This is a guest post written by my friend Erin of Dorian & Dahl.
Today I have some swatches and thoughts to share with you on Darling Girl Cosmetics’ new Hunger Game inspired ‘Only One Can Win’ collection. I ADORE the Hunger Games series so I was so excited to get these. All the colors are easy to work with/apply though since most of the colors have sparkles, I recommend a sticky base to get the most bang for your buck. I swatched these over Fyrinnae’s Pixie Epoxy, but Darling Girl has a similar product called Glitter Glue that you should pick up if you’re going to get this set and don’t have a good sparkle shadow primer.
Obviously a Wig
“The height of Capitol fashion can only mean one thing, Effie has arrived! Obviously a wig is a shifting magenta that reflects sugary blue in some lights. For the daring this shade could be worn as a blush or even mixed into some gloss to create a lip color.”
This is totally an Effie shade. It is super pigmented and the blue/magenta shift is quite stunning. Not the most wearable color but I love that it’s lip safe so I might just mix some up with a clear gloss.
“Don’t count out the young tribute from District 11 just yet. Her ability to jump from tree to tree comes from years of plucking apples from the orchards of her home. Sweet and innocent Rue’s lullaby hides a tragic future, a gentle pink which leans more towards coral brightens considerably in certain slants of when it shows the light pink sheen. This color maybe be sweet but pair it with The Final Gift for a daring look.”
At first I didn’t think I’d like this color but it is very pretty and more wearable than you’d think. Though it looks kinda like a matte, the slight pink shift adds dimension. Very pigmented, though when blended out you loose a little of the shift. Still, I really like it.
“Katniss Everdeen was the Girl on Fire, one of the most popular tributes in the 74th Hunger Games. Her intense personality is only rivaled by her expert wielding of a bow and arrow. Fire Inside is a metallic burnt red, it’s rich heightened by the gold sparkles blazing with in. A color fit for a queen, or rather the figure head of the revolution”
When you look at this shade in it’s jar, it looks more like a burnt red but when applied, the metallic red sheen comes out. It is full of gold sparkles and very pigmented. I like the subtleness of the metallic but not my favorite of the bunch as I’m not much of a red shadow wearer. Still, it totally reminds me of Katniss’ gown.
Unlike most, the Mayor’s daughter seems to know something Katniss doesn’t. Armed with a simple Mockingjay pin Katniss quickly learns her place in the Hunger Games. This bright yellow gold could make you into the symbol of the revolution with it’s pink sparkles and metallic finish. Use this on the lid for a daring flash of color or on your lips if you are a bit more of an Effie then a Katniss.”
I think this is my favorite of them all. It is so metallic and the sparkles make this gold less of a traditional ‘yellow gold’ more of a warm rose gold, especially when foiled (applied with a damp brush). Gorgeous.
Boy with the Bread
“Son of a baker, and second tribute to District 12. Peeta declares his crush on Katniss to win favor but the look in his eye says something else. Does Peeta care for Katniss or is it for the cameras? Like his bread the eyeshadow is a warm brown taupe with a blue sheen like his eyes.”
I really, really like this color as well. It probably won’t show up as well with darker skin tones but it’s a wonderful, interesting neutral if your paler. Much more brown than taupe in my opinion but wonderful none the less.
“All of the Capitol goes to District 8 for their clothing. Known for it’s intricate textiles and fashionable clothing their strange designs rule the fashion world. And if you’ve seen how the people in the Capitol dress then you know they’re certainly avant garde. Well Dressed is a strange mix between taupe, lilac and grey with a purple flash.”
This one was tricky. The purple shift was hard to see when I first used this color but when foiled, it really comes to life. Another interesting neutral if you aren’t one for too much color on your eyes. I love using it for daytime looks.
“Coming from a poor District means you have to know how to survive. Whether that may be by hunting in the wilds or simply surviving the Hunger Games our girl from District 12 certainly knows how to fight. This shadow is a blackened bronze that leans towards a plum color thanks to it’s red and gold shimmer. Hold this color up to the light and you can see a red tinge peeking through the bronze.”
ZOMG SPARKLES! So many. So so many. A very beautiful color and if you are looking for a sultry evening eye, this is a color to use. To me it’s more dark bronze but you can see a pops of plum, which I like. I recommend patting the color on though to avoid fall out.
The Final Gift
“Cinna is many things; artist, stylist, possible District 13 spy and friend. Don’t let his simple dress fool you he is insanely talented with clothing design. His concept for Katniss’s “Girl on Fire” made her the figure head of the revolution. This sparkly orange based copper truly glows. Wear this with Fire inside to shine like Katniss.”
A wonderful coppery gold with hints of sparkle. I like that this one is more metallic than sparkly and it is very different from Mayor’s Daughter. This color would work best on warmer skin tones but is amazing as a foiled liner.
“The forests of District 12 are teaming with furry creatures ready to be plucked up and munched on. Luckily there are few who venture beyond the fence to capture them. Gale Hawthorne is one of those few. Much like the woods where he hunts this forest green eyeshadow is brightened by lime green and gold sparkles. This color would be a beautiful crease color if you paired it with Mayor’s Daughter.”
A lovely blanked green that really shines with the lime and gold sparkles. Very pigmented and very sparkly so again, dab don’t brush this color on to avoid fall out.
