October’s New Haircut

October’s New Haircut

I got my hair cut today at Cameo Salon & Spa by an awesome lady named Lori and her stylist in training Sara. I told her I wanted to keep my length, I wanted layers to add volume, and I wanted a fringe. I told her I liked asymmetrical cuts and points, and I showed her a few images I had looked at for inspiration.

I’m pleased with the results.

(I wish Dave had told me it wasn’t straight in the back when he took a picture for me!!!)

Phaedra approves!

I really love how this works with my eyes.
Of course, the color is what I’ve had for a few weeks, Punky Plum and Manic Panic Atomic Turquoise. I like how Lori was able to incorporate my Turqoise panel into the look.

Edited to add:

The above image is what I used as the basis for my cut. It’s what gave me the idea of what I wanted.

Adventures in DIY Hair: Extensions & Dye

Adventures in DIY Hair: Extensions & Dye

You may have noticed a change in my hair. I took out my extensions after they’d been in for just over 2 weeks.

Friday night I removed my extensions with Proclaim Super Bond Remover Oil, which you can purchase at Sally Beauty.

They were applied with Proclaim Dark Super Bond Hair Glue.

While the Remover Oil removed the extensions pretty easily, I had to use the oil in my hair several times and shampoo several times to get all of the glue out of my hair. I ended up using Batiste Blush Dry Shampoo to soak up some of the excess oil.

On Saturday, I went to Ulta and while picking up stuff there, I also picked up 2 jars of Punky Color Cream in Plum. This is a GORGEOUS color.

On Sunday, I applied Manic Panic Atomic Turquoise to my blue bangs section of hair. Then I applied Punky Plum to the rest of my hair. I covered the hair and let it sit in my hair for about 4 hours. Since I had foiled the turquoise section so that no purple would get on it, I rinsed out the purple first, then did the turquoise last. I ended up with my body purple-tinged, so I looked like a World of Warcraft Night Elf!!!

I definitely recommend having help with putting in glue-in extensions or taking them out. While I could easily take out small extensions, like the piece that was on my front left side of my hair, getting out the wide strips in the back required help from Dave, since he could easily see where to apply the oil to gently dissolve the glue and remove it from my hair without pulling my hair out.

Be prepared to lose some hair!
In the process of dissolving the glue to remove it from your hair, you will also lose some hair. This is hair that you would normally lose on a daily or weekly basis when you brush or comb your hair.

Don’t panic!
I panicked and thought my hair was falling out, then realized it wasn’t really that much hair, and probably just about 2 weeks worth of hair that needed to come out. If I had realized this at first, I would not have had a panic attack. :P

Right now, the turquoise extensions that you see in my hair are from Hot Topic, and they’re very tiny, but cute. They’r80% modacrylic, 20% PVC. They can be curled, crimped, straightened or blow dried.

You can get some great extensions from I Kick Shins.

Or, you can make some extensions in the following way:
1. Buy some platinum blonde human hair wefts (commonly called yaky), which look like the ones pictured here
2. Buy some hair dye, such as Punky Color or Manic Panic and wig clips
3. cut your wefts of hair up into sections.
4. Put your oven temperature at 200 and let your oven heat up
5. get a baking sheet and put foil over it
6. apply hair dye to your wefts of hair, fully saturating the hair on both sides
7. let your hair bake for a half hour to an hour, checking on the hair
8. once the hair is dyed, let it dry
9. then flat iron the hair
10. sew the hair onto the wig clips
11. cut the hair the way you like it, or wear it just as it is.

I may do a tutorial on how to make your own extensions if this post receives enough comments and people are interested.

Adventures in DIY Hair: Extensions

Adventures in DIY Hair: Extensions

My friend Lauren wanted to put extensions in my hair, and since I’ve never had it done, I said ok!She said if I didn’t like it, we could take the tracks out with baby oil. So we went and purchased some hair from a local beauty store. We purchased human hair, which is called yaki. I purchased 12″ purple and 14″ dark brown. We also had some blonde pieces that were 12″ that we dyed the following colors: Manic Panic Atomic Turqouise, Jazzing Jet Grape, Beyond the Zone Passion Purple, and Manic Panic Ultra Violet.

