Geek Chic Cosmetics Last Best Hope – the Babylon 5 Collection Review

Babylon 5 was one of the best Sci-fi series that I’ve ever seen, and in my top 10 list of best tv series ever. I prefer long tv series to movies, in general, and this series is one of the reasons why. It’s got fantastic story arcs, great character development and inspiring dialogue. Geek Chic Cosmetics created the Last Best Hope, a collection of eyeshadows and a joystick inspired by Babylon 5. I’ve watched the series twice, and am toying with watching it a third time because Dave hasn’t seen it and I feel it’s well worth it.

Babylon 5, The Last Best Hope collection by Geek Chic Cosmetics

All shades are swatched on Meow Light Primer.

It’s so hard to choose a favorite character from that series because they were all so well written. I loved Lyta Alexander and her storyline. Delenn was pretty amazing. G’Kar and Garabaldi had fascinating stories. And of course, Susan Ivanova! Everyone was really multi-faceted and well developed. Another of the many reasons I loved Babylon 5 was its positive portrayal of bisexuals, gays and lesbians. Without further ado, on to the collection!

Last Best Hope Eyeshadows are $5.99 each.
All eyeshadows are vegan.

Touched By Darkness
The Geek:
Londo’s journey was a tragic one. He arrived at the station in a role he did not want, as a means to get him out of the way. When he wasn’t yelling at Vir or being late for meetings, you could find him cheating at poker or hedonistically drinking the night away while watching beautiful women dance on stage. At heart he was a good natured man with a kind soul, but his judgement was blinded by patriotism and fantasies of a bygone decadent era. In his ignorance he unleashed a second war between his people and the Narn, and set the Shadow war in motion. He learned to choose what is right over what is politically convenient, the value of different races, and the true meaning of friendship. He eventually got what he had always dreamed of: to be Emperor… but by the time the planent was his to rule, he no longer wanted it. He spent his last days fighting his Keeper to save his old friends, and eventually shuffled off the mortal coil the way he had always seen it in his dreams. Not at the hands of his enemy like had persistently forseen, but at the hands of his his most true friend.

The Chic:
Touched By Darkness is a highlight white with an ethereal purple glow, jam packed with opalescent and purple sparkle.

My Take:
A pale white with pink-purple glow, and gorgeous opalescent sparkles I see purple, pink, aqua, blue, silver and white. I really love it.

Universal Destiny
The Geek:
Zathras is an enigmatic character, and about a thousand times more vital to the survival of the younger races than he appears. He’s visibly identical to his 10 brothers, and they’re all named Zathras. He’d insist there were subtle nuances to the pronunciation, though… and who are we to argue? I mean, he pretty much saves the universe by following orders, so he can be as odd as he wants.

The Chic:
Universal Destiny is a soft coral-toned peach with a strong, vibrant green shift.

My Take:
This has a peach base with a hint of coral and a strong gold shift. The gold does lean a bit antique so from angles I do see green. It’s complex and gorgeous.

Moonfaced Assassin of Joy
The Geek:
Be it fetching hot Jala, a scantily clad woman, or helping Londo remember the Earth creature with webbed feet that goes quack (Cats!), Vir is the ever faithful and vigilant attache for the magnificent Ambassador Mollari. When we first meet him he is a frightened, stammering young man, trying to find his place in the universe. Often the bearer of bad news, he garnered many nicknames… the best of them being “Moonfaced Assassin of Joy”. Through this never-ending trial of fetch and serve, he found his feet and his voice. He stood up to the evil avatar of the Shadows and voiced his desire see the weasel’s head on a pike just so he could look up and wave at it. And he did.

The Chic:
Moonfaced Assassin of Joy is a pink-toned purple with an opalescent copper sheen and lots of golden shimmer.

My Take:
This is definitely a pink-toned purple that is a bit muted. The copper sheen adds depth and golden shimmer is delicate. It’s pretty.

The Geek:
The Captain was an Earth war hero and a Minbari war criminal. They called him “Sheridan Starkiller” because he managed to bring down one of their biggest ships during the Earth-Minbari War. He began as a jarhead; a military man. Over the course of his existence we watched him wake up, and take a stand for what is right. He lead the entire galaxy to victory over the Shadows, created the greatest interstellar alliance ever known, and ushered in a new era of peace for the entire universe, all with the most wonderful hybrid woman by his side. I think if he could send one message to us from beyond the rim it would be “I died on Z’ha’dum, and all I got was this lousy t-shirt”.

