My Big Eye Shadow Primer Comparison V2.0

My Big Eye Shadow Primer Comparison V2.0

This post has been a long time in the making! In the original primer comparison I did back in November 2009, I compared 7 primers. In this one, I’ve done 10. Overall, let me preface this with these are all primers I think people love to use. (If you’re looking for my Shadow Transformation Comparison, aka Fyrinnae Pixie Epoxy vs. Sobe Botanicals Stick It vs. Hi-Fi High Impact vs. Medusa’s Makeup the Fix, it’s here.)

The 4 eye shadow colors chosen for this comparison are:

MAC Satellite Dreams – deep dirty plum with violet/blue reflects (veluxe pearl)
Meow Sexy Time – luscious sinful brilliant lime with teal sparkle
Fyrinnae Rapunzel Had Extensions – stunning golden pink peach
Aromaleigh Late for Work – vivid deep cornflower blue luster with sparkles of blue and green

First Day of Testing UD’s Eden Primer Potion

First Day of Testing UD’s Eden Primer Potion

So I have to say, my initial impression of Urban Decay’s Primer Potion in Eden is positive! Unlike my attempts with the original UDPP, I had very minimal creasing with Eden when worn today. I even wore it with Urban Decay shadows, to see how it was supposed to perform.

From 8:30 am this morning:

11:22 am this morning:

2 pm this afternoon:

4 pm this afternoon:

6:30 pm this evening:

As you can see, there’s really just minimal creasing, which isn’t bad. I get less with Too Faced Shadow Insurance, but this is by far heads and tails better than UDPP ever performed on me. I’m going to keep testing Eden to see how it does for vibrancy etc, and then do a new Big Primer Comparison.

What do you think? Have you tried Eden yet?

My Big Primer Comparison

My Big Primer Comparison

I decided to do a comparison of 7 products used as primers. You can find my previous primer comparison here.

Now, these are products that I think a lot of people use as primers, so I wanted to compare how they work on me.

These are the three eye shadow colors that I used for the comparison:
Meow Eerie – bright purple with blue iridescence and blue sparkle
Aromaleigh Bluespark – bright peacock blue with a literal dollop of blue sparks
Morgana Druscilla’s Sister – very hot pink with a violet sheen & twinkles of turquoise

Let me show you what all the primers look like on my skin.

Now, let me show you how the eye shadows look on the primers. I applied the eye shadows using cotton swabs and dabbing directly onto the primer. I tried to pack the color onto each primer.

This is indoors, with flash.

Aromaleigh Eye & Lip Primer – easy to use jar
MAC Paint Pot in Bare Study – easy to use jar
Urban Decay Primer Potion – cute bottle shape but a complete pain to get all the product out, lots of product waste
Cream Eye Shadow in White – easy to use jar

I really prefer the squeeze tube or the easy to use jar, because you can get every bit of product out of the containers.

Now, on to my observations on how these primers work on me and appear to work to me.

Most Vibrant Primers:
Too Faced Shadow Insurance, Detrivore Primer, Aromaleigh Light Primer, Urban Decay Primer Potion

Primers that seem truest to color:
Too Faced Shadow Insurance, Detrivore Primer, Aromaleigh Light Primer, Urban Decay Primer Potion

Primer that seemed worst:
Cream Eye Shadow in White

Primers that seemed to dull color:
Aromaleigh Eye & Lip Primer, MAC Paint Pot in Bare Study, Cream Eye Shadow in White

Primer that I normally use for swatching:
Aromaleigh Light Primer

Primers that crease on me:
Urban Decay Primer Potion
Cream Eye Shadow in White

Primers that sometimes crease on me:
Aromaleigh Light Primer-I can sometimes get this to not crease if I apply by tapping it on, which takes extra time.
Detrivore Primer-this does not crease if I put Too Faced Shadow Insurance on first.

Primers that never crease on me:
Too Faced Shadow Insurance
MAC Paint Pot in Bare Study
Aromaleigh Eye & Lip Primer

Pricing:
Too Faced Shadow Insurance – $17.00 for .35 oz of product
Detrivore Primer – $6.00 for 5 gm net weight (might be .17 oz)
Aromaleigh Light Primer – $9.50 for 5 gm net weight (maybe .17 oz)
Aromaleigh Eye & Lip Primer – $10.00 for 3 gm net wet (maybe .11 oz)
MAC Paint Pot in Bare Study – $16.50 of .17 oz of product (in 5g jar)
Urban Decay Primer Potion – $16.00 for . 34 oz of product
Cream Eye Shadow in White – $6.95 for .11 oz of product (in a 3g jar)

