute.
I loved little red riding hood when I was little so I terrifyed that when this movie came out that it would be awful. I thought it was awesome so that is good!

My fav fairy tale is for sure The Little Mermaid, I had a book of the horrible real version where she dies, I still loved it so much. I think because I lived right by the beach and was in a wheelchair so I couldn’t walk that I really identified with mermaids. I still want to be one!

The original story was definitely heartbreaking!
When I was very young I my father used to invent night time stories about ugly princesses with giant ears who lived in towers and scared the princes who came to rescue XD Also at 6 they gave me Cuentos de la media lunita (The half little moon tales) which were funny and a little edgy. My favorite was one were a Cinderella type was made by her fairy godmother to laugh pearls while her mean sister laughed… uhm caca? xD Sounds horrible but the mean sister was really mean. Also the “Janosch tells the Grimm tales” series were really funny. When I was older and discovered the “real” versions of this tales I found them boring.
Btw, I was very cute and had no sisters when I was that age, otherwise I would’ve gotten paranoid about getting send to a tower xD or bad breath.
Sounds like some great stories Marta!
I LIKED THE IDEA OF THIS PARTICULAR RED RIDING HOOD WANTED TO SEE IT SOO BAD, BUT AT THE END WASN’T WHAT I EXPECTED
If you rent or buy the dvd version, there’s an alternate ending
I love fairy tales and collected them when I was a kid. A close friend of the family travelled a lot, and would bring me a doll or book of folk/fairy tales from each country he visited. Have you been watching Once Upon a Time and Grimm? I love that the two series are both based on fairy tales, but each show has a completely different interpretation of the source material.
I also loved the Chronicles of Narnia and all of the books by Laura Ingalls Wilder. I still have the box sets for each series; the Narnia books have been read so many times that the pages are starting to fall out and half the set is held together by rubber bands.
My other childhood favorite was Stephen King. I read Salem’s Lot when I was 10 and was instantly hooked. I consider him one of my all-time favorite authors, and have most of his books. What do you expect from the kid who rooted for the witch in all those fairy tales?
I read the Narnia series and the Laura Ingalls Wilder series. I tried watching Once Upon a Time but couldn’t get into it. Grimm, on the other hand, I’m lovin’!
The Beauty and the Beast was and still is my favorite childhood faity tale. I dont have children of my own but my friend has a 9yr old that my mom and I used to babysitting since she was 3 month old so I told her a lot of fairytails and she love, she is always asking about mithology and ancient legends.
That’s awesome! I always loved reading myths, legends and folklore.
I loved all of the Aesop’s Fables stories. I actually just recently downloaded a collection of them on my nook. I love to read kids’ fairy tales and stories to this day because they really invoke your sense of imagination.

Yay! They were great
My grandma used to tell me personalized fairy tales–she said they came to her in dreams, and always involved me and my grandparents. I wish now I’d had her record them or write them down. They were always twists on traditional tales, but I loved them all the more.
I’ve always loved fairy tales and have recently gotten back into it–whether they are traditional (Complete Grimm) or modern, I just love them.
Speaking of which have you been watching Grimm?? LOVE IT!
I read to my kids when they were little but they would hardly ever sit still….but now they are readers themselves

That’s awesome! Yes I love Grimm!
I spent a lot of time studying the origins of folk and fairy tales in college.
And I grew up to be a school librarian. I adore Grimm. As for my own kids, I love to read a book called “Where’s My Mummy?” to my kids. It’s about Little Baby Mummy as he plays hide’n'shriek with Big Momma Mummy. It’s absolutely adorable.
Aww how cute!
Tam Lin! I remember reading it in an old Childcraft book and was totally enthralled!
I can understand why!
