A Winter Morning Beauty Routine

Sponsored by AmLactin. All opinions are my own. Affiliate Links.

Today I wanted to share a winter morning beauty routine with you. In the winter, my skin gets very dry because of the lack of humidity in the air (yes, even Florida is drier in the winter). This winter I’m trying something new.

I start by showering, using a moisturizing body wash. I cleanse my face with Ofra’s Foaming Cleanser with Vitamin C or a moisturizing cleanser if I’m having a bad skin day. After I get out of the shower and pat myself dry, I apply Silk Naturals Vitamin C Peptide serum to my face.

Amlactin Moisturizers

Here’s the new part for me. I next apply AmLactin Cerapeutic Restoring Body Lotion to my body. This way, the lotion helps to lock in the moisture. I use the AmLactin Ultra Hydrating Body Cream on my feet, knees and elbows to make sure the driest skin is hydrated. Appling a body lotion or heavy body cream after you get out of the shower and pat yourself dry will keep your skin from drying out during the day.

I choose to use the Cerapeutic Restoring Body Lotion because it has ceramides in the formula. Ceramides help to retain moisture. Since we lose moisture from our skin as we age, it’s important to use lotion to keep our skin soft, smooth and hydrated. This formula is fragrance-free, so it’s perfect for sensitive skin.

A Winter Morning Beauty Routine

Next I apply Supergoop SPF 37 eye cream, Supergoop SPF 30 lip balm, Supergoop SPF 30 Serum to my face and Ocean Potion SPF 50 sunblock to my neck, hands, arms and anything else that’s likely to be exposed to the sun. The AmLactin Cerapeutic Restoring Body Lotion contains AHA (alpha-hydroxy acid), which can increase sensitivity to the sun, so it’s really important to slather on the sunscreen to protect your skin.

I wait 15 minutes, and then it’s time to put on my makeup!

More tips for keeping your skin happy this winter

  • In the winter, it’s really important to moisturize more frequently.
  • It’s also important to still wear sunscreen, too.
  • Try using lukewarm instead of scalding hot showers, since extreme hot water will strip your skin of its natural oils. Keep your shower time shorter, too.
  • Exfoliate your body with a sugar scrub three times a week.
  • Use a moisturizing face mask once or twice a week, depending on your skin’s needs.
  • If you need to, use a moisturizing facial cleanser.
  • Instead of exfoliating your face with a harsh scrub, try using a Clarisonic Mia or a Foreo Luna.
  • Don’t forget to reapply sunscreen as needed if you’re going to be outside.
  • Drink plenty of water; it’s good for you!
  • Eat walnuts and salmon. Both contain omega 3s, which help to boost hydration.
  • Keep a moisturizing lip balm by you side and apply throughout the day.

Every week, AmLactin is hosting a giveaway on their Facebook page. See their page for more details.

How do you change your morning winter beauty routine to combat dryness? Comment below for a chance to win $1000

People everywhere are talking about AmLactin alpha-hydroxy skin care. And for good reason – it does what it’s supposed to do. No overpromises or puffery. Their formulas with clinically proven alpha-hydroxy acids gently exfoliate and intensely hydrate dry skin to help it return to a healthy, natural state. For long-lasting moisture and serious relief. Get serious care for softer skin.

This is a sponsored conversation written by me on behalf of AmLactin. The opinions and text are all mine.

Halloween Snow Fright Tutorial

On the eve of All Hallows’ Eve I have a Halloween Snow Fright tutorial to share with you. I’ve wanted to do a gothic Snow White all year. While I love my eyeshadow, I’m not fully happy with my lashes or my outfit. I had an allergic reaction to the costume I wore (even though I hand washed it before I wore it. It gave me hives on my neck, chest and torso. No good!

My costume was black with red accents. My wig is black with purple accents, so I used a purple pettiecoat under my costume. You can see these colors echoed in my eyeshadow.

Also, I can’t get Ray to take a good picture of me, though he tries! I really need to get a remote control for my DSLR and try that with a tripod. Though to be fair, I hated all the pictures I took of myself for this look.

I did take one picture without the wig. You can see that despite being in a wig cap, my hair is still slightly wavy from the deep waver I used. It has a lot more volume than I normally have.

Easy Demoness Look

I was feeling a little better today after hitting the gym so I put together an easy Demoness look. The key to this look is really having the cute little clip-in horns. I got them at some Party store a few years ago and I’ve worn them countless times on and off over the past 5 years.

Easy Demoness Look featuring Sugarpill and Inglot

To recreate my eye look here are the steps to take
1. Apply Obsessive Compulsive Cosmetics Skin Primer as eye primer.
2. Use e.l.f. Studio Makeup Mist & Set on a brush to apply Sugarpill Stella to the lid.
3. Use a soft dome brush to apply Inglot 81 pigment to the crease.
4. Highlight under the brows with MAC Fairy Lite (discontinued, purchased when MAC was cruelty free, sub an iridescent pink or orange)
5. Line the upper waterline with NARS Eye Paint in Black Valley.
6. Add Ardell Spiky Lashes.
7. Choose a black, red, or orange lip product for Hellfire lips.