We baked the blonde pieces with color, and 2 pieces of the dark brown with purple applied to them in the oven on a cookie sheet covered in foil at 200 degrees for a while. Once they were done ‘cooking’ we flat ironed those pieces of hair. The color turned out beautiful on them.

After that, Lauren put the hair into mine, working her way up from the bottom of my hair.

Here’s what my hair looked like before:

Here’s what my hair looks like now:

I’m very happy with it! The tracks don’t itch and it feels so soft and silky and the color looks so vibrant :)

Ravens Hair

Ravens Hair

I have been craving change with my hair. I saw this picture and got inspired.

This reminds me of a Ravens or Peacocks. I love it :)

So I went to Sally’s and bought the following dyes and a bleach kit.

Manic Panic Atomic Turquoise
Manic Panic Ultra Violet
Beyond the Zone Purple Passion
N’Rage Blue-Black (2 bottles)

Ray helped me get the bleach in, and later the dye.
We foiled at an angle from the right side of my head towards the back left side.
The first foil was Atomic Turquoise. The next was Ultra Violet.
Then we did Purple Passion. Then Ultra Violet.
Then we did 2 smaller Atomic Turquoise sections.
The rest of my hair we dyed Blue-Black. It took just about all of the 2 bottles of Blue-Black to do the non-colored pieces.

Here’s my before picture.

Here’s me after washing the bleach out of my hair.
I bleached the top part of my hair and most of the Raspberry Kamikaze out of my side pieces.

I left the dye in for about 3 hours, which is what I typically do with Manic Panic type dyes (I’ll leave it in for anywhere from 2 to 6 hours since they’re vegetable dyes). The colored sections were all foiled, and the blue-black was left alone. I rinsed out all of the blue-black first, and once I was satisfied it had all been rinsed out, I then took out the foils and rinsed out the colored sections.

And here are the after shots:

Flexi-8 Hair Clips Review

Flexi-8 Hair Clips Review

Ok, now that I’ve had quite a while to play with my Flexi-8 hair clips, I can say wholeheartedly that I love them!

They are extremely well-made hair clips that come in 6 sizes:
Mini size – 2 inch – $10 to $15.95
Extra Small – 2 3/4 inch – $12 to $20.95
Small – 3 1/4 inch – $13 to $20.95
Medium – 3 3/4 inch – $14 to $20.95
Large – 4 1/4 inch – $15 to $20.95
Extra Large – 5 1/4 inch – $19 to $24

I received 4 sizes to review: the Mini, Extra Small, Small and Medium.

These hair clips are very cute and come in many different styles. The pictures on the website really don’t do the clips justice. They come in an antique brass finish, antique gold, black nickel, and silver tone. I love the silver tone, and the black nickel and antique gold are pretty as well.

Since I have fine-medium hair, I use the mini size to hold my bangs back, or to hold one side of my hair back.

The extra small can be used to do a half pony tail on me.

And I can also use the small for a half pony tail.

The small can be used to do a full pony tail.

The medium can be used to do a peacock twist, which is my favorite updo of all time.

There’s no way I have enough hair to use the large or extra large. Those sizes are meant for thicker hair.

The thing I really like about the flexi-8s are that you can put one in your hair in the morning and not have to adjust it all day. It holds your hair in place with the tension through the 8, without giving you a tension headache. Most of my favorite hair accessories I can only wear for a limited time each day because of the tension they give me across my head, or I’ll have to keep adjusting them because of how my hair is so finely textured.

I’ve done different things to test how well they stay in. The mini and extra small stay in all day with no problems in my bangs or holding part of my hair back. I used the medium on a day when I was working out to hold my hair up off of my neck, and it didn’t budge, even with all the whipping around I was doing with my head. The small worked beatifully out in the sun all day walking around and kept my hair from looking like a hot mess.

The only thing I don’t love about these are the price, as I feel that they are a bit high for the smaller sizes. However, since they seem so well-made they’re still not a bad deal. I know I want to pick up the cute little skull and crossbones in the mini design. I do hope that they add a few more colors, or maybe a ‘create your own’ option, where you can pick a design you like, such as the scroll work heart or the mighty celtic knot, and add your favorite color of beads to it.

I definitely recommend the flexi-8 hair clips as they’ll stay in place for you all day and look cute in the process.

You can purchase them at Flexi-8.

Please note: I was sent these flexi-8 hair clips for free to review by the company.
