GlossyBox for June 2012

I received the GlossyBox for June as a surprise a few days ago. The magazine enclosed says Glossy Mag July 2012. This says it’s all about summer and keeping it simple. The look on the cover shows a girl with eyeshadow, mascara, white liner on the waterline, gloss and nail polish. She could also be wearing bronzer.

I received:
Beauty Addicts Mascara in Show Off (price is $20 on their website. I received a full size.)
Wella Professionals Enrich Moisturizing Treatment (retails for $13 on Amazon.com for 5.07 oz, I received a.84 oz sample.)
Shea Terra Organics Ultimate Body Creme (retails for $17 on Amazon.com for 9 oz, I received a 1 oz sample.)
Kinerase Restructure Firming Cream (retails for $62.97 on Amazon.com for 1.7 oz, I received a .24 oz sample)
First Aid Beauty Smooth Shave Cream (retails for $7.50 on Amazon.com for 2 oz, I received 2 oz)
A Perfume Organic Urban Organic (retails for $65 on their website. I received a small sample vial.

While it is nice to receive a full size product in a beauty box, I have to say that I have simply no interest in the First Aid Beauty smooth shave cream and really feel like it doesn’t belong in a beauty box.

I do think that the Kinerase Restructure Firming Cream is a good fit for a beauty box, but this is another product that I have no interest in, as everything I’ve seen online about firming creams has indicated that they don’t actually work. I can appreciate that other people would want to try it to see if they did see results with it.

The Wella Enrich Moisturizing Treatment is for hair. I’m curious about it, but not particularly excited by it. This is because I’ve found my perfect hair treatment with Redken Extreme Strength Builder Plus. With me lightening my hair, I find protein & moisture masks a must.

The Shea Terra Organics Marula whipped shea butter is the sample I’m most excited by and the one that I will most likely use up. I like shea butter and I just tried it on the back of my hand. It feels incredibly smooth.

Next we have the A Perfume Organic scent sample in Urban Organic. I hate lavender. I hate that everyone claims it’s a relaxing scent and everyone loves it. It gives me a headache. I hate that things with lavender scent are the ones most likely to be included in sample boxes. However, I gave Urban Organic a try. It smells like Pine-Sol on me. Do not like :(

Finally we have Beauty Addicts Show Off Mascara. This looks promising and I look forward to trying it out.

Products I’m actually interested in:
Shea Terra Organics Ultimate Body Creme
Beauty Addicts Mascara in Show Off

Products I dislike:
Kinerase Restructure Firming Cream
First Aid Beauty Smooth Shave Cream
A Perfume Organic Urban Organic

Products I’m neutral about:
Wella Professionals Enrich Moisturizing Treatment

Now, let me be frank. I’m deeply disappointed with this box and glad that I didn’t pay for it. I personally think it’s ridiculous to have 3 types of creams in one box! 3! 4 if you count the hair moisture treatment as a cream! It’s overkill! I think the point of a beauty box is to have some items with color in it, like a gloss, an eyeshadow, a blush, something!

I know that people want different things out of their beauty box subscription services. I’m not actually sure that there a subscription services out there that I would be happy with paying for.

As I was curious, I went to go look at the non-USA version of GlossyBox. They received a Dermablend starter kit, a GlossyBox blusher brush, HD Brows Precision Tweezers, BM Beauty Bronzer sample and Caudalie fragrance sample. I’m not sure I would have loved that, either.

I admittedly am very picky when it comes to a subscription service, which is why I don’t have one. I think if you are not picky like me, you might like GlossyBox because the sample sizes are large enough to at least determine if you like a product well enough to buy the full size.

What do you think about the June 2012 USA GlossyBox? Are there any products you want to try?

GlossyBox retails for $21. You can see my inaugural post here.

To the best of my knowledge:
Shea Terra Organics is cruelty-free.
Kinerase is cruelty-free.
A Perfume Organic is cruelty-free.
Beauty Addicts is cruelty-free.

