Overall, I like the formula on these, though since I chose mattes and satins, they’re all on the dry side. If you are prone to dry lips like I am, you will need to moisturize your lips before application.

About the Zenmed B5 Hyaluronic Plumping Serum
Vitamin B5 and Hyaluronic Acid help bump up collagen levels by drawing moisture towards the surface of the skin. Plumping skin cells leads to a visible improvement of mature, sun-damaged, and dehydrated skin. Contours appear more enhanced, wrinkles are minimized, and the skin looks visibly thicker and more youthful.

About the Omegaceramide+ Recovery Moisturizer
Extreme hydration helps support the natural collagen matrix of the skin resulting in a reduction of enlarged pores, fine lines, and the visibility of broken blood vessels. Neutral base helps skin undergoing laser treatments or utilizing our Reconstructive Skincare serums recover with minimal downtime. Helps counter age-related and troubled skin’s natural moisture loss and restore vitality to the skin.

Key Ingredients

  • Vitamin B5- Naturally anti-inflammatory, hydrating, calms & eases sensitive skin
  • Hyaluronic Acid – Holds 1,000 times its weight in water to increase hydration and help skin seal in moisture. Helps plump the skin.
  • Seaweed Extract – Boosts regeneration, softens, and reduces skin sensitivity
  • Omega 3 Fatty Acids – Calms inflammation and eases the discomfort of irritated skin, while providing a suppleness.

My Experience with the B5 Hyaluronic Plumping Serum
I used the B5 Hyaluronic Plumping Serum 2xs a day (morning and night) before I put on any other skincare product, but after I had cleansed my skin. On the bottle it says “24 hour visible skin tightening and plumping effect. Hydrates and heals.”

This serum was soothing on my skin. It was almost like water, a very thin, runny consistency and it absorbed quickly into my skin. I used it all over my face and eyes and throat. I feel like it did a good job of helping to hydrate my skin, but you cannot wear this product on its own. You must put a moisturizer on top. Sometimes, it didn’t play nice with other products that I had on my skin. For whatever reason, this serum did not work well with my skin and my Mirvaso prescription. I think together it caused a film to form on my skin, perhaps because of how the Mirvaso treats the skin. However it worked fine at night with my night time moisturizer.

I love the packaging for this. I feel like it’s easy to control the amount of product you get with the eye dropper.

My Experience with the Omegaceramide+ Recovery Moisturizer
I used the Omegaceramide+ Recovery Moisturizer at night, and sometimes during the day if I wanted extra moisture on top of my moisturizer with SPF. This product is incredibly soothing on my skin. I loved how it felt. I could apply it on my eyes as well. I love that it absorbs into the skin and doesn’t leave a sticky residue behind.

I hate hate hate the jar packaging. Seriously hate it.

However, I feel like this moisturizer worked amazingly well for me. I feel like it definitely helped my skin to be more moisturized, soothed it after my IPL treatments (which I’m still doing IPL for my rosacea) and most importantly I feel like it has helped to rebuild some of the collagen lost in my skin.

After having used my prescription for Metrogel Cream for over a year, I felt like my skin was getting extremely thin and the collagen was depleted. I stopped using the Metrogel Cream and instead started relying on my prescription for Oracea to help control my rosacea flare ups. In addition to that, I’ve increased the amount of salmon, tuna, and walnuts that I eat since those contain omega 3, which is supposed to help with collagen. I also eat more tomatoes and beets, which contain lycopene. And of course, lots of spinach.

I do feel that for my skin, both of these products together worked extremely well. I feel like my skin is looking better now than it has in a long time. I’ve had less flare ups – though I think that is attributed to a combination of avoiding triggers, not changing skincare products frequently, using these products, my Oracea pills and my IPL treatments. I think my skin is better hydrated and thicker, less fragile and likely to tear.

While I do recommend both products, I do feel like the Omegaceramide+ Recovery Moisturizer is my favorite between the two. I’ve tried it with another serum and it works incredibly well for me.

As I mentioned before, I hate the packaging for Omegaceramide+ Recovery Moisturizer but I do love the results. I would be happier if they changed the packaging to an airless pump.

Finally, I want to talk about the price. Buying the duo, of course, is a great deal. But the Omegaceramide+ Recovery Moisturizer on its own is a pretty good deal since you’re paying $45 for 3 oz, and my other favorite night-time non-retinol moisturizer is $29 for 1.7 oz.

If you have sensitive skin or rosacea, I definitely think it’s worth it to check out Zenmed products. Between their Gentle Cleansing Cream (which is pH balanced) which nourishes the skin and this duo, I’m impressed. I feel like they live up to their claims for my skin.

Have you heard of Zenmed? What’s your current favorite night time moisturizer?

My favorites from the collection are Folie a Deux, Nightmare, Wicked, Nefarious and Eternal Night. I think they’re lovely.

Wretched Soul, Valley of the Dead and Tormented are too alike for my taste, all being variations on khaki, but if you love khaki you’ll probably love the subtle differences between the shades. I think it’s a nice alternative to taupe.