The Chic:
Starkiller is a mid-tone navy blue with a strong powder blue interference and tons of blue sparkle.

My Take:
This is a lovely navy blue with aqua and blue sparkles.

Would You Prefer Ferrets?
The Geek:
Everyone’s favorite Ranger, Marcus served as protector and investigator. He also had a little thing for Ivanova. Maybe a big thing. Snicker. He would have liked that joke. Duty and honor were always important to Marcus, but he was easily and hopelessly distracted by love. His eventual sacrifice to save the object of his affection seemed so unjust to the creator of the series that he was brought back in a short story after Babylon 5 was finished, literally from the dead, so he could find the happiness he so clearly deserved.

The Chic:
Would You Prefer Ferrets? is a warm olive with golden undertones (shift and shimmer.)

My Take:
A rich, warm, olive green with a golden sheen and shimmer. This is spot on.

We Are One
The Geek:
Over the course of his years on the station, the Narn ambassador went through a personal and spiritual metamorphosis. He began as a war mongering, sarcastic, lecherous man. As time progressed we began to see the many layers of G’kar. We learn that he has a robust love of life and even more robust sense of humor. Beneath that we find out that he is eloquent and deeply spiritual. Through his many hardships and struggles to help free his people, he grows into the kind of person with a deep perception of the universe that inspires everyone around him (whether they admit it or not). In the end he frees his people, and frees the man he once called his greatest enemy from the bonds of the Keeper, all while watching newlyweds on their honeymoon with his artificial eye.

The Chic:
We Are One is a deep-toned olive green with strong antique gold interference and gold/copper sparkle.

My Take:
This is a rich antique gold with with an olive green base and gold and copper sparkles.

The One
The Geek:
The One was shrouded in mystery. A being that came from the stars to save Minbari from times past. The journey from the future to the past, from human to Minbari, was a long one for Sinclair. He gladly sacrificed his future to save their past and sent the tools to the future to ensure that things will go as planned. The prophecy is a perfect circle. The One That Was: a Minbari not born of Minbari, who helped save a universe.

The Chic:
The One is a frosty silver with a blue shift and tons of silver and blue sparkle.

My Take:
This shade has such a wondeful ethereal quality to it. I would describe it as having a silvery-grey base with with icy blue sheen and blue and silver sparkles. When I hold it at an angle I see a sheer grey base. Awesome.

The Geek:
The *Unofficial* Interstellar Handbook to the Vorlon Language: Very little is known about this ancient race. They are very technologically advanced, and require an “encounter suit” to leave their home world. Since only one person has ever gone to the Vorlon home world, very little is known about the etymology of their language. Here is what our crack team of amateur Interstellar Linguists have been able to decipher of their language:

Perhaps (adverb): 1. Maybe, 2. No, 3. Yes, 4. Cheese, 5. I would like fries with that
Yes (adverb): 1. No, 2. Don’t you wish you knew, 3. Perhaps, 4. If I feel like it, 5. Why
No (adverb): 1. Yes, 2. I don’t know, 3. I have anger management issues
“If you go to Z’ha’dum, you will die.” (colloquialism): If you go to Z’ha’dum, you will, in fact, die. Horribly.

The Chic:
Perhaps is a warm-toned chocolate brown with a strong turquoise shift.

My Take:
Deep chocolate brown base with a turqouise and gold shift. It’s like taking the UD color Shattered and putting it on top of a deep brown.

Everybody Lies
The Geek:
Security Chief Garibaldi is an everyman. He is a kindred spirit to the working class on the station, and is seen as an amiable confidant. His suspicious nature makes him an excellent Security Chief and later on, a dangerous covert intelligence operative. Garibaldi is one of the stronger people on the station, enduring and over coming alcoholism, kidnapping, torture, brainwashing, and the forced betrayal of his closest friend. In the end, it’s his trust in himself that gets him to where he was meant to be, protecting the Interstellar Alliance. That is, when he isn’t busy watching his second favorite thing in the universe.

The Chic:
Everybody Lies is a blackened jewel-toned lush emerald with lots of shimmer.

My Take:
This description is spot on. Lovely, super sparkly and intense.

All Love is Unrequited
The Geek:
The term “unlucky in love” has never been more apropo than it was for Ivanova. From a bigoted ex-boyfriend, to a sleeper-agent girlfriend, to the true love she was too afraid to embrace before it was gone… Susan’s life was a series of Russian tragedies. Through it all she gained strength and a beautiful vulnerability. When she wasn’t busy making sure the station didn’t go to hell in a handbasket, she was leading a fleet of ships down the gullet of the Shadows. She is death incarnate. God sent her.