Products sent for consideration. All opinions are my own.

Your Glossybox looks better than mine.  I also received the Wella mask and First Aid Beauty shave cream – both of which I’m not thrilled about, but am at least curious.  Your full size mascara looks interesting.  I received a full size cream eyeshadow in dirty gray which franky looks like a turd in a tube.  I do like the scent of lavender and so I liked the perfume sample, but mine was less than 1/3 full which seems totally pointless especially since it wasn’t a crazy expensive line.  I’m also really underwhelmed with Glossybox’s charges vs. shipping and the fact that the card in this box said “June” and the magazine said “July”.  I had actually been charged for next month’s box before this one even arrived.  They had better redeem themselves next month or this will be the end.

@GirlieReview While I’m glad that I’m not the only one who found the discrepancy in the date weird, it sucks that you hated your box too.

    • PinkSith

It’s interesting that the company sent you a box with MORE and different products than what regular members get.  The old bait and switch me thinks?  I got a full size creme shadow instead of the mascara. The creme shadow is grey and looks like crap on my lids. It’s going in the trash. I would have been happier w/ mascara for sure.

      • http://www.Phyrra.net/ Phyrra

@PinkSith I just think it’s ridiculous to send so many cream products in one box. Beauty to me means makeup first and foremost. I was just like … this box sucks. blah, and  I struggled to find anything worthwhile about it.

    • JessicaTeixiera

Pretty sure I would’ve been less than thrilled with gray eyeshadow too. They sent me their US intro box but all of these sub things start off so well then before you know it you’re paying $20 for a box with tissues + paper coasters in it. So while I liked my first box + would have paid for that one I’m still waiting for a company that won’t disappoint. Not holding my breath!

      • http://www.Phyrra.net/ Phyrra

@jallison I wasn’t even really happy with the first box, either :(

    • Gabrielle_

I wonder if they send creams as a way to keep things neutral, since makeup choices are more subjective.  It’s still pretty silly to send so much cream in one box.  And it’s odd that they sent a mix of natural products and chemical products.

My friend swears by Shea Terra stuff, she uses one of their shea butter cremes that I can’t remember the name of religiously and she has great skin.

      • http://www.Phyrra.net/ Phyrra

@Gabrielle_ I was just like … you sent a SHAVING CREAM? REALLY? WTF. With all the other creams it was just cream overload. I did not feel like this was a good value at all.

        • http://www.outinapout.blogspot.com/ OutInAPout

@Phyrra @Gabrielle_ Honestly, I know you hated the shaving cream, but I totally think it’s probably the most fitting thing considering the summer theme. No, it’s not as glamorous as a hot pink lipstick, but then, not every woman wears that shade (or whatever other shade they might choose). On the other hand, the large majority of women shave a couple times a week atleast, so…makes sense to me.

It does seem like the products were fairly arbitrary though- with a summer themed box, I’d expect bronzers, SPF or after-sun products- I mean, the mascara should’ve atleast been waterproof!

How much does GlossyBox retail for? I like my Birchbox because even when I’m not thrilled w/ the products, I know it was only $10, so I don’t feel like I lost too much!

          • http://www.Phyrra.net/ Phyrra

@OutInAPout  @Phyrra  @Gabrielle_ GlossyBox is $21, I forgot to put that up there.

I love Shea Terra.  I’m getting ready to place a second order with them.  Shampoo bars, their black soap, I also use their argan and green coffee eye serum is awesome too.  I want Qasil soap free facial cleansing herb next…  http://www.sheaterraorganics.com/NEW-Qasil-Soap-Free-Facial-Cleansing-Herb_p_440.html

    • perilouslypale

I have the EXACT same feelings as you. I am all about colour! I have been getting increasingly frustrated with my two box subscriptions sending hand creams every month and hair products I can’t use because I don’t use silicones or sulphates. GAH!

      • http://www.Phyrra.net/ Phyrra

@perilouslypale Yep, I want sulfate free hair products. I don’t like products with a lot of alcohol for hair because they can be drying. Hand creams seem ridiculously inexpensive to put in these boxes.

