I have a not-so-secret weapon. It’s the Sodastream machine. I’m finally going to share it with you. Many of you have seen me mention on Twitter that I love my Sodastream machine. You may remember my Electrolytenment post where I talked about adding bubbles to my water. It really has changed my life.
I quit drinking soda from a can about three or four months ago. While I love the flavor of Vanilla Coke Zero, I really felt it was unhealthy for me to be drinking the amount of soda that I was drinking. We’re talking 6+ cans a day, and I was stinting myself on water. I decided to make a change and quit soda in favor of the Sodastream. This is when I realized it’s the bubbles that really do it for me!
I use Mio Black Cherry Energy first thing in the morning. I just squeeze out enough to color the fizzy water. Boom! There’s my caffeinated wake-up juice for the day. I typically only have one of these a day. I get probably 20 servings out of a bottle because I don’t use a full serving when I make a drink.
For the rest of the day I use Stur Drinks water enhancers in Lemonade, Orange Mango, Strawberry or PomeCranberry. Stur flavors are very subtle, but they add the perfect amount of flavor to the water to me without being too cloying or too syrupy. They’re also made with Stevia, which I prefer to most other types of sweeteners. This is another huge advantage to me over canned soda, as they’re calorie free and made with a sweetener I like.
Since the price of Vanilla Coke Zero (and presumably all canned soda) has gone up significantly the past few years, I’ve actually been saving money by making my own drinks with the SodaStream. With 3 to 4 people drinking it, we tend to have to replace the carbonator at least once a month. However, the price of the carbonator is only about $16 to get it refilled. I can assure you we spent more than $16 a WEEK on soda, so the carbonator is definitely less expensive!
Because I live in Florida and have hard water, I buy 5 gallon jugs of water for $1.25 each and put them into my bottom loading water dispenser (it has hot and cold functionality, yay). I use this water primarily for my Sodastream, but I do sometimes use water with electrolytes if I’ve been working out or out in the heat. The great thing about the water dispenser is I NEVER have to wait for my soda to get cold, since the water I use is already cold.
SodaStream actually has a ton of flavors available and I tried some of them recently at Chicago BlogHer 2013. The Crystal Light Wild Strawbery Energy Drink is tasty. The Lemon Lime is nice, too! They have a Cream Soda flavor, but I’m not sure if you could mix to create a Vanilla Coke flavor. I really like the looks of the Sparkling Natural flavor line because it contains no high-fructose corn syrup and naturally derived caffeine. I could potentially mix the Naturally Sweetened Cola (made with pure cane sugar) with some vanilla extract. I hope they’ll consider making a flavor like Vanilla Coke Zero with stevia that’s zero calorie!
One of the biggest reasons to love SodaStream is that it’s environmentally friendly. You’re not buying cans or 2 liter bottles, so there’s less waste. I love that there’s no packaging to recycle. I just refill the carbonator and the fizzy water bottles, then use any glass or water bottle in my house.
The SodaStream starter set start at $79.95 on Amazon.com and there are many different sets available. You can get refills on the carbonators from Target, Walmart, and other places.
I’m a huge fan of the SodaStream. Call me a convert! I don’t miss canned soda! I love that I’m drinking enough water and really enjoying it. And I get to have my bubbles!
Have you tried SodaStream? What’s your drink of choice?