The Chic:
All Love Is Unrequited is a blackened red-violet with red and purple shimmer.

My Take:
A blackened base with pink and purple shift. There’s also pink, purple and red shimmer. It reminds me a bit of the MAC Venomous Villains My Dark Magic purple side or MAC Young Punk, though the Geek Chic Cosmetics color has way stronger shift.

Chrysalis – $5.99 – lipstick

May also contain: Iron Oxides, Kaolinite (White Clay), Tin Oxide, Polyethylene Terephthalate, flavoring, Magnesium Stearate, Red No. 21, Red No. 27, Yellow No. 5, Blue No. 1, Silica, Bronze Powder, Sambucus Nigra (Elderberry) Fruit Extract, Flavor
Best if Used Within 8-12 Months of Purchase

The Geek:
Delenn’s role as the Minbari ambassador to Babylon 5 started out pretty easy. Then the station changed captains, the other ambassadors started wars, and the universe descended into chaos. Through it all Delenn remained constantly conflicted but incredibly strong. We thought “Chrysalis” was a perfect name for the JoyStick we made for her character, not only because she had incredibly emotional and dynamic story arcs, but also because she actually turned herself into a half-human, half-Minbari just to fulfill the universes’ designs for her.

The Chic:
Chrysalis is a metallic plum JoyStick with subtle golden shimmer.

My Take:
A lovely plum metallic shade, though I don’t see the golden shimmer.

In my glasses, with only Chrysalis on my lips. Naked face otherwise.

They have exceeded all my expectations with this collection. The colors are all wonderfully complex and have gorgeous shimmers.

Universal Destiny is one of those peach-gold shades that I love every time I wear. They look great with blue eyes.

Would You Prefer Ferrets?, We Are One, Perhaps and Everybody Lies are all awesome and work well together. I love seeing so many green in a collection.

Moonfaced Assassin of Joy and All Love is Unrequited work perfectly together.

All Love is Unrequited, Everybody Lies and Perhaps are such rich, velvety shades.

I really love that The One isn’t a powdery blue. Sometimes these shades turn powdery blue on me and it just seems too hard to wear.

I love that they included Touched by Darkness! I feel like just about every eyeshadow collection could benefit from having a highlighter shade included. The fact that this color is so complex with its sparkles make it really eye catching when applied under the brows.

This is my favorite collection released by Geek Chic Cosmetics to date. It’s made me so nostalgic! I would love to see a new great sci-fi series like Babylon 5. It’s hard to beat that sort of complex story arc and depth of characters.

What do you think of the Geek Chic Last Best Hope Collection? I think it’s more than a fitting tribute to Babylon 5!

      ‘Perhaps’ looks gorgeous to me!

      • Phyrra

It is! I love the greens/golds for this collection.

Those are really beautiful. It is difficult to decide upon just one or two. How does Chrysalis do as far as feathering goes?

      • Phyrra

I applied it straight out of the tube without lining the lips. I didn’t experience feathering but I only had it on for 20 minutes.

I just started rewatching this last week!! (Sadly, it does not hold up well when played on a Blu-Ray player on a screen larger than about 20 inches. And there’s no Blu-Ray version yet.) There are some arcs I like less than others, but any time Londo and G’Kar are onscreen I’m definitely paying full attention. I even have the soundtrack – well, the first one, at least. I got a few of the “episode” discs, but there was too little music and so much of it was the same, that I stopped buying them.

Thanks for swatching these…I’ve ordered about six of the shadows from this set and am tempted to get a few more. Can’t wait for my order to come in! :)

They’ve also inspired me to finally watch this series!

The sound that came out of my mouth when I saw this was not remotely human.

I am a HUGE B5 fangirl – in fact, when Geek Chic did their fan contest awhile back, I did a look inspired by Delenn. So yeah I never buy whole collections but I’m off to go drop I don’t even care how much cash on this thing because I MUST HAVE IT ALL.

*ahem* That is to say, these colors look amazing, and the names are hilariously awesome. And thank you for swatching them!

I’m so happy you like it! Love the swatches!

    • lunableu

This is just a beautiful collection all around. Love it.

HOMG. Babylon 5 is my fave show ever – most of the time when I mention it, I just get a blank stare, seeing that it ended 10+ years ago. Seeing a makeup collection based on it is heavenly! <3 <3 <3
