Orange is the New Black Flaca Makeup Tutorial

Orange is the New Black Flaca Makeup Tutorial

Today I’m happy to share with you my Orange is the New Black Flaca Makeup Tutorial. I chose Flaca (Marisol Flaca Gonzales, played by Jackie Cruz) because she’s quirky and a little gothy. She wears thick, dark liner with little tears at the corner of both eyes. She’s got a thick fringe of bangs, which I like. Flaca loves the Smiths, Depeche Mode and Morrisey, which is music I like too.

My makeup was inspired by her office look. I’m pretty sure that for that episode she used her black eyeliner to line her lips and followed up with red lipstick on top. Aside from her office look, I think she normally doesn’t appear to wear lipstick in the show. From reading an interview with Jackie Cruz, I know the actress never goes out without some lip color.

People speculate that she wears the tear drops because she lost someone or killed someone, etc. However, I’m going to go out on a limb and say she wears tear drops because she feels they’re gothy and they make her stand out. Alternatively, she read the comic Dawn, and liked Dawn’s tear drops, but wanted to do her on twist on things. Flaca seems to like to do things differently than everyone else.

Lips

  • OCC Colour Pencil in Tarred (vegan) – outer lips
  • OCC Colour Pencil in Black Dahlia (vegan) – middle of lips
  • OCC Colour Pencil in NSFW (vegan) – center of lips
  • Too Faced Melted Lipstick in Melted Ruby (vegan) – on top of it all

If I were doing the lips over again, I would just use OCC Tarred pencil and top it with Too Faced Melted Ruby. I think that would be closer to Flaca’s lips.

I’m wearing no foundation, thanks to my Mirvaso medication. I have to admit, I am REALLY enjoying not wearing foundation, though I should probably use concealer under my eyes. I’m trying to get comfortable in my own skin again. I’ve had Mirvaso last anywhere from 6 to 12 hours. Once it wears off, my face gets slightly flushed, but it’s not painful and it’s not worse than my rosacea usually is. I’m still using my metrogel cream in addition to Mirvaso.

Great tutorial. Love the lip color.

      • http://www.phyrra.net/ Phyrra

Thank you Aleya! I think the much easier way to do the lip, and be more accurate to the tv show, would be to have just done OCC Colour Pencil in Tarred to line the lips, then just filled in with Too Faced Melted Ruby Melted Lipstick. None of the 3 shading that I did.

Your skin looks super nice with Mirvaso!

      • http://www.phyrra.net/ Phyrra

Thank you! I’ve always had makeup artists tell me I have great skin, but I never feel that way because of my rosacea. With my rosacea ‘hiding’ because of the Mivaso medication, I like my skin.

      That’s a very interesting look.

Interesting. Are those supposed to be tears?

      • http://www.phyrra.net/ Phyrra

yes. she wears tears at the corner of her eyes. I explained my theory on the tears above

    • Noelle

I absolutely love this so much! You knocked it out of the park!

      • http://www.phyrra.net/ Phyrra

Thanks! I like everything but the tears :)

    • marciaf

Love the lips but the teardrops make me crazy. As long as you don’t wear them in real life I’ll be okay with it though.

      • http://www.phyrra.net/ Phyrra

If I were doing tears for going out, I’d do them more Dawn style, towards the center underneath my eyes, not in the corner. Or I’d do an eye of Horus design

    • Cindy Ingalls

You nailed the look. I loved that “dress for success” episode–Flaca’s outfit was cute!

I would assume her teardrops are meant to be the common prison tatt – which according to Wikipedia is …. “The tattoo can have several meanings, including signifying the number of years spent in prison, the number of times they were raped while incarcerated, or the fact that the wearer has killed someone.”

      • http://www.phyrra.net/ Phyrra

I saw an interview with the actress who said that her character likes to stand out, which leads me to speculate the tears aren’t for the normal reasons.

    • LittleMonsterx14

      You nailed her look!

      • http://www.phyrra.net/ Phyrra

Thank you! I watched the episode twice to make sure I was getting things right.

OMG, you nailed it! And it looks pretty, oddly enough. I still like dark lips like that, especially in the Fall/Winter. We’d call them Chola lips!