I chose Inglot 81 because it changes between orange, copper, and cranberry red, making it perfect for a fiery effect. I chose Sugarpill Stella because it’s a black filled with rainbows.

You can get clip-in horns like mine from Amazon.

Seriously Sassy is a royal purple jelly, with blue to purple colour shifting glitter.

Selfie Bomb is a sparkly gold holo micro glitter shimmer combination accented with pink and lavender microglitter.

These photos in no way do these two colors justice. However, it’s tough to beat a purple and gold combo. They’re both beautiful! I really love how the gold has a hint of pink to it. Seriously Sassy is a stunner too! I love the blue tones in the purple.

I’m sorry I haven’t really done looks for Halloween so far this year. I have 1 planned, but I’ve been really down with all the stuff with my grandma. It’s hard for me to get in the spirit.

I tried a new indie brand, Beauty Bar Baby. I was disappointed with their metallic purple gel eyeliner. I thought it would be a deeper shade but it was actually much lighter. The texture was nice and the product did ship fast.

I also tried another new brand, Cate McNabb. I really liked the Naked Peach blush.

Of course Makeup Geek Pixie Dust  is awesome! It really makes me think of potions that a witch would brew up… all green and bubbly.

Now on to the Colour Pop. You already know I love the Colour Pop lip pencils and Lippie Stix if you caught my video swatchathon. The new green shade Bunny is awesome. I can’t believe how good it looks when worn! I really feel like the lips steal the show.

So… about the hair. Now that I realized my hair is long enough to curl and I didn’t own a curling iron, I ended up buying the Bed Head Deep Waver from Amazon. I used a heat protectant all over and then worked through all the layers of my hair. I only burned myself twice, which wasn’t bad since I had never used a device like this before. I’m impressed with how well this waves my stick straight hair. I woke up with my hair still wavy. Usually curls don’t stick in my hair, and certainly not overnight! I think I’m in love with having my hair wavy.

What do you think of my Halloween Witch’s Brew Tutorial? Would you wear Bunny on your lips? Do you like the wavy hair?

My Favorite Perfumes

Happy Makeup Wars Monday! For this Makeup Wars we’re sharing our favorite perfumes. I used to buy just one bottle of perfume and wear that daily until I finished it. I have my scents denoted below as daytime and nighttime so that you know when I prefer to wear them. However, I do believe you can wear whatever fragrance you want whenever it strikes your mood, so think of those notes as suggestions.

Before I started blogging, I’d moved to having around 3 perfumes that I rotated – Alfred Sung Shi, Hugo Boss Deep Red and Kenneth Cole Black. I don’t believe any of these are cruelty free.

Shi – Water Lily, Fig Leaves, Orange, Frangipani (daytime)
Black – a delicate aroma of lush florals, citrus, sandalwood and musk, a warm fragrance.(nighttime)
Deep Red – Top notes Clementine, Blood Orange and Blackcurrant, Heart notes Freesia, Pittosporum and Ginger Flower, and Base notes Sandalwood, Cedarwood and Vanilla. This one always made me feel sexy. (nighttime)

For help finding cruelty free perfumes, please check out my Beginner’s Guide to Cruelty Free Perfumes.

Tru Fragrances Sinful, TokyoMilk Dark Tainted Love and Lavanilla Vanilla Summer

Since I now buy only cruelty free perfumes, I usually stick to independent companies that you can’t find in department stores.

Tru Fragrances Sinful, TokyoMilk Dark Tainted Love and Lavanilla Vanilla Summer

My favorite department store perfumes are TokyoMilk Dark Tainted Love and Tru Fragrance Sinful. I also enjoy some of the LAVANILA scents, like Vanilla Summer.

Tainted Love – Dark Vanilla Bean, Orchid, White Tea, Sandalwood. (nighttime)
Sinful – top notes of mandarin, grapefruit and raspberry, mid notes of rose, gardenia and sparkling mimosa, base notes of sandalwood, patchouli and tonka bean (nighttime)
Vanilla Summer – Tropical mango, juicy pineapple, creamy coconut milk, and island sugar cane are steeped in base of warm Madagascar vanilla for the ultimate summer scent. (daytime)

There are a lot of great indie perfume companies out there, but my favorites are BPAL, Cocoa Pink and Fortune Cookie Soap Co.

Cocoa Pink Perfumes

My favorite scents from Cocoa Pink are almost all pumpkin themed. Bonfire Pumpkins is a smoky scent that I didn’t expect to love, but I do. I don’t normally like smoky scents. Cinderella’s Carriage is a perfect sexy foodie type scent. Harlequin mask is a soft shea and vanilla scent, another scent I wasn’t sure if I’d love but I do.