I always think that Meow creates excellent golds and Wicked is no exception. I love the unique, murky nature of Folie a Deux and Nightmare.

Saucebox Toffee and Black Roses Look

I have a cute look that I dubbed Saucebox Toffee and Black Roses to share with you today. This was a super quick and simple look. I applied eyeshadow primer and then I applied tape so that I’d have a clean outer edge. After that, I quickly layered eyeshadows. I started with a layer of Snowflake from the eyebrows to the lashline. Then I applied Almond on the lid and crease and lower lid. I lightened the inner lid and inner lower lid with Cream Dream. I deepened the outer corner of the lid and the outer crease with Toffee. I highlighted at the inner corner and under the brows with Fairylite (purchased when MAC was cruelty free). I lined the waterline with NARS Black Valley. Then I added mascara and I was done!

I love the combination of the Cover FX CC Cream + Neapolitan Lane + Oak Bark + Candlelight Glow + the NARS powder. I feel like my skin looks as flawless on camera as it does in person. I didn’t have to retouch the pictures at all.

My lips look all dry in the lip swatch because I’d just swatched several lip products before putting on that lipstick. I did exfoliate before I started the lip swatchapalooza, and of course I moisturized before and in between, but my lips still ended up with some dry patches. Boo.

Yes, I’m in love with this wig. It’s amazing.

For such a simple eye look, I think it’s really flattering with my eye color.

What do you think of the look? Would you wear it?

DIY How to Dye Hair Extensions

Today I’ve got a video to share with you on DIY How to Dye Hair Extensions featuring Irresistible Me hair extensions. Quite some time ago Irresistible Me sent me a set of their hair extensions. I believe they sent me Silky White Blonde #60 (I say Royal in the video, I was mistaken), 18 inches, 140 g weight.

If you like this video please give it a thumbs up and subscribe!

Each set of Irresistible Me hair extensions is made up of 10 pieces: 1 piece of 4 clips (8″), 2 pieces of 3 clips (6″), 5 pieces of 2 clips (4″) and 2 pieces of 1 clip (1.5″). Their prices range from $129 to $300 depending on the length. They offer 14″ to 24″ length. They offer 3 weights – 100g, 140g and 200g.

Glued In Extensions

I dyed these extensions and my friend Lauren glued them in. See more here. (2009)

LOX Extensions

When I had extensions installed at the salon. See more here. (2011)

I’ve had hair extensions in the past, but not a full set of clip ins. I’ve had single weft clip ins, I’ve had extensions applied at the salon with a ring system, and my friend Lauren has glued extensions into my hair before. The ones I had installed in my hair at the salon were the easiest to deal with on a daily basis.

For the process of dyeing these hair extensions, I went about it differently than how I have in the past.

Irresistible Me Royal White Blonde #60 Hair

Freshly washed and dried Royal White Blonde $60

Silky White Blonde is not actually white blonde. It’s more of what I would call a honey blonde. That said, the color was definitely light enough for me to dye it purple without issue. I washed and conditioned the hair using Cocoa Pink Princess Poo and Argan Therapy Crème Conditioner. I let the hair air dry for a day.

Pravana Vivids mixed with Marc Anthony Conditioner

Pravana Vivids mixed with Marc Anthony Conditioner

Then, I mixed Pravana Vivid Violet with a little of Pravana Vivid Magenta and a whole lot of Marc Anthony Coconut Oil and Shea Butter Conditioner to make the hair dye. I went through 2 full bowls of dye to have enough for all the hair.

Applying Pravana Vivids to the Irresistible Me Hair Extensions

Applying dye

Pravana Vivid Violet and Magenta dyed extensions

Pravana Vivid Violet and Magenta dyed extensions

It took me about an hour to apply the hair dye to all 10 wefts of hair.

Extensions Covered in Foil

Extensions Covered in Foil

I covered the hair in aluminum foil and left them for 3 days. This was probably unnecessary, but since I was not using heat to make the dye set into the hair, I wanted the hair to soak up as much of the dye as possible.

DIY How to Dye Hair Extensions

Yes, you too can dye hair!

When I went to rinse the hair, I found out that my patience had paid off. Rinsing the hair clean of dye, there was very little tint to the water. The hair had absorbed the mixture of conditioner and dye. It was perfect! I washed with Cocoa Pink Princess Poo in Naughty Pumpkin and conditioned with Cocoa Pink Argan Therapy Crème in Cinderella’s Carriage.

Then I let the hair air dry.

Since these are human hair, you need to treat them like human hair. This means use sulfate free shampoo and conditioners. This also means use a heat protectant before you style. You also need to use a wide tooth comb or a brush meant for extensions on them and gently comb / brush them from the bottom up so that you don’t pull hair out of the wefts.

DIY How to Dye Hair Extensions

Because I’m currently lacking a curling iron, I didn’t get a chance to style these in curls the way I think most people would. They didn’t really blend well with my hair, since I didn’t flat iron the hell out of everything.

Yes I really need to buy a curling iron. Any recommendations? I hope you found the DIY dye tutorial helpful. How would you style 18″ of hair like this?

