I’ve tried a few different DIY Beauty projects over the years. For today’s Makeup Wars we’re sharing our favorite DIY Beauty. I’m sharing three different types of DIY Beauty with you today.
One of my all time favorite DIY beauty project was creating Obsessive Compulsive Cosmetics Lip Tar Pencils. My OCC DIY Lip Tar Pencil adventure was helped and inspired by both Mai’s tutorial, and two of Koren’s videos (one and two). I bought supplies from TKB and then played with my microwave.
I turned quite a few of my Lip tars into pencils. I only had one not work (the black, too sheer). The rest were fab.
This is me wearing my DIY Nylon Lip Tar Pencil. I love it. It’s bright!
The second type of DIY Beauty project that I’ve done, but I haven’t done in years (since 2008!), has been pressing pigments.
I keep thinking that I should try pressing some of mine, since I have enough loose eyeshadow to paint an entire army. You can buy a pressing kit from TKB with everything needed to press your own pigments.
The third DIY Beauty I engage in is, of course, dyeing my hair. I do this one pretty frequently. Most recently I dyed it Special Effects Blue Mayhem. I’ve got a bottle of Special Effects Fishbowl (hopefully) on its way to me. I can’t wait to bleach up my roots and and get some new, brighter color going on.
Do you do any sort of DIY Beauty? What are your favorites? Please share in the comments below!

It’s been a long long time since I’ve pressed a pigment. Thanks for the reminder. And I love the Lip Tar pencils. Genius!
Mai and Koren came up with them before me I decided to try it after watching them.
Great tips Phyrra! I would love to try the pressing pigments kit – I didn’t even realize they made those!
Yes, several places sell them but I think that TKB offers the best.
I love what you’ve done with the lip tars. I’m lazy as dirt so maybe you could offer a service where you transform them for people hehe
Actually, Mai does offer a service I hate dealing with mailing things out.
I need to try the lip tar pencils. I was going to do pressed pigments for this Makeup Wars, but I couldn’t find the photos I took when I did some pressing last and I didn’t want to redo them!
I need to try pressing again. It was fun in the past.
I have seen the OCC lip tar pencil transformation and of love to try that!
It’s really cool!
I also dye my hair on my own, though I’m pretty partial to SFX. And I recently pressed a whole buncha my pigments and they turned out FAB!
I’ve currently got Special Effects Blue Mayhem in my hair and I’m waiting for Fishbowl to get here.
I used to henna my hair. I don’t , any longer. I went back to chemical dye simply because I am not a redhead at heart. I have a ton of Bare Excentuals shadows that I would love to press into pans and put into Z Palettes. I think that I would use them more often if I did that. I just don’t reach for them, that often in their present form. I get annoyed with the open the jar, swirl-tap-buff , close jar thing, now.
Do it! I had a lot of Fyrinnae & Darling Girl that I love but were too messy to bother with on a daily basis. I pressed them and now I use them all the time!
Yes, you should do that!
The Lip Tar transformations are AWESOME! I’m going to have to try that!
I love it
Fantastic job turning those lip tars into pencils! I’m afraid my beauty DIY skills only come down to depotting eyeshadows
I’ve done that, but not for a long time!
If I made my OCC lip tar into a lip pencil, I’d be a lot more likely to wear it! It sits around for me because I don’t have the patience to figure out how to apply it properly!
Definitely give it a try then
Is there any benefit from pressing powder? I mean, I know there’s going to be less mess from dealing with loose eyeshadow, but other than that?
The color sometimes changes when you press. Basically it’s just for ease of use / less mess.
How do you feel about the new OCC pencils? Like yours better? The only things I DIY are depotting eyeshadows and painting my nails! lol
I’m writing up my review on them currently. They work wonderfully on my lips. Unfortunately, they transfer on my eyes
Totally bookmarking this so I can try the OCC lip tar pencil DIY!!
you’ll love it
I didn’t know you could buy a kit to press pigments. I know it’s not expensive to get the items but that’s so handy.
It really is! It makes it so much easier.
I used to be obsessed with pressing pigments
I really need to do it again
<—needs to get onto OCC wagon!
Yes! they’re awesome!
I still really want some of those OCC lip tar crayons but I just have no need for them until I use the tars I already have.
You can turn your lip tars into pencils, then have both.
This is a great reminder to press my pigments! I bought the supplies ages ago, but just haven’t taken the time even though I think I would use them way more if they were more accessible. Great DIY’s!
I’m glad you like them
I really want to try out OCC
They’re a great brand.
the only pressing i’ve done was when i had powders shatter but when i would mix them, i would somehow end up with a ton of product that wouldn’t all fit into the pan? the lip tar crayons are such a great idea!!! i always end up wasting some product when i use mine
You will still have tons of product left over even if you make pencils
When we get back from Vegas I am SO trying out your lip tar pencils!!
Yay! I think you’ll enjoy it
I like the idea behind lip tar pencils. Wish I can color my own mane just like yours!!!!
Aww it’s fun
The lip tar pencils are so neat. A lot more fool-proof than the original tars!
The original lip tars are great but you need to:
1. prime with Clear
2. apply them precisely, a very tiny amount.
I’ve seen MUAs who hadn’t used them before just glob them on and they turn into a mess.
The DIY lip tar pencils look amazing! I think I like the look of the consistency better than the original, xx
I like that it doesn’t bleed!
Exactly the lip tars are bad for that, I find they even bleed when switching x
ive been thinking about turning some of my liptars into pencils too – it would make my life so much easier
It really is! They’re not as intense when they’re in pencil form, but they’re still nice to work with. The OCC Colour Pencils are nice and more intense.
Hmmm, I may have to try the OCC lip pencil one, but I gotta find the step-by-step instructions! Love yours. I made DIY lipstick/balm from Crayola crayons, a cinch.
I linked my step by step instructions above, but in case you missed it:
Thanks, Phyrra, I missed ‘em! Love your Blue Mayhem hair, too
Wow, that lip tar/pencil idea is really neat, and I may actually try to press some pigments and loose shadows, since I love loose shadows and pigments, but find they can be messy to deal with. I’m curious to see what the other bloggers posted as well, thanks so much for sharing with us!!
That OCC Lip Tar pencil thing is crazy cool! I’ve never heard of that!
I always did love being able to make my own i never knew you could press your own, i did try that crayon thing no one ever tells you to use crayola and goodness the taste of the generic gag! that’s why i love the DIY that you have so much easier!
I am going to have to try pressing my loose shadows.
OMG! i love it! this colors are amazing