I love boxes like these but I do not like the price tag on this one!

      • http://www.Phyrra.net/ Phyrra

@geniabeme Yeah this is one of the most expensive subscription box services.

Hi Phyrra! I’ve been reading your blog for a while but this is my first comment.  Thank you for doing an honest review on Glossybox.  I’ve been addicted to these monthly boxes for a while and I kept wanting to try this one out.  Their products looked so promising in their European version.

Anyway, after your review I think I will hold off.  I’m pretty happy with my $10.00 boxes at the moment and I would feel duped by paying $20+ and getting crappy products.

Anyway, thanks again this was super helpful!

      • http://www.Phyrra.net/ Phyrra

@ileana1 The European one looks great! I don’t know why the USA one is falling so short :( Thank you for letting me know this review helped.

I’m reviewing another sample box service tomorrow if you’re curious :)

    • Quinctia

It’s bizarre, I did Eco Emi boxes for three months (which is a variety of organic, self-sustaining products), and I think I got more color cosmetics than most folks do in these cosmetic box subscriptions.  Granted, it was all indie stuff, because of the theme, but still.  I got a couple of glosses, a tinted balm, a regular balm, and an eyeliner over the course of three months…plus everything from laundry soap to loose tea to fair-trade cotton socks to candy.

      • http://www.Phyrra.net/ Phyrra

@Quinctia It sounds like I might actually have liked the Eco Emi boxes.

    • Moxiereviews

I’m so glad that I didn’t subscribe to this. Totally agree that it’s ridiculous to have all those creams in one box. I’m happy to see that the US version has all cruelty free items–thank you for letting readers know and for the review. xo

    • Sandra TK

Wow, there’s a very big difference between the US & Canadian Glossy Box-es. Firstly, ours is $15. Secondly, we seem to get more full size products I think. I wouldn’t be very thrilled with this box either if I got it. Especially not for $21! *bleh*

    • MIRIANV

I got this box and I too was a bit disappointed. I thought that I would at least be getting one of the advertised brands listed on their website. I went the extra step though and notified them that I wasn’t satisfied. For 21 bones i was hoping for more.

I’ve had mine for a week now and have tried the products and this is what i think:

-Shea Terra Organics Ultimate Body Creme- LOVE. I got the mango butter one so the scent is a bit strong, but it feels amazing
-Beauty Addicts Mascara in Show Off- this is alright. I love the wand though and it applies well with my lashes, but the formula is a bit off. I’ll stick to my chanel inimitable intense and use this as a back up in my desk drawer
-Kinerase Restructure Firming Cream- can’t say i care much about this since i’m 23, but i have been using it as a base for my foundation.
-First Aid Beauty Smooth Shave Cream- this was very nice to use, but i couldn’t tell that it was more moisturizing than my usual shaving cream
-A Perfume Organic Urban Organic – i got the god awful lemon scent. went in the trash. i didnt want to risk the bottle breaking open in my drawer.
-Wella Professionals Enrich Moisturizing Treatment – i have fine hair and i really like this product! my hair feels thicker and more volumized and just has a nice texture to it. i might purchase the full size.

lol@ Pine Sol! That reminded me of the time I decided to wear my dad’s cologne to school one day because I liked it so much – my friends kept telling me I smelled like Carpet Fresh…

    • http://polishfollies.blogspot.com/ ShelliZink

Totally with you on the lavender.  It’s a migraine trigger for me, that’s actually something I’ve heard from all the migraineurs I’ve asked.  There’s some scientific reason for it that I can’t remember, regardless, it’s F.O.U.L.

I think I’m with you on the beauty boxes.  I don’t think I’ve seen one yet that seems worth the $$.

    • Sandra TK

That’s really strange. I’ve had chronic migraines since I was about 11 years old – over 30 years – and I’ve always used pure lavender oil for headaches, mixed with peppermint essential oil. It always works for me.