The Price Per Ounce:
(This is the price per ounce assuming my estimations above are all correct.)
Too Faced Shadow Insurance $48.57
Detrivore Primer – $35.29
Aromaleigh Light Primer – $55.88 (25% off would be $41.91)
Aromaleigh Eye & Lip Primer – $90.91 (25% off would be $68.18)
MAC Paint Pot in Bare Study – $97.06
Urban Decay Primer Potion – $47.06
Cream Eye Shadow in White – $63.18

Both of the Aromaleigh Primers can be purchased at 25% off if you wait for Aromaleigh to have a sale on them. I’m actually pretty surprised by how expensive the Cream Eye Shadow, MAC Paint Pot and Aromaleigh Eye & Lip Primer turn out to be.

For the record, while I don’t have oily skin, my eyelids and eye area seem to be very oily. I believe that this is the reason that some primers just don’t work well for me.

The Detrivore primer actually seems to be the most vibrant, with Too Faced Shadow Insurance & Aromaleigh Light Primer very close to it in terms of vibrancy.

The Detrivore primer and the Aromaleigh Light Primer seem to have the same texture, and unfortunately both crease on me if I don’t spend extra time on them. I am able to get the Detrivore to not crease by using Too Faced Shadow Insurance under it. I can get the Aromaleigh Light Primer to not crease by tapping it lightly onto my lid. However, I always end up having to take extra time to carefully tap Aromaleigh Light Primer onto my lid and it takes me longer than my TFSI.

One of the reasons I love Too Faced Shadow Insurance, and to a lesser extent MAC Paint Pot in Bare Study and Aromaleigh Eye & Lip Primer, are that I can just easily and quickly apply them and I don’t have to worry if I get a tad too much on, because it won’t crease.

My favorite primer is still Too Faced Shadow Insurance. It’s the easiest one for me to use. I can just apply it and go. It’s pretty vibrant and colors last all day on me without creasing.

However, you can see that Detrivore and Aromaleigh Light Primer are very, very good primers, especially if you don’t have problems with oily lids and creasing like I do.

Urban Decay Primer Potion appears to be a pretty good primer, BUT I absolutely hate the waste from the bottle. Having to cut that sucker open to get out primer is not appealing to me. What surprises me is that it’s not as vibrant as Too Faced Shadow Insurance, Detrivore or Aromaleigh Light Primer. I know so many people who prefer UDPP to anything else that it’s surprising because of my results from this comparison.

Aromaleigh Eye & Lip Primer is nice because of its multipurpose uses. It does work pretty well on the lips with lipstick and I really prefer it for that use. The MAC Paint Pot is nice because you can use it as an eye shadow if you like.

If I was asked to recommend primers I would recommend:
Too Faced Shadow Insurance
Detrivore
Aromaleigh Light Primer
Aromaleigh Eye & Lip Primer

What do you think?
Which do you use?
Which would you like to try?

Too Faced Shadow Insurance – A Necessity for Me

Too Faced Shadow Insurance – A Necessity for Me

I put my Too Faced Shadow Insurance through a real test yesterday. Yesterday I went to Disney’s Magic Kingdom, Epcot and the recently renamed Hollywood Studios with my family (because my in-laws are in town). I used TFSI with my eye shadow to keep it in place all day, and it did not disappoint. This lasted in 80+ degree weather, with me running around like crazy.

I wore:

Eyes:
Too Faced Shadow Insurance
Fyrinnae Rapunzel Had Extensions – all over the eye area
Aromaleigh Gel Eyeliner in Black Out – upper lash line
Urban Decay 24/7 liner in Zero – lower water line

Face:
Fyrinnae Mica Free Foundation in Moonstone

Lips:
Fyrinnae Glitter Kittiez Lip Lustre

The 24/7 eyeliner smudged a little bit under my eye. The Black Out didn’t move. The eye shadow didn’t budge. The Lip Lustre lasted pretty well throughout the day. I only touched it up twice.

After running around all day, my foundation still looked relatively good, and only needed a minor touch up before dinner. I was running around the parks from 9am until 9pm, when I took off to come home.

This is why TFSI is one of my must haves for eye shadows. It works the best for me out of all of the products that I’ve tried as an eye shadow primer. I feel like other products are definitely good, and may be better for other people, but this is the one that works the best for me. You can see what other eye shadow primers I’ve reviewed here.

I’m super impressed at the fact that I had no creasing with my eye shadow after being out in the heat all day. No other primer I’ve tried has been able to do that.

What is your necessity with makeup?
What works best for you?

