Makeup Wars Favorite BB Creams

It’s time for another Makeup Wars. This time, we’re talkin’ about BB Creams. I have no doubt that you’ll already be able to guess my favorite BB cream!

Favorite BB Creams

For those of you new to BB creams, they are supposed to have the following properties:

  • Moisturizer
  • SPF
  • Foundation
  • Concealer
  • Anti-Wrinkle
  • Brightening or whitening
  • Nourishing
  • *some also claim to act as a primer
As you can probably guess, they’re supposed to be full coverage. They were originally created to be worn on skin recovering from surgery by a doctor in Germany.
They’re a time-saving multi-functional product. When I had to get up at 5am for work, I relied heavily on my BB Creams It made my skin look flawless. To me, if I only have time to focus on one feature, I want to focus on my skin, so the BB Creams was essential.
Holika holika bb cream
My favorite BB Cream is the Holika Holika Essential Petit BB Cream SPF 30 PA++. I’ve reviewed it here and ranted about bb creams here. I don’t like the glorified tinted moisturizers that most American companies have made.

One reason I haven’t worn my Holika Holika much recently is that I can’t find e definitive answer on whether or not it’s cruelty-free (so that leads me to believe that it is not CF). While I do love the product and it’s certainly a steal at $10 + free shipping, I don’t feel comfortable purchasing it again (though I have in the past).
For a good, cruelty-free bb cream, I recommend the Jane Iredale (though I still need to do a full review on it.)

Not blended, just streaked down my cheek This is what BB1 looks like swatched down my jawline, not blended.
BB1 Blended out Here it is blended out.

Two choices that I haven’t tried. You always come up with things that make me want to go shopping, lol! They look great on you!

        CarleenPruessCoulter Thanks Carleen! :)

    • blushingnoir

I also haven’t tried either of these, but NEED TO because I’m obsessed with BB Cream lol Those shade match so perfectly for you <3

      • http://www.Phyrra.net/ Phyrra

blushingnoir They’re what I would consider ‘true’ bb creams, rather than most of the Americna tinted moisturizers. I’m glad you want to try them :)

    • SilkeSquirrel

I think the holika holika one looks great on pale skin! I’ve seen people wear the Jane Iredale one too and it makes skin look amazing and glowy, but it’s a little bit too expensive for a product that I have to order online and can not test first..
I think I’ll start with the holika holika one to see how my skin responds to it :)

      • http://www.Phyrra.net/ Phyrra

SilkeSquirrel You might be able to find the Jane one at a salon. My salon, Cameo, carries the entire Jane Iredale makeup collection.
I think the Holika Holika one is good, but I’m basically assuming it is NOT cruelty-free, which is why I won’t purchase it again.

        • SilkeSquirrel

Oh that’s a good idea! There’s quite a few nice salons in my city that carry make-up, I’ll look into it :)

I love my Holika Holika BB cream (I use the Peach Girl, though I also have used the one you list), though I agree it’s probably not cruelty free :( The Jane Iredale looks amazing, but I just can’t justify the price. I’d rather go without anything.  I got a sample of Garnier BB cream and there was no comparison with my BB creams from Holika Holika. The Garnier was thin and no wear near as nice wearing as the Holika Holika. And the bonus on the HH Peach Girl is that there is a nice cream blusher in the cap.

I really agree with you about the whole tinted moisturizer/BB cream thing, “glorified tinted moisturizers” is a good way to put it. It’s probably the main reason I haven’t gotten too interested in BB creams. I’m not about to pay $36 for what’s really just a very sheer foundation (looking at the ingredients of many of the US brands “bb creams” that’s definitely all it is), when I can get the same finish by just sheering out a foundation I already own. Too bad the Holika Holika BB cream isn’t clear about whether it’s cruelty-free, especially considering the adorable cat and butterfly on the tube haha

      • thecakepie

Catherine bcf Yeah I found that I was better off buying from asian brands than keep getting duped by american products that were nothing more than tinted moisturizers.

    • SpiceDropBlog

Yeah I use Holika Holika Petit Clearing BB and while I really do like it, the complete lack of animal testing information is concerning.

    • BeautyBlogger

This looks amazing on you. It really brightens your skin and makes it look like you are wearing a full face of foundation – but you’re not. I’ve never gotten a result close to that with any of the Bb Creams that I’ve tried.

    • Beauty411

I haven’t tried alot of BB creams, because like you, many are just versions of tinted moisturizers. The Holika Holika BB Creams reallys gives great coverage, though! Nice find!

    • PrimeBeauty50

Good Gawd woman you have flawless skin!!!! I definitely want to try this now!! BTW, that lipstick is awesome on you!!

    • Marcia beauty info zone

You look terrific in that BB cream. I thought you had a tattoo of Phyrra.net since it looked so flawless. I like my Holika Holika Peach Girl BB and need to review that one.

    • TrippyPixie93

I’ve been wanting to try an Asian BB cream, but I’ve also been put off by the fact that no information on animal testing is available. I have no interest in American BB creams, since I don’t want a tinted moisturizer. (“Allure” magazine recently ran an article on BB creams and called them “a tinted moisturizer that protects the skin”. I wanted to scream.)
I definitely need to check out that Jane Iredale BB cream. It looks nice.

    • BeautyCollegeBudget

Odd that I just did a review on a BB cream. I have to definitely agree with you on the fact that westernized BB creams are total duds. I’m on the lookout for a good BB cream. I might have to try Jane Iredale BB cream.

    • http://mostlysunnybunny.wordpress.com/ Mostly Sunny

Thanks for the recommendation! I’ve always wanted to try something from Jane Iredale, but haven’t really taken the plunge. Maybe I should start here!

    • lyndabriggs

I’m hoping you can tell me what lipstick you are wearing in the photo of you with the Holika Holika BB Cream on.    I love it!!!!!

    • lyndabriggs

I was referring to the top photo  ;)

    • retrodiva

Sounds like it’s a steal at $10! I’m glad to see that there are less expensive options coming out.

    • pammyblogbeauty

That is a nice color on you. I will have to check it out! What a great deal for only $10!

I actually just tried the L’Oreal BB Cream, Do. Not. Want! I plan on doing a review of it, although I’m late to the game on that one.  Personally for me, I absolutely love and adore Missha Signature Real Complete BB Cream. That one actually has a color that is light enough for my skin tone!

    • Brlog

Etude and Innisfree stopped testing on animals as of May, 2013. Check them out if you like Asian bb creams ;)

        Thanks for the suggestion!
