Crystal Body Deodorant Roll-On

A while back I picked up Crystal Body Deodorant Roll-On from Walgreens. I’m looking for the perfect deodorant without aluminum in it.

The Website Claims:
Natural Deodorant Protection – Crystal Roll-On™ Body Deodorant is made of natural mineral salts and is completely free of perfumes. It eliminated body odor. Crystal Roll-On™ will leave an invisible protective barrier against odor-causing bacteria on your skin. Apply it after bathing. Its smooth rolling ball feels great going on, while the power of 100% natural mineral salts naturally eliminate odors all day long.

No Aluminum Chlorohydrate | Aluminum Zirconium | Parabens| Phthalates.

Vegan.

Ingredients:
Water (Purified), Mineral Salt (Potassium Silicate), Potassium Alum, Celquat

Price:
$3.99 for 2.25 oz

Does it live up to its claims?
For me, No. I really wanted to love this deodorant but unfortunately I felt stinky after 2 hours. I chose the roll on because I thought it would be the best option of the products sold by Crystal. When I tried the stick, it never really worked for me.

I tried applying it liberally and never really got results. For me, it was akin to wearing nothing at all.

Would I purchase again?
No. Sadly I’m still on the quest for the perfect deodorant. This doesn’t make my list as it didn’t work with my body chemistry.

Wo. Just looked at my deodorant, it has aliminum chlorhydrate. Is it bad for the skin? Usually I only check that they don’t have alcohol!

      • Phyrra

I prefer to avoid aluminum in my deodorant, which is why I’m looking for the perfect deodorant, not antiperspirant.

I’m sorry this deodorant didn’t work out for you. From what I’ve heard, different formulations and scents can work differently for people depending on their body chemistry. I recently switched from anti-perspirant to a natural deodorant and, while the transition was a little bit weird at first, I am loving what I am using now: the Spearmint & Tea Tree deodorant cream from Bubble & Bee. They have a number of different scents in 4 formulations (pit putty, cream, spray, and gel stick). They have sample size of the creams, but not the others, and they also have a deodorant guarantee: if one doesn’t work for you, you can email them and figure out what may work better, and then they will send you a different one for only the cost of shipping. I’ve been shocked at how well it works for me, because my past experiments with natural deodorants ended up exactly as yours did.

I’ve also heard good things about Soapwalla’s cream deo and Lavanila’s deos, but I’m so happy with Bubble & Bee that I can’t envision something working better. Plus, they are certified organic and have absolutely wonderful customer service! (I have no affiliation with them, I’m just a happy customer!)

      • Phyrra

Thank you so much for the recommendations! I’ll be checking out Bubble & Bee. Ray surprised me with 2 of the Mbeze deodorettes (Cruizee and Once Bitten) and on day one, they’re working so far.

    • Deana

I searched for a long time too, even tried my hand at making some. I recently found Arm & Hammer Essentials Natural Deodorant. I’ve been very happy with it, though I will have to reapply when I get home from work if I’m going out. I found it at my local Kroger store.

      • Phyrra

I’ll have to peek at the ingredients for that one Deana. Thanks for the rec!

I’ve been wearing Tom of Maine’s for a few years now. I was tired of that weird feeling I would get with regular deodorants / antiprespirants. I’ve used all of their smells, from apricot to calendula to lavender, usually the perfume doesn’t stay but it works amazingly to prevent odor. It is aluminum free and doesn’t prevent prespiration, but then again, neither did any of the usual antiprespirants when I used them.

      • Phyrra

Yes, it’s that weird feeling under my arms that started just, I dunno, made me have an aversion to it. Yeah deodorants prevent odor, antiperspirants prevent sweat. It’s the odor I’m concerned with.

The roll on is absolute crap. It never dries & feels sticky all day, I tossed it after a week. But they have other products that DO work.

I use the Crystal Body Deodorant STICK. (http://goo.gl/7YF27) I have used the solid “rock” crystal stick for 5+ yrs without a problem. However, I do put on extra before I go to the gym & get a good workout sweat going. But it helps me stay dry all day and it’s never failed me. I would recommend to anyone, including family/friends.

My boyfriend got the deodorant stick and I use it sometimes. I think it works great! My underarms stay wet for a while after a shower, so I don’t need to wet the stick to get it to work.