Best Alternatives to Black Eyeliner

Happy Top Ten Tuesday! This time we’re bringing you the top ten best alternatives to black eyeliner. I’m guilty of sticking to black eyeliner more than anything. I do this because I have hooded eyes and I’ve been told that the most flattering way for someone with hooded eyes to wear eyeliner is to put black eyeliner on the upper waterline and at the lash line to open up the eyes. I tend to wear my black eyeliner on the upper and lower waterline.

Below are my alternatives to black or brown.

Urban Decay 24/7 Eyeliners

See swatches of the Urban Decay 24/7 Eyeliners. See swatches of NARS Eye Paints. See swatches of Urban Decay Heavy Metal Glitter Eyeliners.

My current top three blacks are NARS Black Valley, Smashbox Deep Black and Urban Decay Perversion.

I had to leave out some of my favorite liners because I think they’re being discontinued. Urban Decay 24/7 Waterproof liquid eyeliner in Siren (metallic teal) and El Dorado (gold).

I’m still looking for the perfect purple gel eyeliner. Maybe Inglot AMC Eyeliner Gel in 83 or 82 will be that perfect purple shade.

What are your favorite alternatives to black and brown?

L'Oreal purchases Carol's Daughter

In a move to expand their ever growing portfolio, L’Oreal purchases Carol’s Daughter. Carol’s Daughter is a brand that does not test on animals. Earlier this Carol’s Daughter filed for bankruptcy.

“Carol’s Daughter possesses an expertise in the multi-cultural consumer segment, a rapidly expanding market that represents an important growth opportunity in the beauty industry,”said Frederic Roze, President and CEO of L’Oreal USA. “This acquisition will enable L’OrealUSA to build a new dedicated multi-cultural beauty division as part of our Consumer Products business, and strengthen the company’s position in this dynamic market.” (Source, ABC27)

L’Oreal owns many brands, including Urban Decay, Nyx Cosmetics, Kiehl’s, Garnie, Giorgio Armani Beauty, Redken, and more. It’s been interesting to see them acquire brands such as Urban Decay and Nyx Cosmetics, because they’ve allowed those brands to stay true to their core beliefs. In Urban Decay’s case, UD stayed cruelty free and is still Leaping Bunny and PETA certified. They’ve also created a lot of innovative products.

It will be interesting to see what’s in store for Carol’s Daughter with L’Oreal.

Phyrra Says Vol. 20 Life & Gym

While I don’t miss living somewhere that winter and snow (ew!) happens, I do miss living within 4 to 8 hours of a drive of my Grandma.

Yes I really do love Halloween enough that I got married on Halloween. My parents thought it was strange. My inlaws thought it was fun. We had a great time.

Phaedra is great on road trips, long or short. She enjoys riding in the car and will wear her seatbelt without complaining. She’s a perfect companion!

I’ve driven from Indianapolis, IN to San Francisco, CA. I’ve also driven from San Francisco, CA to LA, then to Memphis, TN. A few years ago I took a road trip with my friend Crystal from Kansas to Las Vegas, NV to LA, CA.

What’s the longest road trip you’ve ever taken? Where did you go?

BFTE The Shining Halloween Haunted House Collection Review Swatches Video

Killer Topiary
After reading the book, you will NEVER look at hedge animals the same!
A medium green with a delicate shimmer and green and teal glitter mixed into the batch.
My Take
really pretty medium green with teal glitter and violet sparkles

Overlook Hotel
Full of history and not all of it good, the Overlook Hotel is scary and wondrous, all at once.
This shadow’s base is a bruised purple shade with copper and other multi-colored sparkles. There’s just a lot going on with this one!
My Take
This is a really neat shade! It’s got a blackened plum base with copper iridescence and gold, pink and copper sparkles.

Here’s Johnny!
Considered one of the scariest scenes in movie history, this bit wasn’t in the book.
This shadow is a dark, dusty purple with teal sparkles.
My Take
dusty grape purple with pinky purple iridescence

Room 217
The movie used a different room number because the hotel was afraid it would never be rentable again. However, it’s HIGHLY requested! Room 217 is the room number from the book. The room, itself, isn’t so scary, it’s the bathroom in there!
A blushing pinkish purple shimmer with iridescent glitter.
My Take
Iridescent pink, looks like it rubs down to a warm pink

Redrum
One single word that epitomizes the entire story of The Shining. Now a BFTE shadow to epitomize The Shining Halloween collection.
A super shimmery cool, dark pink.
My Take
warm blood red

Tony
In The Shining, the little boy, Danny, had an imaginary playmate named Tony that wasn’t your ‘usual’ friend. Tony is a limited edition shadow that is only available through October. In its true multi-purpose function, you can use Tony mixed with a clear gloss or, create a nail color by mixing it with a clear polish.
This shadow is a vivid pink shimmer with a slight duo-tone of orange shimmer along with orange sparkles.
My Take
pink with orange iridescence

My favorites from this collection are Killer Topiary, Overlook Hotel and Room 217.