Cinderella’s Carriage – What did Cinderella really wish for? We think it was this blend of Coconut Cream Pie with Marshmallow Meringue, Sweet Pumpkin, Spiritueuse Double Vanilla, and Vanilla Bean Noel. (nighttime)
Black Chocolate Raspberries ~ Fresh, juicy raspberries coated in a layer of rich dark chocolate with a hint of seduction. (nighttime)
Harlequin Mask – Smooth shea gently sweetened with tinges of warm vanilla, yellow pear smothered within gobs of golden honeycomb (daytime)
Halloween Night – Honeycrisp apples coated in buttery melted caramel, bourbon vanilla, crumbles of muscavado sugar, white sugar and candy corn. (daytime)
Pumpkin Cake on Mondays – pumpkin and delicious sponge cake made with almond extract, vanilla, and a hint of cinnamon, then slathered in cream cheese buttercream frosting. (nighttime)
Bonfire Pumpkins – This scent started out as an accident then turned into my personal all time favorite scent. This year I decided to share. We accidentally mixed Pumpkin porridge with Marshmallow Fireside and created a sensational creamy bonfire scent with notes of maple oats drizzled with pure golden clover honey, a pinch of muscovado sugar all topped with a dollop of sugared pumpkin puree plus toasted vanilla marshmallows over a roaring fire. This is a smoky scent. (nighttime)
Witches Delight – Brimming with the true olfactory essence of the fall season! Soft buttery vanilla cookies dusted with orange and black sugar, fresh cranberries, blood orange oil, dark brown sugar, Turkish mocha whipped with shards of bitter almond, roasted hazelnuts tempered with a cool blast of iced vanilla. (nighttime)

Black Phoenix Alchemy Lab Suck It and Vice Perfumes

With BPAL, it can be overwhelming to figure out where to begin and they have so many complex scents. The two I reach for over and over again are Vice and Suck It. I also love Lady Death Savage.

Vice – Black cherry, dark chocolate and hints of orange (anytime)
Suck It – Sexy and suckable: black cherry brandy and a whisper of red wine. (nighttime)

Fortune Cookie Soap Lollipop Your Cherry, BFFs, Wicked, Good Perfumes

Fortune Cookie Soap Co has a mix of great scents. I have 3 and I’m lusting after a fourth, Unicorn Farts.

BFFs – Blueberries and pumpkins might be considered an unexpected friendship, but in this unique scent, they’re inseparable! Sticky sugared blueberries and luscious baked pumpkin with all the fall spices atop a warm cake accord.(daytime)
Wicked, Good – Because orange would have been too obvious! Sweet pumpkin pie filling with the perfect touch of cinnamon, ginger and brown sugar, finished with a generous dollop of fresh whipped cream. (nighttime)
Lollipop Your Cherry – Cherries, cherries and more cherries swirled with vanilla, and a hint of orange and pineapple. (daytime)

What do you like to wear during the day? Do you change it up at night?

Phyrra's Eyeshadow Hoard

Some people are goo hoarders. I have an eyeshadow hoard. Today I’ve got a special video that shares my eyeshadow obsession with you. As an added bonus I did a quick tour  around my makeup room, too, since you’ve been asking for that. Please excuse my skin. The day I filmed this I had my 4th IPL treatment and wasn’t comfortable putting makeup on. Instead I had a bunch of soothing creams on my face.

I decided on the term hoard, like a dragon’s hoard, instead of collection. Since, ya know, they are my pretties. Please remember, this is not a normal sized eyeshadow collection. Before I started blogging my MAC collection (which you see in the video) would have taken up only 1 drawer in my sherrieblossom icebox skinny. That’s more of a normal sized collection vs. what you’ll see in my eyeshadows. All MAC and MUFE purchased when the brands were cruelty free.

This drawer has

My Light box with all my beauty books

Above is my light box with all of my beauty / makeup books. I have 3 storage cubes filled with various things I need to review. And of course, a sleeping Phaedra on the floor.

My Storage

This is most of my storage. The 2 Alex on the left contain my nail polish and wigs. The 2 black storage towers are semi-full and the pink one is empty. The Helmer is currently empty.

My Tokidoki Unicorns and Funko characters

These are my tokidoki unicornos, funko pop characters, and other various Cheshire cats and skulls.

My Desk

My desk with the 5 Jack Skellington masks hanging out behind it. You can see both my sherrieblossom icebox and ediva princess on top of my short Alex. I’ve got a Purple Snowball mic on my desk, a webcam, 3 umbrella stand lights and my ring light. I’ve got another flexible neck light on the window sill. You can see both my q-tips and tissues on top of the icebox. (See my blogging equipment here)