        • Phyrra

So you just directly stick the rock under your arms immediately after you get out of the shower and it works?

      • Phyrra

I’ve tried the rock and it’s never really worked for me.

You should definitely try Soapwella then. I’m a pretty frequent sweater and it’s the only natural deodorant that works for me. I’ve tried LaVanilla, but it didn’t hold up for me. Soapwella is only on Etsy I believe.

I would check the ingredients before, if, you decide to buy it. The only downside I’ve read is that people were allergic to the ingredients!

      • Phyrra

Oh no! I’ll put that on my list to look at too, but keep an eye on the ingredients.

    • Selenite

The roll on, meh. I stick with the solid crystals. I really don’t see notice a difference between them and the superclinical baby powder shower fresh clear 28 hr protection animal tested deodorants.

      • Phyrra

The clinical strength ones will work for me, no problem but I don’t like how my skin feels after using them.

    • Nissa

I second Bubble & Bee! :) The Spearmint & Tea Tree Pit Putty and the Truly Herbal Spray work well for me. The best part is, they have a Deodorant Guarantee and will let you try a new one for only the price of shipping until you find what works with your body chemistry! The company is highly committed to making certified organic products, and their customer service is top-notch. One of the owners (Stephanie) is a chemist and will answer questions about absolutely any ingredient and/or product you come across outside of their line, and her blog is super informational!

      • Phyrra

Wow, that’s awesome! That’s another vote for Bubble and Bee!

    • Stephanie

Have you tried the LUSH coconut deodorant powder? It’s a little messy and if it’s too hot I usually only get around 4-6 hours of wear, but it’s my go-to winter deodorant.

      • Phyrra

How does the powder work, Stephanie?

    • Quinctia

If you just need a deodorant, I had good luck with Tom’s of Maine. However, it isn’t an antiperspirant, and I had to go back to a normal stick. I mean, it was nice that even though I had a bunch of perspiration under my arms it didn’t stink…but I’d really prefer not to have the perspiration.

      • Phyrra

Yeah You need an antiperspirant to not have sweat. I don’t sweat a lot, so I just want a deodorant.

So I mention getting a stick of this stuff to Stacia on the phone today and she tells me that you had recently done a review of the stuff… I had to come check it out!

I found crystal in my search for an SLS free, Propylene Glycol (PPG) free, PEG free, fragrance free (or naturally scented) deodorant. The crystal stick seems like an interesting product, and might actually work for me. As an antiperspirant, it is garbage, but as a deodorant, it’s supposed to work wonders. That’s what people aren’t realizing going in. With this product, you still sweat naturally, but it doesn’t smell bad. (in theory)

Keep in mind; I have yet to try the product. I’ll give feedback after I try it tomorrow.

By the way, do you know how hard it is to find hand soap and toothpaste without SLS or SLES in it? HARD. They put that stuff in EVERYTHING.

      Love your blog!

      • Phyrra

Yeah I smelled :( I was going for not being stinky. I didn’t mind sweating a bit.

I’m glad you liked the review :) I’d love to hear how it works for you!

    • Winni

Lafes roll on in lavender is the best I’ve tried. And I’ve tried all the major brands of natural deo while I was pregnant last year. Lafes just works. I’m currently testing it on a visit to phx and it is holding up beautifully. I think you can find it at Sunflower market and whole foods, etc.

      • Phyrra

I’ll see if they have a non lavender scent. I can’t stand lavender. It sounds like a great product if it’s working for you on vacation :)

    • Winni

      P. S. my BO got much worse after I had my daughter (damn hormones) and I even tried Lavanilla ($18!!!). Nothing I’ve tried works as well as Lafes. I love your reviews, thank you for them!

I can’t think of the exact name, but Degree has one with sea salt in it. I have overactive sweat glands and while it doesn’t help any better with the excessive sweating it does stay fresh and neutralize odors better than any sport or PH speciality deodorant out there. Plus no pit itches when I use it after shaving.

      • Phyrra

I think I tried the sea salt one and it was ok but it still has aluminum.

    • Ali

There is one catch, you must use it on clean skin. Right after you shower or clean your under arms then use it. If you wait more than an hour to use it, it looses effectiveness.

      • Phyrra

I put it on within 10 minutes. I basically showered, dried off, put on my shirt and then put it on. It didn’t work. I tried it several times.