Comparison of Too Faced Shadow Insurance, Urban Decay Primer Potion, Aromaleigh Eye Shadow Primer, and Mac Paint Pot

Comparison of Too Faced Shadow Insurance, Urban Decay Primer Potion, Aromaleigh Eye Shadow Primer, and Mac Paint Pot

Today I’m reviewing and comparing 4 different eye shadow primers.
I’m reviewing MAC Paint Pot (Bare Study), Aromaleigh Eye Shadow Primer, Urban Decay Primer Potion, and Too Faced Shadow Insurance.

The Primers
1. MAC Paint Pot in Bare Study
2. Aromaleigh Eye Shadow Primer
3. Urban Decay Primer Potion (I only have the travel size that came with the sustainable shadow box set)
4. Too Faced Shadow Insurance

Pricing:
1. MAC Paint Pot is $16.50 of .17 oz of product
2. Aromaleigh Primer is $9.50 for 5 gm net weight (not sure what the oz of product would be, maybe .17 oz)
3. Urban Decay Primer Potion is $16.00 for . 34 oz of product
4. Too Faced Shadow Insurance is $17.00 for .35 oz of product

Container Design:
1. MAC Paint Pot - a nice twist the lid off jar. It’s heavy, and won’t easily break. It’s easy to get all the product out, so there is no product wasted. A single jar has lasted me over a year with everyday wear
2. Aromaleigh Primer – Has a twist off top in a lightweight container. It might dent easily. It’s easy to get all the product out, so there is no product wasted. A single jar can last someone 9 months to 12 months
3. Urban Decay Primer Potion – really cute genie bottle design. However, it’s a pain to get all of the product out, unless you saw the thing in half! There is a LOT of product wasted with this design. It seems like 1 bottle would last you 6 to 8 months
5. Too Faced Shadow Insurance- Great tooth paste bottle design. Easy to get every last drop of product out. I would guess it lasts 8 to 10 months

I REALLY dislike the Urban Decay Primer Potion Bottle.
I really Like the Too Faced Shadow Insurance bottle.

The MAC Paint Pot and Aromaleigh Eye Shadow Base are in containers that I’m used to and I find them easy to work with.

2. Aromaleigh Eye Shadow Primer

(+/-): Mica, Bismuth Oxychloride (CI 77163), Titanium Dioxide (CI 77891), Iron Oxides (CI 77491, CI 77492, CI 77499).

Now, here are the eye shadow colors I used:
Eye Shadow Colors Used:
A. Ice Melt
B. Little Gremlin – this looks like Pure Hues Peony to me
C. Urban Decay Asphyxia
D. Aromaleigh BodyElectric
E. Aromaleigh Bette

Here are some outdoor swatches, no flash.

1. MAC Paint Pot 2. Aromaleigh Eye Shadow Primer 3. Urban Decay Primer Potion 4. Too Faced Shadow Insurance

This is indoor with natural light, no flash, by a window.

These are indoor with flash.

When I was waiting for these to stay on my skin for about a half hour, Dave asked what I was doing, so I explained to him.
I asked him which sections he thought were the most vibrant. He chose 2 (Aromalegh Eye Shadow Primer) and 4 (Too Faced Shadow Insurance)
I was pleasantly surprised, as they were my choices as well.

Now, in Urban Decay Primer Potion’s defense, I’ve only had the travel size bottle, not the full size bottle. I decided I woudn’t buy a full size botte until they updated the packaging to a better design that I didn’t have to saw in half to get product out.

However, Too Faced Shadow Insurance comes out in 1st place in this review for me. It applies a bit more liquidy than the others, but it seems to work the best on me. MAC Paint Pot is the easiest for me to work with since I’ve been using it the longest. With UDPP I never knew if I used too much or not enough and I would end up with creasing. The Aromaleigh Eye Shadow Primer is pretty good, as it feels like a balm when applied. I sometimes was concerned that I used too much because I’d end up with creasing, but I wasn’t alway sure if that was the case.

For the best prices and product, I would recommend Aromaleigh and Too Faced Shadow Insurance.

For multipurpose use, I think TFSI and the MAC Paint Pots win that, as TFSI can be used as concealer, and so can the right shade of MAC Paint Pt.

Until the UDPP bottle is redesigned to where you won’t waste a bunch of product, I can’t in good conscience recommend it. I also found that, at least with the travel bottle I have, it does not do as good of a job on my skin as TSFI does.

I didn’t realize how much Bare Study would change my eye shadow colors, but Aromaleigh’s E/S primer makes them pop and TFSI really makes them sing!

What do you think of my review?
Which do you choose?
Or do you have them all?