Choose you’re weapons carefully, whether that may be bow and arrow or javelin may the odds always be in your favor. Songbird Weaponry is a blackened navy with a flighty blue sheen and a sprinkling of gold. Don’t be fooled by it’s sparkles, this eyeshadow is deadly.
This color totally reminds me of the cover of the second book. The blue is very rich an regal and the gold sparkles make a great contrast. I’m not a big blue shadow girl but I will bust this baby out one date night.
“District 12 is famous for it’s richness in coal, a natural resource the Capitol would kill to have. Many of the young men and women work tirelessly in the coal mines to come how to poverty. The Seam is a taupe-ish grey with an aqua flash a truly unique shade. You could cover yourself in head to toe with this like the past District 12 tributes but I wouldn’t recommend it.”
This is another favorite because I really love that it’s a warm grey (as most silver tone grey’s clash with my skin tone). With turquoise sparkles, this color really stands out. Love it.
“Based on District 3, the district responsible for creating electronic creature comforts like television sets and automobiles for the Capitol. Their unnamed tribute’s expertise lies in explosives which causes much trouble for our hero. This color is a bomb in it’s own right, it’s cool metallic silver finish explodes with a pink sheen. This color would look amazing with Obviously a Wig in the crease.”
A brilliant sparkly silver. The pink sheen is hard to see but it is there. It gives the color a warmer feel look than other silvers. A great inner eye highlight for sure.
All in all this is a really great, solid collection. There is a color for everyone and every color is something you should own. You can buy it at Darling Girl’s online shop. Petit jars are $2.25 and full size jars are $5.50. You can pick up the whole set for $63.67, a petit set for $28.57 or a sample set of all twelve colors for $8.40.
I’m already counting down the days to the movie and my premier look. What colors would you wear for the opening?

Oh gosh, these are so gorgeous. Obviously A Wig is my favorite. Effie would go ga ga over that shade! Beautiful swatches!
Erin did an amazing write up and awesome swatches
Incredible swatches and I think the names are quite suiting, too, my fave is Boy With The Bread, name-wise.
Yeah that one is gorgeous!
Ok.Now I must have the makeup AND the Hunger Games polishes too! (tosses another quarter in the piggy bank)
So many Hunger Games collections!
Oh, these are just gorgeous! I’m going to have to pick some up.
Susan did a great job!
What’s their website? I can’t find it anywhere but I may be blind this morning.
I think it’s http://darlinggirlcosmetics.ecrater.com/category.php ? the site confused me at first.
Oops! Sorry! I forgot to add a link.
Thank you! I ended up buying the whole set!
Love the Hunger Games. That being said, I really like Mayor’s Daughter and Fire Inside. They all look beautiful under the flash though.
I need to read the books! Oooh I would love to see you do a look with those colors.
These colors look so pretty! Will definitely need to buy these soon.
Glad you like them Alishia!
The way you did these swatches is amazing! Super clear and vibrant!
These are Erin’s swatches
Gorgeous colors. I feel like I’m the only one who hasn’t read this series. I haven’t been interested because it sounded like it was ripped off of the manga Battle Royale which I didn’t really enjoy anyway. But I think I’ll check it out because so many people really seem to love this series.
I haven’t read it either, but I know everyone loves it!
THANKS ALL! I really love this set. There is pretty much a color for every taste. :3
<3 <3 <3
Oh! And here is the direct link to the set!
I like the Well Dressed & Rue’s Lullaby shades. I haven’t read the books though, although everyone raves about them.
I’m in that minority too, though Ray says we should read them soon.
All of theses shades look gorgeous! Especially the shade for Effie! I need these. Just recently have become friggin obsessed with the series of books and I can’t wait for the movie!!
The movie is out soon, if not now, I think?
Movie is out on the 23rd. I can’t wait!
Agh this is just ridiculous! I liked the novels although I also have serious problems with them, but now half the mm indie companies are making lovely theme collections… I want basically all the shades from the Shiro HG collection, and at least 4 from this one. Why oh why? >.<
[cuts off the drama and keeps writing on her HG wish list]
By the way, doesn't Boy with the bread look like a warmer base version of Damn Paladins from Fyrinnae?
I think it looks similar, but Damn Paladins is more a taupe?
Agreed, that’s what I meant with “warmer” damn I need to learn how to speak makeupish >.<
As always, thanks your great swatches! Sometimes friends ask me to take pics of eyeshadows and honestly, if I ever get just ONE to show up properly… oh well.
DP is less taupe and slightly darker
Now I’m lemming Mayor’s Daughter, Survival Instinct, and Well Dressed or Live Wire. Lemmings are not good when you’re on a no/low-buy, LOL. BTW, guest editor, I liked how you styled the “DGs’s Description/”My Thoughts” part of the review. Much more elegant than my current style
I know what you mean about lemming! Yeah Erin did a great job!
These colors? O-M-G. I think they fit the Hunger Games way better than the China Glaze collection.
Yeah I think Susan did a fantastic job with her interpretation.
Wow… Songbird Weaponry is breathtaking! This whole collection is so awesome! I love the Hunger Games trilogy… and I LOVE that 3 indies made collections! (Shiro/Venomous/Darling Girl). !
Don’t forget Evil Shades! They have a great four piece collection. can’t wait to get mine!
